  • to Dennis Colby re: Heartbreak Kid

To Dennis Colby - You are absolutely correct; Grodin's character is narcissistic as can be (not unlike the Democratic Party), but "happiness" is not either his goal, the movie's goal, or for that matter, the goal of the "Party." A "happy ending" is at once a subjective uncertainty and solely resides in the mind and eye of the beholder, or should I say "the voter." It seems that every time emotionalism gets too much in the way of pragmatism, the result is not good.

  • Hillary supporters, if you think she can win

I have a proposition for you. Go to intrade.com and put a bet on Hillary to win the nomination. Right now she has less than a 20% chance according to the market.

If you put down $460, and she wins, your winnings will be $2300, the maximum contribution allowed to a presidential candidate. So, after she wins the nomination, you can donate the max to her campaign to beat McCain.

Oh, you weren't that serious about it?

    Oh, oh, I thought so.

  • What worries me about Obama

It all boils down to this: Clinton and McCain are giving the media the simplified stories they want (Clinton is the Comeback Kid, MCCain is the Maverick War Hero) while Obama is talking issues and taking the high road in his campaign. Result: the media is boosting Clinton/McCain, while Obama has to do his own boosting.

I don't know why, but Democratic nominees and their staffs seem incapable of manipulating the media to define who they are. And people like us who post on salon.com and other liberal sites blame the media for spending their time on stories that make no sense. Get a grip, people -- that's what the media does. Individually they are not stupid, but collectively they are as brain dead as a group of lemmings. If a story grabs one of them, it will grab them all. The stories don't have to be true (McCain is not a maverick, he's an opportunist who sticks his finger in the air before he makes a pronouncement, but you'll never see the MM portray him that way). They just have to be simple and touch an emotional chord with the American public.

Rather than ranting against coverage of this campaign, I wish we'd start asking questions of the Obama camp. Why can't you use the media better? You're all smart folks (I presume) making good money and you should know something about the political climate you work in. When are we going to see some evidence of that?

  • Democracy, not divine intervention

"Anoint the Lord Obama Ra Emperor of the World, for life, forego all elections and await his messianic age."

In addition to being condescending and slightly delusional (I'm thinking of you ProudTexas Girl), Hillary supporters either can't or don't want to grasp the fact that Obama's lead in both the delegate count and the popular vote is the result of a thoroughly democratic process -- nobody is "annointing" Obama -- it's just that more people like him and have chosen to VOTE for him over Hillary. It might be upsetting to be on the losing end of this process, but that is the way our system works. Referring to Obama as some kind of "messianic" figure or demeaning those who support him as "starry-eyed," "naive" or "Obamaniacs" is as misguided as it is counterproductive.

  • To ittle lord baltimore and all who'd drag us down if they're person doesn't win

I'm a Obama supporter and people like you disgust me.

This also goes for Clinton supporters who'd scuttle the party if they don't get their way.

I'd want a political system where I wasn't dealing with the lesser of two evils, but as long as I'm stuck in this one I want to avoid the greater evil.

You'd support a 100 year war in Iraq, abortion bans and a hands off approach to economic collapse out of petulance. Your politics are motivated by deep personal loathing and an idea of perfection which Obama himself has not promised.

I find Obama well to the right of my own ideals, but I supported him because he's exhibits a great deal of sense. As does Clinton, despite all her centrist cronyism and negative campaigning.

Honestly, get past the temper tantrum and realize this nation is in crisis mode.

  • I should learn to spell

That's "their person" not "they're person". There goes any high ground I had left.

  • Cynthia McKinney and The Green Party.....

are looking better and better with every passing day.

Clinton is rabidly ambitious to the point of being reminiscent of Julius Caesar.

Obama has Zbigniew Brezinski holding his hand leading him toward even more global dominance than we're seeing now.

And McCain is ready for his morning dose of Aricept while Henry Kissinger leads him down the same David Rockefeller path that Obama's on.

    No thank you.

I'd rather vote for a "normal" person who loves and respects the Constitution and who actually wants to try to make our world a better place in which ALL the people of Earth can live. We need to take an evolutionary leap in consciousness or there will be no Earth left for future generations!

Cynthia McKinney isn't afraid to speak the truth about 9/11 and for that reason alone I will change my registration if I must and vote for her in November. At least my conscience will be clear.

  • GOT IT WRONG - AGAIN

The argument that the Democratic Party cannot have a "real" convention unless it's nominee is already determine is hogwash! Why not let the convention actually do what it's supposed to do - nominate a nominee?

McCain's scripted-by-the-book affair will be boring compared to what is going on at Democratic Central in Denver. I predict one big snooze for McCain's event as most prospective voters already have him defined as George W. McCain by then anyway. And how much more "war, war, and more war" symbolism do you think the American people care to salute?

The Democratic Party might be one big free-for-all as so-called pledged delegates break ranks, try to leverage their votes with their local party hacks, and otherwise create a real democratic mess the likes of which we have not seen for a long, long time. But who would NOT want to turn in to see what happens next?
