@ Donut44
Wow, that was a lot of words to say absolutely nothing. Except for a few choice ad hominems about liberals and some fancy straw man talking points (you've got yours down, and a nice case of projection). Try bringing some facts along with your opinions. Makes a much better argument...

Lies, lies and more lies about iraq
We are presiding over a complete disintegration of Iraqi society - anyone who says anything else is lying to you. The OxFam report in 2007 showed 43% of Iraqis living in "absolute poverty." Not relative poverty, as in the first world, which is based on relative iniquity as compared another sector of the population. Absolute poverty means the lack of one or more essential elements, such as shelter, food, water or sanitation. There are an estimated 3 million Iraqis with injuries. Most of these people get no treatment due to the still completely eviscerated Iraqi health infrastructure. There are 4-5 million internal and external refugees. The Lancet and ORB studies point to more than 1 million excess civilian deaths due to the occupation. All of this in a country with just 24 million people to start with.
Petreus is a liar. He is in his position precisely because he passes the administration's ideological litmus test for unquestioning support - like every other person left in the military, the CIA, or the whole government for that matter. Anyone who gave a shit about the truth has retired or been given the boot, and many (most?) have roundly criticized their former Decider in Chief. Only ideologues who are willing to whore for Bush remain.

The Surge is working
Now they claim the surge is working. But until he announced the big swelling manly surge, the official line from the Bush White House was that the previous policy was working too. The surge is working. The surge has always been working. The surge will forever be in a state of working. But note, they still haven't defined the terms by which we can say that the surge has worked. But that last is the key to any rational discussion, I think.
The rhetoric pre-surge is almost verbatim what Petraeus delivered yesterday: Slow but steady progress, we can't quit now, just when we're at yet another defining moment. The price of defeat is too great, and blah blah blah. The language never changes! Four years later, McCain is delivering George Bush's same tired stump speech.
I propose we start taking back the rhetoric. It's not a war, it's an occupation. It's not a surge, it's a stall. The stall is working! It's helping, as intended, to keep making sure that Bush's failed policies to be the engine that drives the country. It's stupid and wrong.
The language is exactly the same! Nothing has changed. Oh, wait a minute, there is one thing that has changed. At least another thousand US soldiers have given their lives in service to George Bush's stall. That's 1,000; or as Dick Cheney might call it, just a number. But many Americans needn't worry about that. They put a bumper sticker on their car, so they've done their part.

Bogus study
"The Lancet and ORB studies point to more than 1 million excess civilian deaths due to the occupation..."
Nealry half of The Lancet's study was funded by George Soros. In other words, the study is bogus. No credible study shows anywhere near the 1 million figure. CNN, a Clinton Inc, outfit, has been reporting 90,000.

The surge was meant to keep us in Iraq, not get us out
This may be the best article I have ever read in Salon.
Mr. Benjamin points out that the real reasons for the deline in violence are the fact the Some Sunnis have joined the fight against Al Queda in Iraq in exhange for armr, jobs and recongition by the Petraeus regime they are people. And two othher facts, Al Sadr's ceasefire by his militia (whichwas responsible for a lot of the violence), and the fact that the Shites have run out or killed so many Sunnis in Baghad that the city which once was 60% Sunni is now about 45% Sunni (accomplished under Bremer's rule of Iraq--which he dismissed as "payback"--and the US backed government since). This did not occur because of more US troops.
One thing no one is admitting is thia: the Surge was not about getting the Iraqi Government up and running so we could leave Iraqi. That was the public justifiction the White House gave.
THE REAL REASON FOR THE SURGE WAS TO GET THE LEVEL OF VIOLENCE DOWN AND SATISFY THE AMERICAN PEOPLE ENOUGH SO THEY WILL QUIT DEMANDING WE LEAVE IRAQ.
THE PLAN, AS MCCAIN, DLINTON, AND OBAMA KNOW, IS FOR US TO STAY IN IRAQ, NOT LEAVE.

Sizing up Petraeus on Iraq
I believe Petraeus is telling the truth about Iraq but unfortunately he is having tunnel vision spasms! 71%of the Iraqi women want the US & Coalition troops out of Iraq. The agreement between US Govt & Iraq for the US to remain in Iraq as long as necessary has yet to be challenged by the Iraqi public. By the time this occupation is overwith, it will place Iraq in a worse predictament then under Saddam. At least they have food, electricity, water, gas and plenty of security to protect the people which isn't happening today! Though the government may not like it, Iraq's politicians and Iran are much closer relationship than the US.The killings of Iraqi people are down and it doesn't need the brain of a rocket scientist to know the reason since over 2 million people have left the country and the other 2 million or so are refugees within their own country and have been driven from their own homes.
