  • We can learn from the past.

We can learn from the success of the past. If the first President Clinton was able to turn things around I have no doubt that Senator Clinton can do the same. The world does act as a pendulum. We went from the hippy era of the sixties to the extreme conservatism of the 80's. It wouldn't be such a bad idea to revisit what worked economically in the 90's, then we tweak it and we can straighten this mess out. Clinton is the person to do it.

I don't think either Sen. Obama or Sen. McCain are as smart when it comes to policy and issues. I really think Senator Clinton knows a heck of a lot more than they do when it comes to making things work. She's brilliant on interviews or in debates. They can't throw a question at her regarding policy or issues that she doesn't comprehend and understand fully. She also has worked well with some of the republicans in the Senate, both in NYC and the U.S. Senate. She doesn't talk a good story about change, she knows how to achieve it. She also knows you can't do it alone, you have to get Congress on board and I believe Congress really does want to work together and straighten this mess out and they need to do it with a person of experience. She's tough! No other candidate has been bashed so unfairly in the Press and yet she's still right there in the race, because a lot of people believe in her.

You don't have to like her, I happen to, but you can respect her abilities and think about what this country really needs. Plus it doesn't hurt having a spouse who knows the drill also. I think Clinton can not only help out our woes but also lift up the world view of America. I don't blindly listen to the Press when they try and create some Savior like figure and I also don't take everything they say negatively about McCain as the truth. The Media has never before been so biased for one candidate. This isn't entertainment folk, this is our future and Sen. Clinton is my candidate.

  • Pastorgate?

Is that filed before or after Plagarismgate? Are they filed chronologically or alphabetically in the Dustbin of Faux Outrage History? I tend not to peer in the trash that often so I apologize for not knowing offhand.

  • It's not about nostagia. It's that

the Clintons for many years have formulated policy by evaluating facts and political conditions, not by pandering to less educated sectors or taking orders from ideologues. They're the greatest policy experts of our time. Most of their work is taken for granted even today, and there's no comparison between Obama and Hillary. Obama's only credible policies were adopted from the Clintons: healthcare reform, fiscal responsibility, and bipartisanship. Ther rest are either far left cliches, like dictator parties, also known as the darling baby lambkins theory of foriegn policy; or absurd fanatsies like uniting the country, while he brings republican smear tactics into the party and his supporters throw mud like the Mississippi Delta on meth.

  • @ Sarah Brice

You have obviously never been really poor or you would know two things:

    1. $50,000 a years is a livable income for a family of four.

    2. Fall under $40,000 and the children will be covered under S-CHIP. That frees up money to cover the parents.

    3. Hillary has said that under her plan, no one should have to pay more than 10% of their income for insurance.

    4. Previously, Senator Clinton wanted to raise the S-CHIP limit to $60,000. Therefore, it is likely that should she attain the presidency, she will push this or some other plan to cover such families.

  • @ Sarah Brice

Posted without editing. Obviously, I mean the first two things on my list. Three and four are just gravy.

It always amazes me that people think that they are terribly poor on $50,000 dollars a year.

You're right. Obama had nothing to do with the passing of the Patriot act. Somebody needs to get their shit straight.

  • Hillary's bridge and salon.com posters

The people who continually post on Salon.com and other blogs seems to enjoy attacking other people. It is their belief that their opinion is the only one that may be valid, and those who dare to disagree with them must be either stupid, or racist.

It would be an interesting experiment to take 10 supporters of each candidate put them in a room with a moderator and have them have a non negative discussion based on facts instead of interpretations of facts.

No one may use profanity or attack language, but interact with each other with civility and temperence.

  • BFD Smith

So, in Smithworld 50,000 a year is a good income for a family of four. Four what, cats? If you live in western Kansas, inherited your house so you have no house payments, never take a vacation, and all you kids get full college scholarships, you're right. In the SF bay area, 50k a year gets you a shitty rental duplex, both parents have to work their assess off, and they will never, ever own a home. Ever. I presume here we are talking gross income, the usual standard for determining what "income" is. the middle class has been losing ground for thirty years. The days of single income families with a stay at home parent are gone. Done. finished. Kaput. Down the crapper. Over. Get a clue. Please?

  • Sceptical Geek

Next time check the veracity of the facts of which you so wantonly speak.

  • tom payne: Smithville

Smith lives in Texas, a very different place than the Bay Area. Up here, in the NorthEast, housing is also expensive and you'd have heating costs to contend with as well. I'd have to ask an expert how much A/C you can get in the summer in TX on 50k/year.

Bottom line, if you want to see real low standards of living, leave the US. Nepal or India could be a good place to start.

  • fester, Sir

Uncle Sam gave me free haircuts and trips around the pacific from '68 to '72, so I saw squalor. when we first got married (August '70) I was making 180 a month and rent (north shore Oahu) was 200. We ate rice at least two meals a deal. Just rice. But we knew we had an upside, and the poverty of at least 90 percent of the planet is beyond my comprehension. I will refrain from any Texas jibes regarding how far 50K goes. Good people live there too. Some must. The law of averages and all.
