Lucy In the Sky with Diamonds
My God that's the scariest article I've read yet about the impending disaster. It is a landmark of a piece.
McCain is the maverick alright. As dangerous a man as this nation has seen. Maybe, if it talks, walks, and farts like a duck--it's a duck!
I can hear the refrain now: "Having found the source of the war in Iraq is the nation of Iran, the United States is now at war with Iran."
Here's a news conference question: Mr. McCain: if it becomes necessary for the United States to become militarily involved with Iran, would you consider re-instituting the draft?
Why not get aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaallllllllllllllllllllllll the way back to Nam? Who cares how many Presidents it takes--as long as they know war is the answer.
And yet there are those who are on the fence as to the viability of voting Democratic regardless of the candidate.
After all, there is no difference between the parties...
The uncompromising are as much a part of the problem as the fundies, the neo-cons, the traditional Republicans who refuse to see what has happened to their party, and those who are still living with Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds.

When One's Defining Moment Lies Behind
John McCain does, indeed, as Bruce Hoffman says, misapply the lessons of history to support his (McCain's) world view. This is a major problem with looking backward while attempting to move forward. The simple truth is there is no "Victory with honor" to be had in Iraq because it was dishonorable war from the start and cannot be polished up with a victory -- even a "clean" victory. If McCain were to apply his own logic from the Lebanon debacle to Iraq he'd be calling for a wrap-up of this seemingly endless fiasco, but the more it comes to resemble Vietnam, the more he is likely to apply faulty logic to this equally pointless war.
For Senator McCain to say "There's only one thing worse than an overstressed Army and Marine Corps, and that's a defeated Army and Marine Corps" is to pronounce a world-class non sequitur; there is no way to avoid defeat without overstressing our ground forces. To borrow from Bob Dylan, "There's no success like failure, and failure's no success at all." It is circular logic born, no doubt, of Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome buried so deeply in John McCain's own psyche that it makes him the most unreliable, if highly honorable, judge of what would best serve the United States of America, Iraq and, ultimately, much of the world.
For this reason alone, John McCain disqualifies himself as a competent Commander-in-chief. His tremendous military education has been trumped by his world view having been locked 180 degrees in reverse for some forty years. We cannot afford to hire a driver who's gaze is fixed on the rear-view mirror.

Reagan collapsed like a cardbox box in Lebanon
McCain might have been right about Lebanon but Hezbollah still talks about the asswipping they handed the US in Lebanon. It was one of the high points of their mythology. First they kill 241 Americans then Reagan tucks his tail between his legs and splits.

On Party Loyalty
Great article. Interesting how McCain's position on Somalia changed with the Party occupying the presidency.
"things had changed since the previous December: A Republican president had been replaced by a Democrat.." I firmly believe the end of the Iraq debacle will be turning the Whie House over to a Democrat, which will cause the Republicans to lose interest in the war overnight. Just a prediction. Oh, and they'll blame everyone else including the troops for the "defeat".

Anyone else get the feeling...
that President McCain's first order of business will be pulling out of Iraq in order to redeploy to Vietnam so we can get that monkey off our back once and for all?

MC CAIN LOVES WAR
Mc, Cain hates war??? He said he will be in Iraq, 100 YEARS , how much more time would he be there if he did like war? Republicans don't like wars, were no richness on those countries are involve (Oil, Mines, Diamonds ,ETc) if a region is poor and miserable and there is dead and desolation, they don't care about it, at all!! AND THEY PROCLAIM THEY ARE THE PARADIGM OF CHRISTIANITY!!! ( THE CONSIDER THEMSELVES THE BEST CHRISTIANS IN THIS WORLD)

" He set about learning the lessons of the conflict in Southeast Asia soon after he got back to the United States."
John McCain knows less about the Vietnam War than most of us Americans who lived through it, not just the people who went there and fought, but also those of us who lived through it here at home.
For crying out loud, McCain was in prison in North Vietnam. He never saw how that war ripped the USA apart, back in the USA. And, he never saw the futile jungle-rot futility of our ground war against the Vietcong and the North Vietnamese. He was in prison., not sinking and taking fire in the swamps of Vietnam.
McCain had a great chance to be a good commander, and pull his guys, our guys, out of the irrelevant Iraq meatgrinder. He could have come out against Iraq, and EVERYBODY would have voted for him.
But he did not, because he does not have much real Vietnam wisdom, does not have a realistic idea about being a good commander, actually does not care about American troops, apparently.
McCain is nuts in a murderous way. Ten years ago, he might have been okay, maybe rational, but now he is evil. A good commander would save our Americans from their shameful mission in Iraq, would save their precious lives for a good cause. That is not John McCain.
-
Because
McCain supports the Iraq war because he saw first hand what happened in Viet Nam when we quit. He knows better than to quit again. He knows what evil is. He's not afraid to fight it.

Explaining McCain
I've said it before, but in case you missed it:
John McCain wasn't the anchor man of his class but he came close. Who do you want as your leader? The smartest guy (Barack O) or gal (Hillary RC) in his/her class or the dumbest (John McC)?
-
Presidential material?
Here are some very reasonable questions itemized in the article that should be answered before we go into any war:
" Is there a vital national security interest at stake?
Is there a clear and attainable goal?
Have nonviolent efforts been exhausted?
Is there a viable exit strategy?
Do the American people support the action?
Is there broad international support? "
Can you even remotely suggest that Sen. McCain thoughtfully addressed these questions before we invaded Iraq? Heavens no.
Would he consider these questions if we were confronted with a decision to invade another "evil" country? Who knows. This gentleman's actions range from marginally reasonable to confused and counter productive. He is one unpredictable statesman. Thank god he's not running for president or we could be in real trouble....Oops! Really?
