Barack Obama, working-class hero?

On a bus tour through Pennsylvania, Obama tries to impress blue-collar white voters. He'll need them to keep the state close in April -- or to win it in November.

The letters thread is now closed.

@weeping

i wake up to find you effectively shut up tom payne. you have no business corralling other posters. you tried to do that with me but i wasn't biting. it has to do with your leftist anti-tribal ideology. so, instead, you defend katetex who basically, racistly, blames the victim. you won't consider blacks the victim because that would be identifying with the tribe. clearbluesea says in her first post about how PA could very well go to Obama. then she takes it back by admitting it's all part of a familial psycho-drama. she says "I have exclusively dated black men for the last ten years" EXCLUSIVELY? then she says there's no "black culture", so what gives? she likes the shade? the importance of being Ernest? NO, like weeping it's another leftist ideology - it's a political marriage, UGH! it also lessens the import of her testimony - but since it's only intended to show how PURE she is of Bigotry, it's not really any testimony at all.
Tom Payne's family has more votes than you, weeping. you shut up an important person and curtseyed to a racist McCainer.

@ClearBlueSea

"The typical white person is racist, even if its just a little bit so."

Let's be honest here -- the typical _person_ is racist. Non-whites are _also_ racist. Prejudice and bigotry are part of human nature. And Blacks are human, too.

(egads, I actually hesitated before using the word "Blacks". This is where all this PC nonsense has brought us to? So sad...)

Hey, I keep my bigotry down to bankers.

And evangelicals.

And people with differing opinions to me.

And people who agree with me too much.

Obama = International Business = Pennsylvania Jobs

Senator Obama's cooperative and unifying leadership qualities will bring a rapid thaw to the unfriendly stance businesses outside the U.S. have toward our business community. The worldwide disdain for our foreign policy blunders leaks over into America's business dealings. Getting our troops out of Iraq coupled with diplomatic initiatives throughout the world will increase ventures between American and international businesses. This increased trust in our nation will improve the business and job climate to the benefit of our middle class workers (please take note voters of Pennsylvania).

Good Luck with that!

"Obama tries to impress blue-collar white voters. He'll need them to keep the state close in April -- or to win it in November"

Yeah, good luck with that...ESPECIALLY when you have a reverand who you support who says "God D@mn America."

Your chances of keeping them are about as good as a snowball's chances with Satan.

The Top 10 Myths Keeping Hillary in the Race

Here are ten enduring, kudzu-like myths about the state of the Democratic nomination race, with the debunking they sorely need.

KateTex

Anyone who holds Colin Powell out to be some sort of dignified role model is delusional to the point of schizophrenia.

I'm not reading schizophrenic delusions, if I wanted to do that I'd just log onto Red State, Little Green Footballs or Power Line.

And, for what it's worth, I'm fish-belly white and grew up in the deep South during Jim Crow, by rights I should be as bigoted as Bull Connor. I can tell you who is going to be blowing the dog whistles like a steam calliope on steroids in this election if Obama gets the nomination and it ain't Obama.

I'm fish-belly white, grew up in the deep South during Jim Crow and I'm blue collar to the core.

You might be surprised at what some blue collar folks really think. Not all of us are as stupid or as ignorant as you are implying.

@ David

I'm really not sure what to say. I wasn't trying to "shut Tom up," just respectfully asking him to back off for the duration of my exchange with Kate.

For the rest, I'm not entirely sure what you're trying to say.

@ Red

Agreed, but here's where it becomes impossible to have a meaningful discussion about racism.

The term needs definition before we can seriously evaluate how it effects us all and, more importantly, what to do about it.

I've not studied critical race theory, but it's in the air in my circles, so I have some basic understanding of the complexity of the issue, in scholarly terms, as well as my own personal experience as a black male, fwiw.

All of which is just to say it's worth discussing, but it must be handled with care. I feel the fact that most people are incapable of or unwilling to handle the issue with care is the heart of the problem.

Which is why Obama's speech was truly a revelation.

@weeping

according to the philosophy behind critical race theory, it doesn't matter what your INTENT was, you EFFECTIVELY shut tom up. why? in order to give that victim-punisher, KateTex a wider canvas. why? i posited it was your aversion to tribal loyalty. you say you didn't understand that. perhaps you ARE that dull.

I ran a bar in the Ozarks for a year. I've worked construction jobs, and landscaping. I know full well that there are wise, grounded, deeply intelligent working class folk. Unfortunately, I also know how many closet klansmen there are out there. Walt Whitman knew our variousness; we're probably a great deal more homogenized than we were a century ago. Strip malls and mega media. And, this being Kate's Day, otherwise known as April Fool's, I'd like to announce that I"ve switched genders, races, and candidates. I'm now a black woman for Billary, and I've love to have a greasy threesome with Hill, Kate, and Mazola. Oh. My. Gawd. Hey, I just flew in from a Klan rally and boy are my arms tired. On a closing note, Obama picks up another Senatorial endorsement, the woman (whose name presently escapes me) from Minnesota. So, those that know the Hillster the best continue to run from her as they would from a burning building. NOw, back to that chamomile. Oh, and piss off, Shawn, you fascist tool. That felt good.

Now, is that Magic, or what!

so you came back, tom. yes i too, like weepy, found my eardrums ringing sometimes. however, i truly dislike KateTex and think her in essence, if not in consciousness, a racist. i find weeping a mass of contradictions as well, but his errors seem more ideological. as Obama continues to pile up delegates, Hillary supporters will drop out - EXCEPT folks like Kate, who THRIVE on venom and rancor. i'd suggest you not taunt her, but unlike weeping, i always just scroll past stuff.
