Barack Obama, working-class hero?

On a bus tour through Pennsylvania, Obama tries to impress blue-collar white voters. He'll need them to keep the state close in April -- or to win it in November.

The letters thread is now closed.

I think it could work

Don't forget they said he couldn't get the white vote before Iowa, enough of the black vote because he wasn't "black enough" before South Carolina, votes in red states before he got those, Latino and working class votes before he got those in Virginia and Wisconsin and swing states Democrats have to win before Virginia, Maryland, Wisconsin, Missouri and Minnesota.

Everything they say he can't do, he keeps doing. He's definitely down in PA and agree the Wright comments help. But working class states appreciate someone really getting out there and working for their votes. He runs a few more ads on how he helped steel workers as a community organizer (unemployed steel workers ain't gonna care if they're black or not) maybe he can just swing a few votes his way.

"Working class hero" Obama

If BO is pro-working class, why did he vote for Bush's "Class Action Fairness Act"? Oh and by the way, BO is trailing McCain in Virginia by 12 today.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A32674-2005Feb17.html

House Majority Whip Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) said in support of the bill, "Frivolous lawsuits are clogging America's judicial system, endangering America's small businesses, jeopardizing jobs and driving up prices for consumers."

But Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), the House minority leader, and other Democrats charged that the legislation is a payoff to big business, at the expense of consumers, for supporting Bush's reelection.

"When Americans are injured or even killed by Vioxx or Celebrex or discriminated against by Wal-Mart, they may never get their day in court," Pelosi said.

"This bill is the Vioxx protection bill, it is the Wal-Mart protection bill, it is the Tyco protection bill, and it is the Enron protection bill," said Rep. Jay Inslee (D-Wash.), the Associated Press reported.

Casey

Don't overestimate Casey's endorsement. The only reason he won his election was that he was running against "man on dog" Rick Santorum. We here in PA were so ready to get rid of him we would have voted for anyone who ran against him.

Casey is a boring speaker and a terrible campaigner. Rumor is they check his pulse twice an hour to see if he is still alive.

And we all know

Just how Obama became 'black enough' in South Carolina - by sacrificing Hillary and Bill Clinton on the altar of Win At Any Cost. I don't give a fig what any of you call me, what poison darts comes shooting out next, how many times I'm called a racist. I'm beyond caring, way beyond. The truth is out there, it's been out there all along. And someday, hopefully sooner than later, it will gain currency.

@ ljwalker

Hey, lj.

"He may not even lock up the Black vote in Pennsylvania's urban areas, at least not in Philly"

???

Why not?

Why is Hillary so Blue-Collar?

Why is Hillary Clinton considered so blue-collar? She was educated at Wellesley and at Yale -- hardly bastions of the working class, and I suspect she's even a worse bowler than Obama is! Obama's policies respond to the economic needs of those struggling with unemployment, housing woes, globalization, and other challenges that are very real to working class America. He did not grow up in privilege. He needs to get his message out loud and clear and not allow himself to be defined by the Clinton machine.

EXCELLENT

This is PERFECT !!

He should have been doing this all along

It's time to pivot the campaign

Start talking to white ethnics, to working class people, to factory workers

Don't worry about college campuses

They're locked up, already !!

It's true, the more people get to know Obama, the more they like him

Hillary, is just the opposite....

The more you know about that woman, the LESS you like her

Lying about Bosnia, Lying about NAFTA, Lying about Northern Ireland, lying about supporting the Iraq War and lying about her 'experience'...

Your time is almost over, Billary !!

@ weeping for brunnhilde: An Answer to Your Question

Michael Nutter (Philadelphia's mayor, who is Black) was interviewed on ABC News last night about the upcoming primary and other political matters. He was asked about Rev. Wright's comments and whether Nutter would have stayed and supported Wright if it had been his church or pastor. Nutter said, "No" and gave a really reasoned and thoughtful response to the answer. Here's the link to the story:

http://abcnews.go.com/print?id=4549699

Now, Nutter is also Ivy League educated, he's smart and creative, and he has done a lot of good work in Philly. This is why I think Obama may have trouble. To date, there hasn't been a lot of pushback to Wright's comments from respected Black leaders. Nutter is respected in the city and in the Black community and has now spoken out.

@ Frankie M

Why, indeed, is Hillary considered so blue collar.

I've often wondered this myself. Why is this touted as her "natural base?"

I think it's a combination of her evidently having cultivated this demographic (in upstate NY, I suppose?) as well as race.

Having grown up black among this demographic (anecdotal evidence, I admit), I can testify that "uppity negroes" are not heartily embraced.

The simplified answer, then, is that race is more of a factor than gender.

I could be dead wrong, but that's my whack at the question.

How he can win PA and white, rural voters

When he is the general election candidate he can choose Sen. Jim Webb as his VP because he is strong on military and has a very steady persona. He is also more socially conservative to balance out the ticket, while still being against the war. Choosing him also guarantees he'll win Virginia.

I agree with a previous letter writer. I'm not sure why Madden is so snarky about Obama's educational background. Clinton is virtually the same. All pols these days seem to be overeducated and/OR super rich like John McCain. None of them can really claim working class hero status. At least Obama did work as a community organizer for many years. That is the hardest and worst-paying job around. I'd take a factory job any day of the week.

@ lj

I appreciate your response, lj, and especially your civility.

Cheers.

@lolcait & KateTex

lolcait :

I think Billary just got caught lying about Bosnia

She really didn't come under sniper fire

She got caught lying about Macedonia

She really didn't help open the border, it was open before she came

She got caught lying about NAFTA

She really did support NAFTA

It's a BIG problem for Billary

Most people KNOW she's a LIAR

Most people don't trust Nillary

END OF STORY

Barack Obama is inevitable

Barack Ibama will be your next President

DEAL WITH IT, lolcait

But, keep sticking up for Aryans, KateTex

How you gonna feel when your nation is run by a black man ?

Better stock up on your meds, KateTex
