re: Winner Take All!
fortunecookie,
"Whoever wins the Democratic nomination will be confronted with the Republican dirty tricks, no matter what John McCain says."
Sorry fortunecookie, but there will be no need for dirty tricks. The Democratic nominee will have sufficient baggage from the current war which is waging now (and make no mistake, it is now a political war) that John McCain will simply use all that is now out there and win hands down.
The Democratic Primary has provided him all the ammunition he needs to win. Take a look at the polls. It's not looking good for either Obama OR Hillary right now!!!

I tend to agree with what Eileen said - but I've always believed thay are both politicians and in that case, it might be possible for some people to believe that they have both lied about different things, some of which might be more important to some people than they are to others. Personally, I just don't get that worked up about it, because, as I said, they are both politicians.
I realize you probably think that makes me cynical and evil. No. I'll tell you what it means. In November, instead of sitting home in a snit because 'my' candidate (which is actually neither of these candidates, the one I preferred is long gone) didn't get the nomination, or voting for McCain because 'my' candidate didn't get the nomination, I'll do what I need to do, which is pull the lever or push the button for the Democrat.

Unfortunately, many will not which means a likely win for John McCain. Frankly, I think Obama and Hillary have done this to themselves!!!

@ Eileen
I don't know if you responding to me, or in part to me, but if you go back and read my remarks, I think you'll find your response to be a non-sequitur.
I'm not talking about biography, I'm talking about basic philosophical differences regarding how politics is to be practiced, how voters are to be appealed to, how challenges are to be responded to, etc.
The two really represent two radically different political ethoses.
Your pointing to the fact that they both have ivy league educations, etc., is not germane to my argument.
-
@ Sue
I agree they are both politicians and that of course, Obama will display some of the uglier features that go with the territory.
But to me, it is a question of degree.
-
@ Eileen
One of the concrete examples I used was the Clintons' apparent ethos of cronyism or loyalty, as evidenced by Carville's "Judas" remark.
I've seen nothing so far to suggest this is the operative ethos of the Obama camp.
This is important to me because I believe that this very ethos has had catastrophic effects in the Bush administration. The fact that it seems to be operative in the Clinton campaign to is cause for concern, wouldn't you agree?--especially given that she has criticized Bush for his cronyism.
So is it cronyism per se that Clinton repudiates, or just Bush's cronyism?
Do you have any thoughts about that?

@weeping for brunnhilde
I wholeheartedly agree with your contention re: the two candidates' political ethos or philosophy.
wholeheartedly.
(there's no way I could ever have put it quite as eloquently as you have though :)

Hillary Rodham Clinton
There are also a great many people out here who do look forward to eight more years of Clinton administration, not 4000 kids dead.

Hankster,
"There are also a great many people out here who do look forward to eight more years of Clinton administration, not 4000 kids dead."
Good luck with that...but given the current political climate, you'll forgive me if I do not hold my breath.
BTW, the 4,000 dead are not "kids" but volunteer soldiers who have to be at least 18 or older and have voluntarily signed a contract with the US government to be a soldier in the US military. At least they had the option of choosing to join, rather than being drafted.

You are a man with a cold heart. Just so you know, the kids who join the military, most of them come from poor families, white or black. Your statement only shows that you and the warmongers in this country have such little regard for lives of people who do not belong to a certain strata of society
-
@ debaser
Thank you!
What's dismaying, though, is that Clinton supporters never (or rarely) respond to my comments.
I'm really curious as to what they think.
And since the last thing I want to be is intellectually lazy or blindly ideological, I'm open to anyone adducing evidence that my analysis is flawed.
But I just hear silence.
Those who do respond to me do so mostly with non-sequiturs, refusing to actually engage.
I really want real dialogue here, not talk radio-style: "Fuck you!"--"No, fuck YOU!"
That's the real shame of it all, that substantive discussion is so hard to have.

Madam, you could not be more incorrect. I happen to currently BE in the US Army and worry about my troops all the time. BUT I know they are NOT children, but grown men and women who have made a decision to join the US military. Further, you are also incorrect in saying most come from poor families...they come from ALL walks of life and different backgrounds. Finally, I (like many currently in the military) am amused by your term of warmonger...no one who has to go fight a war WANTS to do that. What sane person would want to willingly get shot at? BUT, we swear an oath to do what our Commander-in-Chief tells us to do and, after being given orders, get in and do the best we can to get the job done!
Frankly Madam, I believe you should talk to the people in the military BEFORE making statements you don't comprehend.
