If Clinton beats the odds and wins the Democratic nomination, Republicans will say she stole it. And then they'll try to give voters a 1990s flashback.

  • And if I flap my arms and fly to Pluto

I will make history. But there's something less likely: Hillary winning this nomination. Did Joan Walsh make you write this?

  • Unelectable

McCain would mop the floor with Hillary. Her pandering Republican-lite act won't fool enough independents to carry the day. The right wing media has spent the past two decades painting her as a card-carrying Communist, leading Hillary to a series of increasingly bizarre political contortions, up to and including the co-opting of right wing hawkish talking points and truly asinine votes (the Iraq War being the most glaring example). She's a colossal phony, and lacking her husband's mesmeric charisma even casual observers can sense it.

Ironically, with the economy in the toilet thanks to Republican-lead deregulation and the Iraq War increasingly unpopular among independents, Hillary would have been better off remaining true to the "liberal" image the media had painted for her to begin with. The problem with the Clintons - now as in the '90s - is that there's virtually no limit to their willingness to pander and sellout their values (and the core supporters of the Democratic Party) in order to advance their short-term political ambitions.

  • One thing Hillary has that McCain will never have:

Hillary attended Wellesley College and she was the "President of the College Republicans". OUCH! Take that McCain....or take that democrats. I can't figure out which party it's worse for!

  • Precisely the opposite? Not a chance.

Clinton may have precisely the opposite problem that Obama has.

This is like saying that people living in the aftermath of a tsunami have exactly the opposite problem of people who are watching the tide get rapidly sucked out to sea. Or that a deer which is flying through the air after having been hit by a truck has exactly the opposite problem as one which is standing frozen in the oncoming headlights.

Every single thing that has happened to the Clintons will happen to the Obamas. If anything is different it will be in the details but don't even count on that being the case — the GOP is perfectly capable of nakedly recycling the entire Hillary Clinton attack plan with Barack Obama written in instead.

The only thing that will make a difference is effective campaigning and party unity. If the primary loser buries the hatchet and throws his or her weight behind the winner, and the party actually supports a national campaign instead of floundering around, the Democrats can win in November.

  • Not the Republicans Fault

Please don't give the republicans credit for my decision. Hillary has given me many reasons not to vote for her without any help from republicans.

  • Unsavory, Undelectable, thoroughly Unelectable...

People will not enthusiastically support a priveledged dynasty duo of Washington insiders to return to rule in this country.

  • The Joan Walsh Attack Plan for Barack Obama...

is to keep a steady stream of Hillary shilling coming at us every day here at Salon.

  • Left out a few things

I'd suggest listening to more talk radio. They're focusing on taxes and NAFTA right now.

  • Brooks, NYT

Oh my. these are the end times. I agree with David Brooks. Read his new column on NYT on line. It skewers Billary's chances with delicious precision. But our Billary and her fellow douche bags, male and female and hermaphrodite, is going to piss in the punchbowl for another month, at least. Probably two. All she is doing is making Warmonger McLame's job in the fall easier by the day. That's great for America, right Hillbots? War forever. Vetoes that we can't override, thus strangling any progressive legislation- any at all. Tax breaks for the Clintons while the rest of us lose our homes, our jobs, and, in the military, our lives. Another 2000, at least, will die, and tenfold that number of Iraqis, all because Billary lacks any grace, and perspective, anything but seething bottled blonde ambition. Screw her. bill won't.

  • Remember when Alex K. wondered who was disagreeing with Politico's conclusions about Hillary's chances?

I guess we know now that it's Joan and Salon.

  • The Tonya Harding Option

I'm not as concerned with the GOP attack plan as I am about Hillary's. This from Jake Tapper of ABC News today:

I just spoke with a Democratic Party official, who asked for anonymity so as to speak candidly, who said we in the media are all missing the point of this Democratic fight.

The delegate math is difficult for Sen. Hillary Clinton, D-NY, the official said. But it's not a question of CAN she achieve it. Of course she can, the official said.

The question is -- what will Clinton have to do in order to achieve it?

What will she have to do to Sen. Barack Obama, D-Illinois, in order to eke out her improbable victory?

She will have to "break his back," the official said. She will have to destroy Obama, make Obama completely unacceptable.

"Her securing the nomination is certainly possible - but it will require exercising the 'Tonya Harding option,'" the official said. "Is that really what we Democrats want?"

The Tonya Harding Option -- the first time I've heard it put that way.

It implies that Clinton is so set on ensuring that Obama doesn't get the nomination, not only is she willing to take extra-ruthless steps, but in the end neither she nor Obama win the gold.

  • hillary the last of the piloried women

Bottom Line: men are afraid of women

they do not like smart women

    they need compliant women's support

woe betide the woman who out does

    a man

If Hillary is the candidate and wins

the world will tilt on its axis

THIS IS NOT POLITICS; IT IS PRIMEVAL

  • "Republicans will say she stole it"

Republicans will say "she stole it"? Republicans? As in Brooks Brothers rioting Republicans?

    I'm laughing so hard I can't breathe.

  • Nothing Special

The GOP attack plan against Clinton is to point at her and say, "Look! It's Hillary Clinton!"

That may be all it'll take. There's a pretty big anti-Clinton crowd, and it even includes a lot of the people who did better under Clinton than any other administration.

That's not easy baggage to leave aside.

I'll vote for her if she takes the nomination. McCain's crazy.

I prefer Obama at this point, but I miss Edwards.

  • Would the Republicans even have tot try very hard?

How can a Democratic candidate who has a 271-266 electoral vote outcome as her upside, even need a full bore Republican attack in the fall?

I have posted numerous times before that the Dem nominee needs to: a) rally the base, b) demoralize the opposition, and c) increas turnout from unlikely voters to win in November.

Hillary today permanently erased any pull she might have with major portions of the Democratic base with her Pastor Wright attack. She has demonstrated already that her presence energizes the opposition to the point where thousands of Operation Chaos Limbaugh followers broke the law in Ohio to support her. And turnout will suck in November with her as the head of the ticket.

At this point, I think she is stark raving mad crazy and needs a come-to-Jesus moment to understand that her desperate antics in these final stages hurt her as much as anyone.

P.S. What the hell about the Bosnia sniper fire story?

P.P.S. I'm sure Joan Walsh will chime in late friday with her Fair and Balanced, ask everyone else what they think post. Here it is in advance.
