Why is secessionism always a good thing no matter what?
Even if it involves a 50 year fight to the death? It seems clear that China will never relinquish Tibet - whether it's because they truly believe that it's an integral part of China or it's for some more abstract reason. Tibet is and will be part of China. And the Dalai Lama seems to agree with that. After almost 5 decades of less than zero progress that seems to be the case. So basically they're fighting now for the de-Chinafication of Tibetan society?
Well I have to ask the Salon readers here why that's so awful? You yourselves support a world w/o national boundaries where nation states don't matter, cultural and ethnic differences are like brand affinities and religions of all kinds are pushed to the margins. What makes the Tibetans and their clinging to a society hundreds of years in the past comparatively, with all that entails - poverty, poor public health, curtailed education, lack of infrastructure? It seems that it's the well wishing liberals in the west who want to maintain a faux Shangri-La like illusion for Tibet.
