Two Wrongs Don't Make a Right
It sickens me to read the nattering on about torture and lack of WMD's. Guess what folks, we had a chance to put a clear end to it and we FAILED. Our politicians failed and we brought them back into office. That's called in educational terms Positive Reinforcement. Keep going Bush!
Let me get this straight, this boneheadedness justifies giving Eliot Spitzer a break because the electorate is too stupid and gullible to kick GWB and company out of office for clear, patent lying?
Spitzer clearly violated his office and the law and deserves what he gets. If someone wants Bush indicted, go do it. See how far you get.
One thing that I don't understand is why people are surprised at how Bush has gotten away with his actions. We live in a violent and violence-loving nation where guns are rampant but health care is scarce. We, the people, accept it but bi#*& and moan about it. That's America. Maybe someday soon we will all get sick of the lying and vote out the losers, but until then, blame yourself for Bush and company, but don't give the Spitzers of the world a pass on dishonesty.

Tragic?
There's nothing "tragic" about this. Elliott Spitzer is a truly evil man who has built his own career by destroying others'. He's ruined lives of innocent people in pursuit of power and fame. The arrogance with which he pursued all those baseless persecutions (many of which never even resulted in criminal charges, much less convictions) has now brought about his fall. Who else but an arrogant pig would think he could get away with this?
While I feel sorry for his children, I feel only joy that this monster has been brought to heel. When I heard the news about Spitzer I was joyful--shouting and clapping my hands--just like all the other people in the room with me.
Tragic? I think not. Justice? Perhaps. We'll see what the payback for the "effing steamroller" turns out to be.

So What,
eliot spitzer is not the first, nor will he be the last, politician to be involved in a sex scandal. his only problem is that he got caught. it was not that long ago, that our president, bill clinton, was caught up in a sex scandal (he just wanted a little head) and manage to come through it. hell, the man is human and is allowed to be just that, human. okay so he talked a big game and was not able to live up to his standards, but he HAS been doing a good job, just let him continue.

Spit-lizard - Model of Sleaze
Walt describes spitzer as a "model of rectitude".
Why?...Why on earth?
When Ken Starr investigated clinton, liberals went ballistic over his forays into what they described as bill's personal sex life.
Ok, let's accept Starr's behavior as that which should be condemned.
Problem is, spit-lizard did the same thing to Dick Grasso.
If you were outraged by Ken Starr's investigation, I would assume you feel the same about spit-lizard.
I think this is why Wall Street cheered when they heard the news. He was not a model rectitude.

Ozziebear is right
As others have said, we've spent over seven years with a President and administration that has truely raped the nation in so many profound ways. There seems to be little concern among the multitude. Get caught with your pants down and the whole nation goes crazy. It really is silly. Craig is a hypocrite, Vitter is a hypocrite and Spitzer is a hypocrite. My problem isn't with their "hobbies" but with their quite different public and professional positions. And frankly speaking, prostitution should be legalized, taxed and regulated.
Bill clinton was a notorious womanizer. Well before he was elected that was common knowledge. Hillary clinton was the victimized wife? Hell no, she put up with it because she was reaping benefits from the marriage. Larry Craig's wife had no idea about her husband's sexual interests? If not, then she was the only one. Craig's sexuality was rumored and discussed in public and print for a long time before his date with destiny in that men's room...and he was confronted with it in person several times. Politics is, unfortunately, a sleazy business. There are perks that come with being a Senator's wife, a Governor's wife, a First Lady (ask Jackie about turning a blind eye). Frankly speaking, these women probably couldn't care less where their husbands stick theor dicks (and are probably glad they don't have to deal with them). I never look at them standing there and think that she looks like a betrayed wife. to me they always just look really pissed off that the bottom has dropped out.

Tragedy or stupidity?
The man banged a hooker and got caught. No it's not just sex, or a private matter, because he's a governor who used to be an attorney general who bragged about busting up sex rings. And hiring a prostitute is against the law, which he has sworn to uphold.
But worse than all that in my mind is the fact that after humiliating himself and dooming his career, the jackass asks his wife to stand up on a stage with him when the shit hits the fan. (When will wives stop doing this?) The woman looked like she had been frog-marched in front of the kleig lights to give the appearance that she was standing by her man. A truly brave person would have made his apologies without asking his humiliated spouse to stand there like a crutch.
And while he had the mic handy, he should have resigned.

Tragedy
When in doubt, check Webster's: 'Tragedy...dealing with a serious or somber theme, typically that of a great person destined through a flaw of character or conflict with some overpowering force, as fate or society, to downfall or destruction...a lamentable, dreadful, or fatal event or affair; calamity; disaster'.
So, you could parse a word here and there, but this is a tragedy, brought on by hubris, arrogance, power, too much money, too much access, morally challenged ethics, etc. The tragedy most of all is to the three daughters, and then to the wife. My heart aches for the daughters.
The hypocrisy is so familiar to us all: the crusader against XYZ who is found practicing XYZ.
