The tragic fall of Eliot Spitzer

He once busted up "sex rings" himself, but the New York governor's hiring of a pricey prostitute has shattered his political career.

The letters thread is now closed.

more than just hypocricy

We are not talking about someone who proclaims he is against something then is secretly taking part. That would be hypocrisy. We are talking about someone who prosecuted people for this same crime. That is corruption. It is serious. It has nothing to do with puritanism. Every case he prosecuted should be called into question.

WTF?

How is prostitution the business of the FBI?

Under what reasonable framework could they ever get a warrant for a wiretap for this sort of thing?

Why would they ever make such a thing public except in the course of a prosecution?

Oh I forgot 9/11!!!

Neuter 'em all

How many sex scandals do we have to put up with, year in and year out? Enough already. We neuter our cats and dogs, don't we? There should be a requirement to neuter all public servants so our attention is no longer diverted from the real issues of war, education, poverty and you can fill in the gaps.

All religious blow hards, preachers and ministers, priests and monks, nuns and nunettes.

Can you imagine what the country would be like today if we had snipped the testosterones of Bill Clinton, Larry Craig, et al?

If not neuter, then let's just legalize prostitution, collect tax revenues to build our broken schools, roads and bridges and get on with it.

The hypocrisy of it all.

A Man Without a Conscience Defiles New York State's Executive Branch

If only there were methods for those whose lives he's ruined--especially during his crusade against prostitutes--to seek civil redress against this man with no conscience, who prosecuted them with the vigor of a crusading saint while simultaneously personally engaging the the very behavior he so condemned in the courtroom....

The lack of integrity and the cold, calculating cruelty of this guy are absolutely breathtaking. Otherwise, his patronizing prostitutes isn't even noteworthy.

Another feather in Harvard Law School's cap.

remember Thompson's "better than sex" publication...

nailed Clinton's persona years prior to the intern story breaking? Obama certainly has his secrets but we will not care anymore about his adventures then we did Clinton's. Let's not be so naive. Remember when Spitzer went after the university financial aid officers? It made us all feel good about how we much we imagine we're getting screwed by the cost of sending our kids to college. But truth is, we all know it is worth it (we wouldn't pay for it otherwise)! But that feeling of self-righteousness is oh so satisfying, maybe even worth a $4,600 four-hour session with a beautiful high priced companion.

@Voice of Reason

Agree.

The vileness of this guy is almost beyond comprehension.

The question is, other than losing his job and being convicted of a minor federal offense, will there be any other avenues of redress available for those he crushed as the Attorney General of the State of New York?

Monday, March 10, 2008 09:38 PM

@LBWalker and many others

Don't be silly. It just isn't trivial when a bona fida DA hero, famous for prosecuting the bad guys, is caught deliberately breaking the law and patronizing the very same industry he'd previously prosecuted multiple times and publicly denounced.

It just stinks of hypocrisy,sleaze and is embarassing and damaging to the entire party. Make no mistake the real victim IS the Democratic party. Hell only knows what the fallout of this will be. At a minimum, Governor Bloomberg.

It's enough to make you agree with Madame Fauntley's suggestion that we neuter them before they're inaugerated.

GOVERNOR SPITZER, I FORGIVE YOU!!!

I am a New Yorker and admirer of Governor Spitzer.

I am willing to forgive him for what so much he has accomplished and he deserves at least once for our forgiveness.

I may be jaded. I never expect politicians are not human beings who are destined to making some mistakes.

Considering what Governor Spitzer has accomplished during his outstanding public career as Attorney General until now. I am willing to give him a break.

I still have faith in him and his vision to reform New York politics.

I know many his foes will take this opportunity to tear him down when he is in the weakest position. As a New Yorker, I will not buy their attacks. In my mind, Governor Spitzer is still a vilable politician with great potentials. I hope he will survive in this crisis and New Yorkers will give him the second chance.

Hasn't it said that we all deserve a second chance? Needless to say, most of us need more than a second chance to overcome all the odds in our lives, whether they are caused by ourselves or by misfortune.

no flogging??

He couldn't take 2 minutes to find a better deal on DC's Craigslist? His must have a ridiculous sense of self-entitlement to that much on a prostitute (or do you just have to spend top dollar if you prefer unsafe sex)?

What do you say to your daughters? "Honey, if you're going to let strange men insert their penises into your mouth, vagina, and anus in exchange for money, aim high!"

The outrage has nothing to do with an extramarital affair, or puritanical values. Details of this particular encounter reveal a painfully tacky man. I might be impressed if he confessed his need to play the role of an adult baby, but this decidedly unthrifty vanilla "adventure" is just...gross.

Driving while illegal

Eliot Spitzer whored himself out when he tried to protect identity thieves for the sake of the Latino vote. I say let him burn a while.

@may2002

I've got some beach property in Arizona you might find attractive as an investment.

Couldn' t have happened to a nicer guy...

The tragic fall of Eliot Spitzer...couldn't have happened to a nicer (read: more deserving) guy.

Monday, March 10, 2008 10:35 PM

I'll say it a little more directly

Reform politicians who hold themselves up as moral exemplars run the risk of not living up to their own self-proclaimed ethical standards.

There's a little bit more going on here than being an exemplar or having unrealistically high standards.

He had other humans beings locked in filthy steel cages for prostitution.

If those people belonged in cages, then where does Spitzer belong?

What kind of sense of entitlement does this man have?

His sense of entitlement is sickening.

He's a symbol of this whole sick over-incarcerated hypocritical society.
