The tragic fall of Eliot Spitzer

He once busted up "sex rings" himself, but the New York governor's hiring of a pricey prostitute has shattered his political career.

The letters thread is now closed.

Is Chelsea the loser with Spitzer's resignation?

What will happen to the agreement between Spitzer and the Clintons to appoint Chelsea to fill Hillary's Senate seat should Hillary end up on the Democrat ticket, now that Spitzer is set to resign? Greg Neubeck

Spitzer=Coward Exploits Whores

He should be deported

Cover Your Bush, It's An Embarrassment

I'll admit it, I don't know my spitzer from my pataki: and that's the way it should be. I'm an American, not a Knickerbocker so I'm not going to get my knickers in a twist about the US Attorneys scandal. Why should I care about political operatives posing as prosecutors? Everyone needs friends, because friends are the people you describe in terms of one own worst traits. That's why I don't want to know nobody from nothing. If Nigerians are smuggling Betty Crocker yellowcake to Arabs, please don't explain.

Tragic Fall

This is truly tragic. I feel certain he will resign. He really has no other choice. I disagree with the people who say Democrats should now rally in support of Spitzer. That’s really just absurd. The successful careers of so many political and corporate high-fliers seem to have encapsulated within them the seeds of their own destruction. It’s a fascinating psychological study, but offers nothing to rally around.

I also disagree with the people to label such scandals as frivolous and suggest that we should become more worldly, like Europe and other more socially and politically sophisticated cultures, and simply yawn. While I find the obsession with seamy fallibility tedious in our own culture, having lived for a time in Europe and Asia, I know that they really offer nothing substantively different, just a greater tolerance of hypocrisy. They are certainly every bit as obsessed with the prurient details of celebrities’ lives.

What I find tragic about this situation is that I have little doubt of the good intentions of Governor Spitzer or that the criminals he pursued deserved to be pursued. He was not one to wink at corporate crime. It was reassuring to have him in office, knowing that he was relentless in his efforts. Unfortunately, he was not someone, like Bill Clinton, who could defend himself by saying: “I never claimed to be perfect.” He tenacious efforts implied a commitment to restoring what may well be a mythological era of transparency and fairness in corporate culture. But it was a myth that cast him as the hero on a white horse that wasn’t so white after all.

Derivative Crimes

Want a great source on the absolute and hideous growth of Federal prosecutors? Google Bill Anderson, here is an example in regards to this Spitzer situation.

Spitzer is basically getting nailed for the same unconstitutional bs that he has ruined other people's lives, so it is kind of poetic, but that doesn't mean we should all be cheering yet another abuse by the ever-growing federal prosecutors, who can stick any of us in jail for almost anything these days...

Something is Terribly Wrong Here—But Whose Business is It?

Thank you Mr. Shapiro for the dignified manner in which you have written your article. You're more of a gentleman than most of your peers.

By all accounts it is the wife and children that are wronged. And apparently the wife is standing with her man and that is her own private business. Did I say private? Nothing private here.

The drooling hyenas that have been wronged by Mr. Spitzer can't wait to get at him, and you can bet they'll leave nothing but his entrails. But wait, hyenas also eat entrails. Okay, some do have a beef. It's the gossiping prurient NY press and electronic media that nauseates me—Those that can't wait for "the rest of the (dirty) story" from the private life of, albeit a hypocrite.

There are serious issues confronting the country, and a democratic election that is bogged down and about to splinter the party. Must we be held captive again to men living out their fantasies with the ladies of the night?

Instead of Pilates, wives should take lessons from these highly paid women, and maybe their men will stay home.

It's just as stupid when one of ours does it...

I said it when the discussion was toe-tapping and I'll say it again, this is a stupid non-issue and it always should have been. When I heard the words "Eliot Spitzer" "caught" and "prostitution," I thought, "well if it's such a fuss, he must have been running the damn thing." Nope. That someone wants a thrill so badly he's willing to pay for it, shouldn't be so shocking. Is he getting Larry Craiged? Yes. 100%, and by that I include the fact that he set the fake outrage trap for himself, and then spectacularly fell into it. Bravo, and thank you. Now please go away.

Client 9, Client 9, Client 9 . . .

Remember the Beatles' haunting "Revolution #9" with the cryptic repetition of the phrase, "Number 9, number 9, number 9 . . ."?

Suppose Spitzer's hearing something similar?

"Client 9, Client 9, Client 9 . . ."

I don't get it

selling sex has been around forever, I can't wait until prostitution and marijuana is legal, then we can concentrate or really important issues, like, where did all that money go we sent to Iraq, and why are our veterans being treated so shitty and why do child molesters have the opportunity to strike again once they have been convicted, you know little stuff like that. I don't care if he wants to buy sex, that's between him and his wife...I don't see the crime unless I'm missing something...or maybe the prices are a bit high-is that illegal?

Spitzer should resign pronto

Eliot prosecuted the same people for the same sins he is guilty of. So please Eliot, don't take the page out of the Clinton hypocrisy book. Be more brave, fess up to your transgression, and resign. You don't have to put your family through the same embarrassment that Bill Clinton did. Don't put your family through any more disgrace.

ladyleo64

Lady, I completely agree with you. This country is sexually repressed. Is it any wonder that preachers and ministers have taken over the sex issues by hammering on homophobia, sexual abstinence and monogamy.

But Spitzer's hypocrisy is that he sent a lot of people to prison for the same sins he is now accused of. That is why his is an indefensible case.

I say, neuter the bastards on inauguration day. That will keep us from being diverted from important issues such as the war in Iraq
