U.S. and Israeli hard-liners -- some with close ties to John McCain -- are once again hyping the Iranian nuclear threat.

  • Who is apocalyptic now?

Lets see - Ahmadinejad was accused of being apocalytic, insane, a dictator, and willing to use nukes.

Bush has explicitly threatened Iran with nuclear first strikes, has insanely invaded another country in violation of international law, authorized torture and "secret rendition", ignored the Constitution, and buddies up with apocalypse-spewing Reverend Hagee.

Has Ahmadinejad ever said that bombing the US is an "option on the table"??

So, who is the real threat to whom?

  • @ Ben Sen

"Will they tell us what it is about her that makes them her hate her more than war, war, and more war? I know they'll deny misogyny because that's too politically incorrect."

Have you lost it, brother? Do you not follow the news? She voted FOR the Iraq war. Hillary Clinton sided WITH George W. Bush on the most important foreign policy issue--and the most tragic foreign policy mistake--for America in over thirty years.

"Is it her moral deficiency since she forgave her husband? Is it something else about her morals, or her campaign, or some other "political" gaff she committed--that McCain didn't that makes him more viable--even though he has clearly gotten into bed with the intolerant."

While I admit that I personally do not approve of the fact that she continued a marriage of political convenience after her husband made a very public mockery of their marriage, no, that is not my reason for excoriating her.

Hillary is PRO-war, period. Voting for her would be no different than voting for McCain, as regards this most crucial of issues.

That is why I would sit out the election if she gets the nomination over Obama. There really is no other reason.

  • Aargh!! Sugarman

So, I start reading here, and then the racist hatemonger David Sugarman's nom de plume shows up. And I'm out of here. I don't eat dinner at the same table as dogs. Good-bye.

  • Hillary Clinton

Hillary love of the Leiberman doctrine makes her just as eager to war with Iran as Mcain. Maybe even more so.

  • It has been said

...and I'm not sure by whom... that some of the tensions between Iran and Israel originate from comments by the Iranian President. These comments, it was said, where translated incorrectly by jewish translators who led the majority of the public to believe that Irans president wanted to see Israel wiped from the face of the earth. If it is true that his words were misunderstood, couldn't much of this trouble be eliminated by a reputable retranslation of the things that Irans president has said. I believe that understanding the truth could save a lot of money and lives in the long run.

The release of the NIE gave us some time to breath when the hawks were having some success in whipping us up like they did previous to the Iraq war. That relief is now aparently gone and something has to be done if we are going to avoid an all out world war.

  • Iran's threat

I find it fascinating how any subject involving the Middle East brings the anti-Sems out of the woodwork, usually cloaking their real (but thinly disguised) bigotry in "anti-Israel", or "anti-Zionist" clothes. And equally striking is the obvious reality of Iran and the threat it poses-- a large and influential Muslim country, led by a fanatic wacko, who has publicly stated murderous genocidal intentions, and well on the way to acquiring nuclear weaponry.

I submit that if this scenario involved any other country as target of this xenophobia and threatened genocide, much of the world (even Salon's fashionistas) would be up in arms about the need to block this obvious major threat to world peace. Ahmanadjead's threats remind me of those by another madman around 60 years ago, who many didn't think would carry out his publicly stated murderous intentions.

I think a very good moral case can be made for 1. invading Iran 2. deposing the current Islamofascist regime and 3. possibly preventing a horrible disaster causing untold loss of life.

And the animus toward little courageous Israel, bastion of democracy and decency in the Middle East, and victim of thousands of Islamic terrorist incidents, is beyond any reason or comprehension--except the oldest prejudice.

    Think about it.

    (and I'm Christian, BTW!)

  • They Will Have An Easier Time Now

Hard liners see an opening now, what with the horrendous attack in Jerusalem and the recent suspicions about Iran's nuclear intentions. In reality, the Israeli/Palestinian issue is steeped in far more grey shades than the hawks imagine, since despite the barbarity of the attack in Israel, many Gazans are energized to commit such crazy acts because of Israel's overzealous response to rocket firings into their territory from Gaza. What is especially shocking is the horror of seeing those young people killed in Israel...yet there was equally horrible killings of Palestinian children as they became collateral damage in Israel's quest to take out militants. What is clear is that such a strategy of routing out militants and killing civilians accidentally is a disastrous policy, fruitless in that it spawns senseless reactive violence from suicide bombers. In interviews on BBC, many compare it to the "troubles" in Northern Ireland, where an endless cycle of violence got nowhere until each side realized they had absolutely nothing to gain with attacking each other and treating each other as though the other were subhuman. On Iran, the more the US and people like McCain raise the temperature of the silly rhetoric, the more radicalized the Iranians become...this is another aspect of the truly failed policy of the Bush presidency McCain is emulating, one that is deeply unpopular with the American people.

BTW...I thank Salon for its excellent articles...I use to write on Huffpo, but found that site toxic in its pro-Obama shilling, where diverse opinions are discouraged if in any way they shatter the othodoxy about the perfection of Obama.

  • I am not anti semetic

I just question the understanding between Israel and Iran. Having read all of the posts, and seen the polarization between the jewish and christian posters, I just wanted to be clear, I am against war, not jews.

Since so many people here believe this is it... the apocalypse, I wonder if anyone is concerned about keeping the 10 commandments and making sure their own houses are in order. I hear way too many people taking the Lords name in vain, and see way too many people breaking the sabbath... be it saturday or sunday... to believe that many of us are ready for this. Remember the parable of the 10 virgins and the bridegroom: fill your lamps with oil now, or when the bridegroom comes you will be off searching for oil in the dark. I'm sure there is huge irony there for the neocons.
