Hillary Clinton's Texas-size moment

All that mattered about the showdown in Austin was whether she could stop Barack Obama's momentum. Were her powerful closing words a magic bullet?

The letters thread is now closed.

Only the Truth, you have been misinformed.

First, this magic "15 million uninsured" number you throw around under the Obama plan is just a random guess put out by people who have a dog in this fight. There are many experts who disagree and say that the Obama plan would cover many more people.

More importantly, the Clinton health plan would not cover everyone either, because even with subsidies, there would still be people who could not afford to purchase private health insurance. Just as in Massachusetts under the failed Mitt Romney mandate plan, some people would find it less expensive to pay the "fine" than to buy health insurance.

The Clinton plan would NOT force the government to provide health insurance for everyone; rather, it would force everyone to buy private health insurance.

And clearly this would be a great benefit to the private health insurance companies, which have donated more money to Mrs. Clinton than to any other candidate.

Anonymous @ 4: l6 a.m. Barack Obama's website ? Which great composer is responsible?

As sexism is so alive and prospering, proof positive of which is on this site alone, it is germane to note the influence of women on Barack Obama's life. Yes, Ann Dunham has passed away as has Hillary Clinton's father and as we all must some day. Ann today, if she had lived, would be a little older than the Boomers but she sure had ideas ahead of her time. Much has been made of Barack's visit to his father's grave in Kenya but far less of any visits to the grave of his mother, Ann. That seems unkind. As to whether Ann Dunham was a Marxist or not a number of people who were her classmates before she went to Hawaii have spoken about that and it's not clear. However, the School Principal was openly Communist. I'm sure you can find out about that yourselves (plural). I'm not too pushed about it but you definitely are. All that rage and twisting of words could bring on dyspepsia.

There's an awful lot of glossing going on about Barack and the idea that he's been female-dependent all his life is riling you even if it is the truth. Michelle Robinson was his boss, helped him to integrate into the African-American community in Chicago, although he was a bi-racial man from Hawaii, and even got him to join her church where the Rev. Jeremiah Wright became his "spiritual mentor". Actually, Michelle is such a g0-getting woman with very strong opinions of her own that she should not be eclipsed by Barack. Yes, it's she who should be the candidate but she'd then have to suffer the caustic comments of the male-dominated media as well as the resentment of all the insecure men who blame their own inadequacies on their mothers/wives/whatever.

Let's Assume Clinton's Health Care Plan is Better

I am not sure which is better but let's assume so, since she spent all those months as First Lady putting one together.

Why does she need to be President to implement it? Has it been advanced while she was a Senator? Wouldn't she need a super majority in Congress?

Who are her supporters with this plan, and who are her detractors in both Congress and the Senate?

We discuss this plan like it comeone can wave a magic wand and "Poof" we have universal health care.

Maybe we can discuss what other players we need to get a universal health care plan through, no matter who the President is, both in the Private and Public arenas?

Does Hillary Clinton have a leg up on those factors? Because right now, either one are just Powerpoint presentations (without the graphs).

Peeps, great point.

Which is why I support Barack Obama. He will be able to build a consensus and a governing mandate to get it done. Rightly or wrongly, fairly or unfairly, Hillary is too divisive to lead on this issue. Further, by going "all out" and demanding a mandate (which even she admits will involve "going after" the wages of people in order to force them to purchase private health insurance) she has guaranteed that her plan will fail. Obama's plan will allow everyone who WANTS to buy into the plan to buy in, and there will be subsidies so that people can afford it -- a better plan than FORCING people to buy private insurance that by definition they cannot pay for. While Hillary offers subsidies too, people will be FORCED to pay -- and it is the government that will decide how much you can afford to pay. Sorry, that sounds a little too Soviet for me.

Anonymous @ 4:2l a.m. Your scenario is enthralling but you forgot the Bobbit moment.

As he got out of bed, he shouted for another gleamingly-white shirt but as he blearily glanced around the floor he realized that he'd thrown his dirty socks there again. She would really have him for this! Nervously, he groped for his wotsits because he knew that she was filled with rage since those years in Princeton when people didn't throw themselves at her feet/ Ah, what a relief! The wotsits were still there and looking quite perky. All that adulation with the media guys kissing his butt was a real aphrodisiac. Still, she didn't quite understand how special he was as she came into the room, in a furious mood and yelling "You've left your lousy socks on the floor again. Don't you ever accept that I'm a Princeton alumnus, have written a brilliant thesis about the honkies and Vogue wants me on its cover". There's a brief lull in the storm as she smiles approvingly at herself in the looking-glass, pats her pears in place over her cashmere sweater. Looking at him with a curling lip, she sneers "Look at how great I am and all you do is make the same speech over and over again. Get in the shower pronto cos you're stinking and, what's more, I'm not getting a wink of sleep from all your snoring". As her cell-phone rings, she changes her tone to a purring sound "Yes, David, just as you say. That thesis could be trouble. Oh, you've fixed it? Mr. Axelrod, you're so cool. He's in the shower right now but I'll give him his orders for the day". The Lorena Bobbit moment has passed.
