Hillary Clinton's Texas-size moment

All that mattered about the showdown in Austin was whether she could stop Barack Obama's momentum. Were her powerful closing words a magic bullet?

The letters thread is now closed.

I am saddened that many Anonymous give Anonymous a bad name.

Huh?

I thought "plagiarism" was supposed to be word-for-word borrowing?

Not sure where the plagiarism is in the Kerry/Obama comparison. Is it possible that Obama did not talk to workers in Youngstown, Ohio? Or that their equipment isn't being moved to China? If neither of those are true, then a criticism of Obama would be in order. If not, then what's the problem?

Anyway, what's most surprising about AKA Smith's link is that it's to a video, and yet she claims that her computer has no speakers so she can't hear anything.

Word is still out on whether Hillary Clinton's use of three sentences that were given to Obama by a colleague is or is not a questionable basis for political attack... Or whether it doesn't make this --

-- into a rather hilarious example of Hillary shooting herself in the foot.

It all depends on what your definition of 'is' is.

"Plagiarism" is whatever AKA Smith wouldn't allow in her English composition class. Didn't you know that?

Doloresflower ...

You are a flower among letter writers :)

W.E.B. DuBois - what a man! Definite purple aura :) During my senior year in college, I fell in love with Zora Neale Hurston, although I was too much of a slacker to do a senior paper. I too think that Obama could be a great president along the lines of Václav Havel ... & I also think I see the compassionate intellectual there. It's truly thrilling! Although I don't kid myself that he too will have his faults.

It's funny with Hillary - I was lukewarm at the beginning, then shocked and angered around the whole SC timeframe, & I guess feeling more sad, yet respectful of her now. I don't at all think the moment last night was staged. I think it's probably one of the few moments that was unstaged, unfortunately. I don't doubt that she has a good heart, and is smart as hell, & dedicated. Unfortunately, though, one moment is just one moment & I just can't trust her be that person as a president given what she has shown us with her campaign. And the potential foreign policy ramifications of listening to screwy advisors or otherwise playing the "manly" game are really scarey to me. I'm ready to take a chance on someone who has been clearer, stronger, & more consistent in his voice.

AKA Smith

Try explaining this:

"Plagiarism is presumably not an issue when organizations issue collective unsigned works since they do not assign credit for originality to particular people" -- From Wikipedia, YOUR source

By the way, why is a college professor citing Wikipedia?

@AKA Smith

I'm an Obama supporter and I think it was plagiarism - mild plagiarism. I think he knew it, and was embarrassed by it, which is why he said something to the effect that yes, he should have attributed Deval Patrick. And from then on, of course, he had to downplay it in the political game.

I don't think it reveals "fear and desperation, a character who lacks the usual conscience, who likes to cut corners, who delights in getting away with things, carelessness combined with an arrogance", however. I think it reveals a man in the heat of a very long and exhausting campaign tour making a stump speech for the umpteenth time who made a mistake, caught up more in the strategy that had been suggested to him than the correct aspects of speechmaking, which I assume he knows as well as anyone who has graduated from Harvard Law magna cum laude.

I also think that the people that you are concerned are too lackadaisical or uneducated about the horror of plagiarism are neither, but instead, like me, simply willing to give him a break in these circumstances, or are simply fed up with these incidences of "gotcha" politics.

Oh, and I think this business about Hillary "plagiarizing" in the debate --"gotcha back!" -- is ridiculous.

To JL....

That is really all I want to hear people say. I too will vote for him in the fall if he is the nominee (providing it doesn't turn out that he plagiarized his books). I am just so damned offended by people who won't admit what you just admitted. It seems dishonest and it makes Obama supporters look bad. It makes them seem as if they are the Bots people accuse them of being. Note that I do not use that term. I have nothing in particular against Obama, but I do think many of his supporters posting on his behalf have colluded in some of the MSMs and the bloggers game of running a sexist and unjust attack upon her. It is hard to forgive that sort of nastiness.

However, what doesn't work in Obama's favor is that he didn't admit the slip for being what it is and that he attacks Hillary for pointing out that it is what it is. I am a very realistic, no bullshit sort of woman. I just like people to be honest. If Obama supporters want me to drop it, then they need to drop their own "silly season" attacks on every word that Clinton says. They are taking the Obamas campaign's lead on this. He could call them off anytime. It is mean-spirited of him that he keeps it going.

Friday, February 22, 2008 09:47 PM

ok AKA

I will go with JL and admit that it was mild plagairism (sp?), but I will say that he apologized quickly, publicly, and appropriately - can ya give him that?

Yes & the whole thing is silly. EVERYONE should drop it.

Can't we all just get along? - I'm feeling magnanimous because it's the weekend. Nobots for me.
