@AKA Smith
AKA Smith: "Attribution is not required if the departure from the original text is great enough and the ideas being used are not particularly original in and of themselves."
.....then you would have to admit that Hillary Clinton is a plagiarist.
If not, then you have to admit that you're slicing hairs with a razor blade in order to avoid admitting that there's anything even remotely resembling hypocrisy in Hillary's position (which there most certainly is).
-
@AKA Smith
AKA Smith: "In this instance, I don't give a damn about Hillary Clinton."
Wow -- yet another weasel move.
"I'm not defending Hillary Clinton!"
Um, am I supposed to take that at face value, when 99% of your time and energy in election-related Salon message forums is spent arguing on behalf of Hillary?
Yet this time, you're devoid of any motivations relating to her cause?
Riiiiiiiiiiiight.

"admitting that her attack on Obama for three lines of a speech was a pointless distraction"
Not to me, it isn't a distraction. To me, it is an important issue. I don't like plagiarism. Too often, I have seen the various things that plagiarism reveals about character. Sometimes it only reveals fear and desperation. However, often it reveals a character who lacks the usual conscience, who likes to cut corners, who delights in getting away with things. Often, there is a carelessness combined with an arrogance. As it Daisy and Tom being "careless people."
I think it is truly worth taking a look at.
It is actually amusing to me that Obama supporters, you included, think that Hillary Clinton is fair game for any kind of smear or slur, but cannot stand it when someone holds Obama accountable. Why is that? What does it say about you?
Why do you think the charge of hypocrisy does not apply to you?
-
we just don't get it
Obama is a plagiarist. "Hillary" is recontextualizing the sentiments of caring and sharing.
-
@ Hutman
Yes, I have defended Hillary from sexism such as I have seen you display. I don't like sexism either. It is not that I am so fond of Hillary. But I hate sexism and I don't like plagiarizers much either. My interests just happen to intersect.

"Not to me, it isn't a distraction"
Oh, we know that, AKA. It's a god damn obsession.

Good day
Okay, now I'm really done with this argument. Time to go have some fun.
But so that others can see it if they're coming late to the game, here's a link to the videos where Hillary Clinton is shown appropriating/copying/plagiarizing/mooching/whatever parts of her speech from other politicians:
http://wonkette.com/359517/hillary-plagiarizes-john-edwards-bill-clinton
And as for you AKA Smith, I have a really hard time believing that you (1) have no opinion about Hillary Clinton's use of "plagiarism" to attack Obama, (2) are not arguing in here due to motivations of defending Clinton, and (3) actually believe that your hair-splitting definitions somehow absolve Clinton of all culpability while damning Obama to the deepest of plagiarizing sins. Frankly, I think you've lost this debate bigtime, and not only that, you've lost any right to proclaim yourself an authority where the English language or integrity of your teaching practice is concerned.
Good day!

Plagiarism: tornado in a teacup
Plagiarism in politics may be simple flattery or theft of issues. No matter which, it's pretty common, and I knew the moment the Clinton forces raised it, it would be a windy issue without any impact.
These posts by our sodality prove it. Conclusively.

@AKA Smith -- against my better judgment
AKA Smith: "Yes, I have defended Hillary from sexism such as I have seen you display."
Um, right. If I am a sexist, then you are equally a sexist. (Or do you think that women are incapable of sexism?)
You have called me a sexist in the past and yet you have never explained why you think so. Example please?
I take a charge of sexism seriously. My response is sincere when I tell you this: Fuck you. You're a lowlife. I feel sorry for the people who have to endure your teaching. You're probably a lousy teacher who can barely lead a class. Seriously, though -- fuck you.

@ John Anderson
If Hillary had handed that text into me, I would have made her revise.
Often, I got those sorts of iffy papers, and I simply made the student revise and revise and revise. I sent them to revision hell. Can you imagine how many times you can insist a student revise until finally, finally she/he produces something wholly original? I did this to students and never bothered to use the words: "You are skirting close to plagiarism here." They knew that they were skirting.
However, Obama's instance of plagiarism would have gotten him an F. He would never have the chance to revise. This is because it was too close to Deval Patrick's previous speech.

"windy impact"
wisely chosen words. a gust of foul air. a mind fart from hillary and her campaign creeps.
-
"I feel sorry for the people who have to endure your teaching."
Me too. I'm tough. Almost every student who completed my class ended up a much better writer than that student was at the beginning. I didn't much care whether they liked me or not. I cared whether or not they learned.
-
@ Xrandadu
All I can say is wrong again. You do not know what you are talking about.
-
@ anonymous - ypou know who you are
A fool I am not. I am not the one swooning for the fake messiah.
-
AKA,
I certainly imagine you must be a Fun Teacher.
I bet all your students Love you.
You must bring them lots of Sunshine and Rainbows.
They probably give you kisses on Rate My Professor.
OK, enough snark. If your pedantic, shrill, narrow-minded, bias-clouded, disingenuous, false, relentless, self-contradictory, and apparently sometimes misspelled assertions of plagiarism here give any indication of your personality or your teaching style (and I fear they must; after all, aren't you trying to "teach" us?), then I think it safe to say that you must be the Lamest English Teacher Ever.
Why don't you just go gentle into that good night, doll?

@AKA Smith
AKA Smith: "Me too. I'm tough. Almost every student who completed my class ended up a much better writer than that student was at the beginning. I didn't much care whether they liked me or not. I cared whether or not they learned."
And yet, you don't seem to care whether YOU learn. Or are capable of learning outside of the realm of literal-minded English.
You are completely incapable of self-reflection when it comes to your own rationalizations and self-serving arguments. There's an inherent dishonesty to you. But hey, pat yourself on the back for being a good teacher all you want, if that's what you have to do to feel good about the bullshit you spew in here.
