Ouch! Now, that hurts!
Ok. I admit it, this hurts. But not as much as it might of, and here is why:
Looking at the numbers this was not--yet--a clear indication of whether Barack Obama has truly broad appeal. It is no spin of the facts to say that the Senator won because of a huge surge of support from the black community. I congratulate him on his victory, and heartily. But the fact remains that Hillary only won 18% of the black vote and he only won 24% of the white vote. That proves that the racial divide is both alive and well in this country. As sad as it is, a lot of white people are going to wake up tomorrow and view this victory as racially motivated. I am not sure if many of them are not going to be angered by it. These are NOT my personal feelings, but my observations and after talking to many of my friends tonight, I believe it may be the fact of the matter.
For the record, I am a total Hillary Clinton supporter. I was before this loss and I am after it. I firmly believe that SHE is the best person to run this county. I believe it with all of my heart. I do not believe that she will lose this primary election, or the general election. But, who knows? I have been wrong before...say, in 2000, and 2004 for instance.
Either way, the Democrats WILL win in November. It is a given. Our voters our turning up in almost twice that the Republicans are. All I can is that the Republicans must be afraid, very afraid.
I can only hope that Hillary will move forward on her own. She has always been better than her husband and this past week has proved that beyond a shadow of a doubt.
Congratulations Barack Obama! You deserved this win! And good luck to you Hillary Clinton, I will the first one to the polls to cast my vote for you--and will do so proudly.
Cheers,
Robert Sandy
