Obama's historic run heads south Did his victory in Iowa and strong showing in New Hampshire really "put to rest the notion that a black candidate can't win in America"?

  • down south

they won't vote for a white Democrat in much of the south, so the fact that they won't vote for Obama either is not important for the general....I still believe he can win all the blue states plus Ohio, New Mexico, Nevada, Colorado, Virginia, FLA., Missouri, Arkansas.....

he's a better candidate than Hillary in the general, but not as strong as Edwards.

  • Obama's "Lack of Experience"

Funny how the Democratic candidate with the most years in elective office-- three more than Hillary, five more than Edwards-- is the one candidate who's "inexperienced." The former employee of Sidley & Austin (one of the top law firms in the world), and the constitutional law instructor at the University of Chicago Law School somehow "needs a bit more seasoning." The candidate who was editor of the Harvard Law Review, has two bestselling books, and a Grammy for spoken word recording "lacks experience." The candidate who worked for nearly four years as a community organizer with unemployed steel workers and public housing residents, the candidate who lived overseas as a youngster-- right, "inexperienced." The guy who won a U.S. Senate seat in Illinois by the largest margin ever, and the one who delivered the most famous keynote speech at a Democratic convention since William Jennings Bryan's "Cross of Gold" speech "should come back in a few years."

Not experienced enough... hmmm.... isn't that what they always say when folks show up for the interview and they find out one of them is a Negro?

  • e-five; Ditto

    great post

  • @sooprgrover: You are quite wrong about GOP they are doomed!!!

You have no idea of the depth of misery in our country all under the stewardship of the GOP in the White House..

All Clinton's right now are lethal in a national elections...

    Obama/Edwards are a lock...

  • South doesn't matter

Obama doesn't need to win the white southern vote. He needs 271 electoral votes, period. He doesn't need Alabama, Georgia, S. Carolina. Doesn't need Idaho or Wyoming. Jesus H. Christ could run as the Democratic candidate and not carry Idaho or Wyoming.

He probably can win the White House without Florida, if he takes the North East, West Coast, Midwest. Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois plus the 2 coasts and New Mexico. That's your majority. Gore, even Kerry, almost pulled it off.

  • This is Not a Black and White World

I would like to ask Mr. Shapiro, his fellow journalists and all the people who read and comment in this space the following question:

I have had African American office colleagues that looked as white as any Caucasian. They were proud of their African heritage and did not hide it. If Barak Obama looked white instead of black, with the very same genetic background of black father, white mother, would we be having these time wasting discussions? I tend to think not. I tend to think the issues facing the American people in their daily lives would dominate today’s headlines.

Not to denigrate the black side of the human equation, but why do we call a half-white, half-black American, a black American when he is also a white American? Isn't he simply an American? Some day Americans of all colors will have to sit down and openly discuss why white somehow becomes tarnished or stained when mixed with another color. Ours is not a black and white world. It's an artist's palette of multihued people.

If indeed we are being looked over by visiting UFOs, it’s no wonder they are not ready to make contact with such bellicose primitive thinkers.

  • Obama should not run away from Reagan but towards him...

Liberals again are the country's most intolerant folks right now.. Of course Reagan despite his shortcomings had a lot of positives..

It is insane for Hillary and Bill to attack Obama for uunderstanding this basic truth..

Obama must seize on this and invoke Reagan where it fits, he will yield great returns if he follows my ideas..

  • susan: get lost.. it is folks like you living in denial playing cum ba ya while hard core raw real world

truths just float right by you..

Your passive rose color view makes life more difficult not easier for people of color expecially those Blacks of a darker hue..

Have you no understanding of the role of color has played in America's racial landscape??

Folks like you remind me of Black apologists who put Blacks in harms way by not being honest and candid with white people..

Leadership does not mean avoidance and delection and "moving on" . Your posture reflects why racism in our county has such a long shelve life..

Do me a favor get out of the way or allow me to chat with your Black peers about life for them.. I doubt if your 'cum ba ya ' ears could handle that discourse..

  • Bill Clinton

Certainly made sure he played the race card for his wife, The Dragon Lady. Stop promoting the idea that a black man can't win. Are you in the Clinton's pocket Walter?????

  • Obama is not a "black" candidate...

He is a "candidate". And that's why he could win in America. "Black candidates" like Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson will not, and should not ever win in America.

Obama is bridging the divide by making it a non-issue. As opposed to the one-act antics of the previous racially opportunistic reverends whose focus was and is controversy and dissention. Why face social facts that can be addressed to make positive differences when there is a Tawanda Brawley around for easy headlines and little required to keep your own face on CNN? When is the last time you heard either of those men talk about teen pregnancy or black on black violence? Never? Not when there is a fleeting but incendiary incident where they can insert themselves. Michael Jackson says he is getting a raw deal from Sony....Al Sharpton to the rescue!!!

Obama is a statesman who will go after issues...not racially charged sound bites. And white folks know that. Sadly, it makes him unappealing to some black folks who refuse to think there is a percentage in returning race relations to a state of dignity.

Let the gender and race free election begin. Because this one isn't about either of those things.

  • I understand White Folks fear of electing someone who is not a White male..

change can bring tension and angst.

Yet White folks should stop being so hard on themselves and putting the entire world's fate on thier shoulders.

I have observed white folks all of my life and I am amazed at the degree of pressure they place on themselves 24/7.

I really marvel at the depth of white folks capacity to hang in there under the greatest odds and loads in th world... THEMSELVES....
