let stop dodging and deal with reality. Given the nitemare war in Iraq and our economy the GOP is out for 2008..
Now should the country elect a woman who has lived in the shadows of her Husband, a woman who has lived off his coattails, a woman who has a right to be on mission..
Or should we vote for a Obama a man who fears his own Blackness, a pretender, a man who has yet to demonstate anything other than great timing and good sense ..
The DEMS/GOP: two parties which have never had a person of color on the ticket
The electorate: a group of voters who impacted by the Bradley Effect, a group of voters who like pandering , a group of voters who have been as rsponsible for our country's meltdown as any other factor..
So where do we go from here.. I say bring it on, all the sleaze, the stench, the bigorty, the rightousness, the sexism, the racism, all of it.. we must elect a new president..everything matters..
Let's do this..Right Here ..Right Now
lol,lol,lol
First off, Obama ran basically UNOPPOSED in that Illinois race because Jack Ryan was caught in a sex scandal.
As for white votes, Obama does NOT have a national profile like Colin Powell or Condoleese Rice who can overcome those obstacles, and as a result, he will not attract white vote in the South -- he will drive numbers up as the Republican hit machine goes racist through third parties, and the supposedly `unifying' figure that you people think Obama represents, will be the most extraordinarily `divisive' figure ever.
Worse, because the Democrats seem torn between Hillary and UnHillary, these two may go into the convention too close to call, which could mean that John Edwards could push Obama over the top -- forcing an unpalatable, inexperienced candidate on voters, and forcing me to not for President -- or forcing Obama as Clinton's vice president -- with all the same problems of trying to attract white votes in the South. And Clintons will be required to somehow drag Obama -- a complete deadweight -- along.
What you don't mention is that Obama won his seat UNOPPOSED. Keyes was not a native Illinoiser. So Michelle's comments -- ONCE AGAIN -- are off the wall.
These are Democratic primaries. His success so far shows that he can win white Democratic votes. If that was ever in doubt, we sure are not the party we thought we were.
Only the general election will show if he can win white votes across the board in a country that is still very racist in my view. The Republicans have used the Southern Strategy to great effect in recent elections - we'll see if it still works. This is the best chance to test it, since their field of candidates is so weak and their president so unpopular.
I grew up in the South and lived through part of the period referenced in the article. I believe that Mr. Obama can be elected. I just don't think he can be elected when running against the Clinton machine. If a white southerner said the same things about Mr. Obama he would be accused of racism and vilified accordingly. With former President Clinton its "just good old Bill, you know how he is. After all he was the first black president." Mr. Obama is running against a ruthless politician and will not survive it. That is unfortunate for him the Democratic Party and the nation.
The Clinton campaign does not get to distort Obama's record on his Iraq vote, twist his words about Reagan, muddy the waters about his religion, smear him about his teenage drug use and then lay claim to his supporters. If she really wanted our votes she could have run an honest campaign that didn't depend on hit-and-run attacks by her out-of-control husband and a wholesale abandonment of truth.
Don't tell us to "grow up," shut up and vote for Hillary. You didn't earn our respect, so you haven't earned our support.
...everybody shut up and let people vote.
Once again for the millionth time I am asking anyone, anyone on this board to point to a state or collection of states that you reasonably think Hillary can take away from the GOP in 2008. Look at the electoral college map folks!
Remember how confident you were in 2004? Hey, there's no way GW could win right? With the war and the economy and his stupid tax cuts and the fact that John Kerry was a freakin war hero that served his country while GW served himself another line?
Um, except that GW did win didn't he?
Look, we live in a center-right country where in 1976 even after the republican president and vice-president resigned in disgrace, the dems STILL barely beat them and even then it was only for one term.
Bill Clinton was an anomaly who basically got lucky the first time because of Ross Perot and the second time because of well, Bob Dole. Sure, he was a great president but his popularity just never rubbed off on the democratic party.
So check your map. Assuming that the dems cede the South (AGAIN) they will end up in a fight over Ohio (AGAIN) and at the end of the day Obama has a slightly better chance than Hillary to pick up the republicans and independents that you are going to need to win that state AND to keep the GOP base turnout low.
Hillary would do the exact opposite (turn off independents and republicans and ensure that the base GOP base turns out in droves to loudly reject someone they clearly loathe)
And even with all that if the GOP is smart enough to nominate McCain (just to win basically) I am not sure either Obama or Clinton (but definitely not Clinton) will be able to beat him.
Oh and if you are thinking about 2006 and the fact that the dems took the congress, well yes they basically used up their one 'we are fed up with the republican's and we want someone else' chit and they have done absolutely NOTHING with it except for maybe setting themselves up to share the blame (fairly or unfairly) for our current economic situation.
The cold hard truth is that we are 3 for 10 since 1968 and that includes a GOP president who almost got impeached, a GOP president who wasn't even elected and a GOP president who basically lied to get us into a war and then gave all of our money to his rich friends.
I am not saying it's impossible but it is damn near unlikely. Our best hope is that we nominate Obama and an uber-conservative like Gary Bauer runs independently.
