On Martin Luther King Day, the Democrats have their nastiest debate yet as the Clinton and Obama spat gets personal.
  • a few thoughts

    1) Okay we get it, Shapiro got the order of the zingers wrong. But as was correctly pointed out earlier, Obama levelled the Walmart charge in his defense of the "You're a filthy Reaganite" charge. Then Hillary had her slumlord comment. Which again, is an odd tactic, considering how a large chunk of the electorate thinks that she and Bill killed a dude (bunk I know, but apparently people believe bunk)

    2) The most telling part of the debate was near the end when the candidates all spoke about their electability. Clinton and Edwards both essentially saying they can beat the Republicans on the electoral map as it currently stands. While Obama said what I think is the (pardon the Henley reference) heart of the matter. He's saying that he can redraw the map. And ya know what? I believe him.

I think essentially what this campaign boils down to are those that long for a return to the good old days (Bill Clinton in the White House - because let's be honest a large portion of those voting for Hillary are really voting for Bill. Not the people here, who are some of the most politically astute people I've come across) and those who long for a radical re-altering of the political map and politics in general. They seem to feel that if Nixon could forge a new Southern Strategy, then Obama can forge a United Strategy. A risky gambit, but one that is worth it (in my humble opinion).

    3) If either Obama or Edwards wins the nomination, the other will be the running mate - I'd bet my non-existent house on it.
