Beautiful Post
Thank you.

choice of words
"Edwards, whose rhetoric is normally perfectly coiffed..."
Coiffed? Usually used in describing hair, as in haircuts!
Good God, you people can never let up, can you?

Yeah, that jumped out at me too..
Cheap, cheap, cheap shot..

Perfectly coiffed
I agree with the previous commenter -- "coiffed" puts a cheap shot in an otherwise fine article.

The Clinton hatchet
work continues, this time creating the Edwards drop out story! So Salon is for Clinton. What else can I read? Because I despise this monstrous garbage. Walter & Joe & Joan would never go into a precinct and do dirty tricks, but they think nothing of warping a significant, international, progressive voice's presidential primary coverage before a single vote is cast. Curses!

I hate to tell Walter Shapiro,
but Edwards isn't going to drop out after tomorrow if he doesn't "win" Iowa, which he will get the most delegates. It's not a primary, after all.
I am going to be canvassing for him here in Reno on Saturday.

It's still an open race
We allowed one coronation to take place and what has that gotten us in the last 8 years: surplus gone, economy on the verge of teetering, high tech jobs going the way of all the "low tech jobs", thousands dead, constitution in tatters, ...
Do we want another coronation? Will we America as an ideal survive it?

Its All Of Our Day of Reckoning
It is not John Edwards day of reckoning, it is our country's day of reckoning. Do we want to have the kind of democracy that has a President who is principled and stand sup for every American? Or do we choose the glamourous President whose only policies are based on fear, or unifying us for the sake of unity not based on any principles.
It is a gut check for all of us. Will we pick a President who has campaigned on standing up to corporate interests? Or will we sit back and let the same old bad things happen to us over and over again.
In my gut I'm betting and hoping we choose Edwards, we choose the strongest path for all of us.
Si Se Puede..Iowa

The End for Edwards?
The tone I get from this article is that Edwards is in a life or death battle for his entire career in this race for the nomination. Just assuming that Edwards doesn't get the nomination of his party (which I don't think is fair to assume), what's to say that he couldn't run for NC governor in 2009, or for senate again in 2010 against Republican Richard Burr? Does a loss banish him from politics forever?
I don't think a loss here necessarily ends Edwards' political career at all, at least in the way that this Day of Reckoning headline implies.

Walter, Walter, Walter...
I mean really -- have you no decency? The "perfectly coiffed" commment was gratuitous at best. We all already know where you stand. Why not just recuse yourself from writing about anyone but Ms.Clinton? John Edwards is a good, decent man and to play him this way, to suggest he will fold if he doesn't take all the marbles in Iowa is just like yelling "Look! Your hair is on fire!" It's a big distraction, a manipulation, and it frankly feels rather desperate.
I'm still supporting Obama, but Edwards would be my very close second choice, and I won't be crushed (at all) if he should win the whole shooting match, Iowa be damned. Of course we all want our chosen candidate to take the first (and, strangely, the big) one, but this isn't gonna be the end of anything for anybody. It is just the damn starting gun!
Walter, this is getting old. Kindly declare your dedication and maybe join buddy on the campaign trail stumping for Hillary. It would be honest and I'm sure she'd appreciate it. Then again she undoubtedly appreciates your Huckabee-like sleight-of-hand here at Salon on her behalf.
But back to Edwards. He's already made his mark. He can only go up from here. He won't quit til the race is over. Nice try, bub.

Edwards
I have been driving around the Las Vegas area with his bumper sticker (Edwards '08) on my car here in Nevada for several months.
I am pleased to report that no one has tried to run me off the road; nor have they taken cheap shots at me so far. So if you're reading this, Mr. Edwards, I don't give a good goddamn how you do in Iowa. I want you here, speaking up for me and mine, in Las Vegas, NV.
I am utterly disillusioned at the state of affairs, such as it/they are/were.
With John Edwards, I really do feel a breath of fresh air. It does not hurt that I also happen to admire and feel some love towards his wife. Elizabeth, you are gorgeous.
Now, listen Walter S. (please if you will), get thee away from my candidate, ! No, SINCERELY, please.
Don't the republicans have folks who want your attention? As a roadie, can't you at least check out THEIR hor's de oveurves instead of ours?
Merci, and may the best "man" win.

Hillary/Edwards '08
that's what should happpen. If Edwards is serious about being a public servant he wouldn't let the fact that he failed at becoming President twice stand in the way of accepting a VP role. It's a ticket a lot of people would consider.

How very, very odd.
In an otherwise excellent article there is this one sour note that is supposed to evoke Edwards combing his hair or getting his hair styled? Why? Surely Shapiro is a saavy enough writer to understand that good writing has a consistency of tone. It is nearly impossible to believe that Shapiro has suddenly gone tone deaf.
Walter, I am ashamed of you!

Clinton Fatigue
Yeah, it's pretty desperate on the Clinton front lines. And Salon is HRC Central. My head spins each day, trying to figure out what Salon is/has become...One article is TMZ-ish, another is Cosmo-esque, now this one so obviously...well, National Enquirer-y.
-
God almighty . . .
That "coiffed" line is just too much.
When did Salon become the Politico? You guys -- but especially Walter Shapiro -- are shallower and sleazier than the worst of them.
PS: I saw Edwards at the Coralville Holiday Inn a few days ago and thought he was awesome. I'm caucusing for Obama, but Edwards (like Dodd) has earned my respect.
