Editorial or feature article?
'Ron Paul is a baby elephant?' 'Quixotic campaign'? (from the parallel 'interview' of Ron Paul). It's disappointing to see how hard it is for Salon writers to dig up facts (the research is a bit thin), or present them without the bias of their personal conclusions, or even worse, echoing the biases and conclusions of the main stream media or other politicos or journalists.
It's also sad to see what questions you decided to ask the man when you had an interview set up. Intriguing perhaps, but still skirting the meat of the matter. The interview is a better piece than this, but not much.

as much as I like Ron Paul....
i think he is a bit of a loony. I mean really I admire the guy's frankness on just about any topic, but especially the Iraq war. and I like his black and white answers to questions posed to him (but then again, wasn't that the whole problem with Dubya too?).
But really, I know a couple of guys who adhere to the same school of thought as Ron Paul, ie Austrian economics. These guys are truly radical, true right wing anarchists and they really hate any form of government. When I discuss Austrian economic theory with them, then I truly am scared at the way these guys think. and that is why I kinda fear Ron Paul. Notice how Ron Paul hasn't really given any substantive ideas on how exactly he would establish the gold standard. What about all those CIA people his lays off when he abolishes the CIA? what about their informants in far flung places like Afghanistan? what about poor people who depend on government for medical services? what about government standards that ensure we have clean drinking water and all that? how will we monitor those corporate buccanneers bent on raping this planet? I mean the thing that is scary about people who adhere to Austrian economics is that they think its ok for people to die and "suffer" during the transition stage to pure market functioning system, when everything will just correct itself and we shall live in pure bliss, at the mercy of a harmonius operating economic system. I mean there has never been a perfect goverment. Government is only as good as the person running it, be it Democrat or Republican or Independent. and this only means that Ron Paul isnt the solution to the problems we are facing right now.

This Government
This government is negotiating autonomously with other governments for a merger of their interests, but against the interests of those it is charged with serving. This government has collapsed into a single party system of ruling elites. This government ensures its continuation by making false economic promises to its people. This government has robbed the wealth of its people by devaluing their savings, taking their property, and obligating them to great debt. This government strips personal liberties from its people in order that they learn not to resist it. This government has moved from a force of peace for the world to be among its largest threats. This government is willing to topple other governments without any provocation or permission. This government is now one with the military industrial complex and is willing to kill the population to further its own interests. This government has the means to achieve a totalitarian state in our executive, judicial, and legislative branches.
I would rather not have awakened.

Misc...
Just reading through the comments and want to cover a few points:
Those free trade agreements are not real free trade. They are managed trade and favored trade. Real free trade doesn't require an agreement, it doesn't require an enforcement body, it doesn't require unaccountable bureaucracies. Ron Paul is for real free trade, not the bait and switch we got, which is government sponsored incentive to close factories in the US and open replacements in other nations.
Regarding those fearing a decline into dictatorship: The two major parties have been following that textbook of how to turn a republic into a dictatorship for decades and shrub has turned on the hyperdrive in the last few years. Ron Paul is probably our best shot and derailing this run-away freight train to tyranny.
On Austrian economics, yes there are radicals in every crowd. The keyensian (sp?) radicals exist too. Beyond that, parental, protective government is not freedom.
What scares me is when I learn (often by their own publications) what groups like the CFR want for the US and seeing much of it getting implemented step by step (Security and Prosperity Partnership) These things, like the stuff Robert Pastor and David Rockefeller write is where Hillary and Rudy will take the US. That to me is very scary. A radical of the libertarian austrian economics kind, even with some of their unworkable ideas isn't going to force me to do anything. I don't find that to be a scary world. Someone like Ron Paul, who is very sensible and understands how things need to be done in the real world and make gentle transitions is what we need before the current system goes beyond a tipping point and we get sudden and catastrophic change if we want it or not.
And lastly, the constitution was designed to protect us from the concept of a government being only as good as the people running it. The flaw in not following the constitution is that we are now subject to the whims of those in office. Why do you think the US Constitution has been essentially put aside by those in elected office? It was in the way of their power.

Ron Paul
We're 9 trillion in debt.
We've spent 450 billion +- in Iraq
I'm for the United States of America!
How big of a federal government do we need?
Are you affected by increasing prices on most of your
needed items? If you notice, that's inflation, which
means your dollars buy less.
The comments above regarding Austrian economics and
folks like Paul hating government are false!
Ron Paul has given service to the US in the military and
the House of Representatives. His knowledge of our economic
system is immense!
Does our country being more like Switzerland upset you?
Then sound money, peace, prosperity and not messing with
other countries affairs while having a strong national
defense must also upset you.
We have 65,000 troops in Germany. 30,000 in Japan, 30,000
in Korea. This has went on for over 50 years. These countries
are properous and can defend themselves. We have over 700
military bases around the globe. Who said we should be the
world's policeman? They say on TV these foreign governments
hate us, but as a rule, almost all come running to old Uncle
Sam anytime there is a catastrophe! Or, they back door us
through the United Nations.
Think about this-the greatest country ever on the face of
the earth and we've been 'struggling' in Iraq for years now.
No Bin Laden. Do you sense something is not right? 70% of
Americans want us out.
Properity, limited government, potential peace.
I'm supporting Ron Paul. ronpaul2008.com dailypaul.com
