The World's Greatest Photo Illustration
The news photo used at the top of this story (photo credit AP/Chris O'Meara) looks almost exactly like a classic Jack Kirby drawing of "Mr. Fantastic" Reed Richards doing battle with the "The Puppet Master" Phillip Masters. Uncanny!

Kerik taught Rudy how to defend himself
On the gun question, Rudy said he didn't own one. Why? His business partner and former police commissioner, Bernie Kerik, taught him how to take care of himself with a ball peen hammer and an icepick.

Harder all the time to take Salon seriously
Yet another flippant article on the presidential race from Salon. Yes, there is a need for comic relief from the ridiculous quality of SOME of the candidates, especially on the Republican side. But when almost all the presidential campaign articles on Salon have this same tone, it's like eating dessert all the time with no main meal. Where's the beef -- the thoughtful, careful analysis?
There are a number of candidates who from their character, their history of sincere work in the public interest, and their campaign platforms, merit a closer look: Paul, Kucinich, Richardson, and perhaps others. These guys stand out from the media-picked, stay the course, corporate-backed 'leading' candidacies of Clinton, Obama, Giuliani and the like. I wouldn't know that from reading Salon. All I get is recycled MSM spin, gossip and lazy libelous labeling, to wit, yet more of the UFO crap about Kucinich, or the painting of Paul as a conspiracy theorist.
There is an unmet need in the media as a whole for some serious political research and writing -- on a topic that concerns whether the country will continue to slide into an authoritarian abyss -- and Salon isn't filling it. Instead, it's cynical spin. The message Salon is sending, between the lines, is: don't bother, there's nobody here worth spending your time on. The sad thing is, that's not true.
So why does Salon choose to do nothing better than mirror the bias and malignant neglect of the MSM? With your fine attention to the nitty gritty of Washington politics (Greenwald, Conason, Blumenthal, et al), why can't you do the same here? Speaking from what I know (and you're not helping on that count), Kucinich is running a progressive campaign based on what most Americans want, the core values of the Democratic party from the decades before it went corporate and began its slide to the right. There's a story for you.
Flipping back and forth between the articles and letters posted here and what's currently on the Common Dreams and TruthOut websites makes for a clear contrast. The substantive discourse on this subject is happening elsewhere.
All I can say is, Salon founding editor David Talbot must rue the day he let go the reins of the magazine. Every week it turns more and more towards silly tabloid journalism.

This Debate Was Off The Hook!
I have watched nearly all debates by both parties and this one took the cake without question. Mild props to CNN for some of their sneaky moves but I think it was simply time for the knockdowns to commence and, frankly, the Republicans have more salient and painful fissures than do the Dems by large margin! I relished the skirmishes over immigration (even if they're fruitless), torture (praise be to McCain for actually sticking it to these macho goons), and the War (once again Ron Paul articulates his Constitutional position well.) To get the gay Brigadier General snuck in there was pure genius though the question should have gone to Giuiliani or McCain who might have indicated an openness to open service at some point. And, of course, the plain evidence that Ron Paul is kicking arse is that he got at least two rebuttal responses because the mainstream fools are compelled to kick him down over sensible foreign policy. He needed to spend just a little more time educating McCain, for the nth time, about how Saddam <> Hitler.

CNN Republican Debate
Why did no one in the median mention the fact that the question asked regarding paying back the Social Security fund was not properly addressed? This fund has been raided over and over again and the money does not belong to the federal government in any way, shape or form. And this is not an entitlement - it has been paid for since day one by employees and employers

I wish Paul had pointed out to McCain....
that had we not involved ourselfs in WWI there probably would not have been a WWII, and Hilter would probably never have come to power.

I agree with Nonpartisan Truthseeker
I too am craving some real analysis of the candidates and their positions. Where am I to look to find this? I think Salon would be an obvious choice, but most of the candidate articles are heavy on the marshmallow fluff. Dessert for every meal, indeed. The articles many of us are craving are likely to be LONG and maybe even BORING for a few people, but most of us can handle it and are looking for it. Just look at the huge response Glenn Greenwald gets for his in-depth, insightful, and dense analysis every day. It is a real treasure. How about a new policy: "If you don't eat your meat, you can't have any pudding. How can you have any pudding if you don't eat your meat?"

good article
I think this is a very good article. I was watching the bozos too, last night, and they did, in fact, become more human to me. I like Huckabee and Ron Paul, because they seem to be more interested in principle than in playing the power game, which I find to be really deadly and sinister. But I, as usual, could be wrong.

"If we look for it, you'll realize that our national sovereignty is under threat." Indeed.
Actually, Paul doesn't seem so far off the mark. Let's not forget NAFTA's Chapter Eleven, which protects "investor's rights" and allows multinationals to sue localities that pass laws which dampen their profits.
The trials are not held in an American court or in another elected body, but in a confidential tribunal.
Bill Moyers, not one for conspiracy theories, was concerned enough to devote time to discussing this treaty:

I appreciate Salon, but rather wish that we would not fall into the Beltway's casual ad hominems.
