pandering to the special interests.....
thompson's answer makes him sound like he has taken on the message and the paranoia of one of those hard core gun guys. he won't tell you where he keeps his guns because you might go and steal them. besides if he were to admit they're locked up "in the house", then you can attack him "on the street" without worrying that he is armed.
it's the same paranoia that makes hardcore gun guys argue that gun regulations, like checking for a criminal record before one buys a gun, will eventually lead to our government coming to every Americans' home and seizing their weapons.
it's really goofy. one guy tries to light his shoe on a plane and now we are all walking barefoot through airport security. where is the balance and middle ground in this country?
politicians are falling all over themselves to prove they can save Americans from terrorism, but they are too scared to take on the gun lobby and make it harder for the mentally ill and criminals to get guns. and the latest gun lobby spin argues that the best solution is arming the public.

Here's some real questions
Do you know what a CDO is? An SIV, ABS, etc??
(hint: I'll bet Bush couldn't tell you)
We got rid of a terrible budget deficit once before? Did we learn anything about the process. Or is this like Global Warming, just part of some cycle and process we don't really understand, and we shouldn't worry about it? Did I mention the dollar?
Do you remember the phrase, "Don't worry, be happy." Congratulations, you are a Reagan era Republican. While all of you talk about Reagan's accomplishments, none of you seem to accept his primary message, you all seem to be saying, "Worry, worry, worry.." Are you we going to have to wait another four years before we can be happy again?
People are losing trust in the vital infrastructure which supports and protects them, even while we are spread across the world, catching terrorists, we can't trust the toys we buy, the food we eat, the elected officials who are supposed to protect us. Which one of you is going to "Insure the Domestic Tranquility," and how are you going to do it?
For Sen McCain: The enemy tortured you once. It didn't work. Why should we use torture? Doesn't it strengthen the enemies resolve, did it strengthen yours?
For Rep Paul: YOu want to take us back to the Constitutional Garden of Eden. What is your view of the Constitution Amendments since the Civil War?
For Mr Romney: How does your religion guide your political vision?
For Mr Guiliani: Have you considered a make over? The Democrats have young and attractive people running for office? Would you consider changing your looks to appear more likable? Do you think Nixon made a mistake in the 1960 debate. Most people do. What would you consider doing? Botox, hair plants, etc?

The GOP countdown....errrr....meltdown
Reading about this Gang of Eight at their debates, makes me think that the eventual GOP nominee has not walked on stage yet. GOP voters are vacillating to the point where they've lost their equilibrium, they are off-course, lost, lacking in conviction, in disarray.
I wish the You, as in We the People, actually had some clout in picking presidential candidates, rather than leaving it up to a few corn farmers in the hinterlands to set the course.
Oh, please, please, please! Don't settle on any one candidate ALL through the primaries!

unity?
i think i heard mitt romney (who i thought came off as a disingenuous snake last night) say something to the effect of "we're one america. one country, united. there are not two americas." well if that's the case, i'm puzzled as to why the gop race is a contest to see which candidate is the most hardcore conservative?
i know all about playing to your audience, but these guys are frightening. has nobody told them that there is an entire half of the country that thinks their ideas are ludicrous? the last thing america wants or needs right now is 4 more years of the vicious red state/blue state divisiveness that is destroying us from the inside out. we have real issues on foreign policy, our economy, education, government power, violent crime, etc. - none of these things have anything to do with god or gays, yet those are the topics that keep coming up.
some of the democrats get this (like obama), but none of the republicans do, save perhaps ron paul.
and aside from the fact that nobody can substantiate whether the gay general was a hillary plant, what's the difference anyway? was it not a perfectly valid question? accusing the general of being a hillary plant is classic gop politics: when your viewpoints make you look stupid, ignorant, and bigoted, change the topic.

Republican Debate
The debate system is so skewed to the front runners that, for the “sheep like followers” that represent a majority of voters, the media decides on who is worth even considering. The one Republican candidate that is truly different from the rest is Ron Paul and he gets minimal opportunity to participate. He is the only real conservative up there with a undeniable record of fiscal responsibility and honesty regardless of the political fallout. It is absolutely amazing how pro Iraq the Republican candidates are (except Paul) knowing that issue alone is going to sink them in the general election. The country is not going to overlook a candidate that is committed to 8 more years of Iraq. The Republican party needs to truly redefine what conservatism is (smaller federal gov, much less federal spending and greater protection of rights with less intervention abroad) as this has been completely overlooked in favor of their stand on abortion.

"Ron Paul's Conspiracy Theories" headline is misleading
I read this article because of the breathless SALON headline: Ron Paul's conspiracy theories!"
What I found was a grotesque misrepresentation of what Paul actually said.
Here is the entire Q&A from the debate. Agree or disagree with Paul, his answer hardly seems to be some kind of half-baked "conspiracy theory." Indeed, as Paul says, "It's not a conspiracy."
* * * * * * * * * *
YOU TUBE QUESTION: Good evening, candidates. This is (inaudible) from Arlington, Texas, and this question is for Ron Paul.
I've met a lot of your supporters online, but I've noticed that a good number of them seem to buy into this conspiracy theory regarding the Council of Foreign Relations, and some plan to make a North American union by merging the United States with Canada and Mexico.
These supporters of yours seem to think that you also believe in this theory. So my question to you is: Do you really believe in all this, or are people just putting words in your mouth?
RON PAUL: Well, it all depends on what you mean by "all of this." the CFR exists, the Trilateral Commission exists. And it's a, quote, "conspiracy of ideas." This is an ideological battle. Some people believe in globalism. Others of us believe in national sovereignty.
And there is a move on toward a North American union, just like early on there was a move on for a European Union, and it eventually ended up.
And there is a move on toward a North American Union, just like early on there was a move on for a European Union, and eventually ended up. So we had NAFTA and moving toward a NAFTA highway. These are real things. It's not somebody made these up. It's not a conspiracy. They don't talk about it, and they might not admit about it, but there's been money spent on it. There was legislation passed in the Texas legislature unanimously to put a halt on it. They're planning on millions of acres taken by eminent domain for an international highway from Mexico to Canada, which is going to make the immigration problem that much worse.
So it's not so much a secretive conspiracy, it's a contest between ideologies, whether we believe in our institutions here, our national sovereignty, our Constitution, or are we going to further move into the direction of international government, more U.N.
You know, this country goes to war under U.N. resolutions. I don't like big government in Washington, so I don't like this trend toward international government. We have a WTO that wants to control our drug industry, our nutritional products. So, I'm against all that.
But it's not so much as a sinister conspiracy. It's just knowledge is out there. If we look for it, you'll realize that our national sovereignty is under threat.
