  • You left out the money quote...

    "40 minutes:

McCain . . . turns on Paul, who is polling near double digits in New Hampshire . . . McCain says. "And I want to tell you that that kind of isolationism, sir, is what caused World War II." . . . Paul responds by explaining that non-intervention is not the same as isolationism."

What Paul actually responded with verbatum was the zinger of the evening,

"The real question you have to ask is why do I get the most (campaign) money from active-duty officers and military personnel?"

McCain is on higher moral ground than the rest of the GOPs in my humble opinion, but Paul really "nailed" him here.

I think that explains the "polling near double digits"; McCain's only hope of doing so would be to siphon off the votes from Paul. Since he's not as bloodthirsty as the rest of his colleagues (and many American voters), that's his best hope of staying relevant.

Silly me, I can see both of their points.

  • Kotonchiic you asked why

Ron Paul's conspiracy theories should be regarded as less plausible than those put out by our current government at the Federal, state and local level.

Well, there are some theories floating around out there that are tough to top. But the question was about whether Ron Paul believed that there is a secret plan to merge this nation with Canada and Mexico.

From the article is seems that Ron Paul's response to the question was ambiguous, so he may not believe in such a plan. I don't know whether anyone has a plan but I can assure you that no such merger is going to occur.

As an American who lived in Canada for a total of nine years I can confidently state that there is no way on this earth that the Canadians would agree to any sort of merger with our country. Canada is extremely protective of its sovereignty. Even if the Canadian government could be persuaded to go along with such a plan (and it could not) it is not structured in a way that would permit it to do something so violently opposed by the Canadian people.

Worrying about a secret plan to merge the U.S. and Canada is like worrying about a secret plan to turn lead into gold. The plan can never be put into action so it isn't worth worrying about.

  • @serenia

You're right, the US has no reason to worry, but how about the Canadians? What with the South of the US drying up already and global warming projected to drive people Northwards. Here's betting that fifty years from now, Canada will have been invaded on some pretext (WMDs or support of terrorism or just good old Lebensraum).

And thank you Michael for an enjoyable read.

  • Chuck Norris

If it weren't for Chuck, I could easily believe this debate was a sad and twisted sketch comedy, played by the finest impersonators to mock the American political process and make laughingstocks of all these candidates to the world. We can thank Baby Jesus though that Chuck was there as a stabilizing force. He's the man who pinches you, or perhaps body slams you, to let you know that you are not dreaming - that these are indeed the men who in one way or another are shaping our future. As Chuck sat gazing steadily, our souls were calmed for a moment. Who knows what disciplined, righteous thoughts he must have been thinking. America is behind you all the way Chuck. You are our light through this sick and depraved era, and whatever person you befriend, shall become a friend to us as well, at least until such time as we are wooed by another politically savvy or sexy celebrity.

    Thank you Chuck.

  • CNN vs. YouTube

This debate reminded me just how much I dislike arrogant ideological old men and just how generic CNN is.

    Really Coop!?

  • great hit on Ron Paul

    Great slime job!

You changed the wording so as attack Dr. Paul in the sort of manner that Glenn Greenwald decried in a post a few weeks ago. Good for you. We would hate to see freedom break out or the US Constitution honored by politicians, eh?

Besides, who does not look forward to "one ring to rule them all"?

  • To thingswesaid

I supported the abortion question but was very dissappointed that it was asked of only 2 Candidates and not even the front runners. Oh, by the way, I am not a John Edwards afficionado but I do want to know from these candidates just how far they think 'criminalization of abortion against women' should go.

  • Massachusetts Gun Laws

Romney says, "I have two guns in my home. They are owned by my son Josh. He buys expensive things for me."

The gun control laws in Massachusetts are very specific. If Romney has guns in his house they need to be registered. Anybody feel like doing a little investigating?

Oddly enough, it's on my mind because I've been visiting in Canada recently, and I've heard various people articulate your reaction, and I've also heard (local) conspiracy theorists explain to me that the plan for a North American Union is already set in stone and will soon be put into effect.

I certainly don't have any inside knowledge but Ron Paul would probably point out that the Constitution of the United States requireds that only Congress can declare war, and the last war ever declared was WWII, but the US has been in HOW many wars since then? (Point being---you may have an ABSOLUTE RIGHT to a Plebescite vote in Canada---but whether you'll get to exercise that right or not is a totally separate question).

I will also tell you that I buttonholed the local Federal MP after Remembrance Day Services two weeks ago and her reaction to my asking her about it was extreme nervousness and to stammer about security agreements "but we don't really know what the government does on the other side of the aisle, you know....they just don't keep us posted on everything."

So I don't know---the whole thing about the culture of deceit, the culture of lies and lawlessness that permeates the United States government at the present time is that excuses for avoiding the law abound, and explanations of why the moon is made of green cheese DURING such eclipses as are convenient to maintain that fiction only---are abundant one minute and denounced as enemy fabrications the next.

Our (US) Government has gotten to the point where there is simply no lie too trivial to be backed up with the "full-faith and credit" of that same U.S. Government, or too mammoth in scope to be allowed to collapse of its own fictitious weight.

Wars start over lies. The Constitution is eroded because of lies. National Boundaries may be dissolved without anyone noticing....even as walls are being built along those boundaries....by manipulation and lies.

Only time will tell, but let's face it---"The Matrix" was not science fiction---it was POLITICAL REALITY.....
