  • Again; 'follow the money'.

There is similar documentation online concerning the Southwest; specifically, Lake Mead outside of Las Vegas. The Colorado River is it's source.

Four states; Nevada, Arizona, California and Colorado depend on the water from the Colorado River. The so-called "water wars" have been going on for decades, but have reached the point of ruthless back-stabbing, secret deals, payoffs, and now state-against-state court litigation.

The outright theft of water is a daily occurrence. It's been discovered by hired hydrologists that landowners whose wells were suddenly drying up were victims of parallel then sideways drilling into their water source.

There's not a ruse that hasn't been tried. Beautiful ranches in outlying counties are being bought up by water companies hundreds of miles away. The land is left to go fallow, buildings rot to the ground; but, by hokey!, their water is piped out to the other county!

Some large landowners have sold their soul to the devil by accepting a cash deal for the mineral and water rights on the land on which they continue to live!

    Water is the next oil.

  • Breakdown of the 5 stages of climate change.

Here's an understandable description of expected changes as the world heats up from 1 through 5 degrees:

    http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/science/article1480669.ece (TimesOnline UK).

It's interesting to see that we can avoid a 2° increase is avoidable, but beyond that, it's likely a runaway process.

  • You Contradict Yourself Awesome-O

Wasn't the whole premise of your original post that non-breeders simply weren't attractive enough to attract a mate and breed with?

I was simply pointing out that lots of folks are much hotter than you are and choose not to breed.

Stop whining and twisting yourself in circles to justify your selfishness and egoism. There is nothing innately enobling about having children on an overpopulated planet.

Get over yourself and stop trying to rationalize your selfishness and egotism.

  • resourse (water) consumption

won't be achieved by stopping breeders because the urge to breed is wired too far down in our genome and not influenced by rational thought. the other solution (short of genocide) is eliminating all medical care for anyone over 40 to 50. actual age of cutoff would depend on the number of kid they had. more kids means younger cut off of medical care. this plan would reduce the average age of our population and associated resource consumption. there is no need to directly kill anyone, let nature take it's course. added plus would be if the over aged catch anything contagious, they can spread it to their communities further reducing the population.

another trick for population reduction is elimination of public health programs like clean water, disease tracking, and board of health functions.

a longer term trick is further raising the status of women as experience shows that the more real power women have, the fewer children they have.

as for growing your own food, assume 2 acres per person per year if you kill all varmints like raccoons, groundhogs, deer and turn other competitors for your food into your food.

  • How it will play out

I think I know how the US will try to get control of an ample supply of fresh water. It will begin with someone saying things like: "Brazil has weapons of mass destrucion", "Brazil abets terrorists" and so on.

  • speaking of contradictions

    BabyGrumpus, earlier you wrote:

    "What's Wrong With Genocide Anyway?

Too many people on the planet and not enough resources. The solution is obvious. Get over it you crybabies. Your reverence for human life is a quaint, outdated conceit that our species can no longer afford."

Someone who advocates genocide is in no position to complain about the arrogance of breeders. So quit rationalizing, get over your selfish attachment to your own life which is worth no more than the life of a bacterium, and be the first to volunteer to sacrifice yourself for a greater cause!

  • not really

Wasn't the whole premise of your original post that non-breeders simply weren't attractive enough to attract a mate and breed with?

noooo... not really, BabyGrumpus aka gay anon. You need some reading comprehension skills. I said you were probably in denial about it being your "choice" because it is too painful to admit that your mate finds you defective somehow. (See, I even gave you the benefit of the doubt and assumed you HAVE a mate.) By the way there is inner ugliness as well as outer, something I'm sure you have never considered (but you should probably start).

I was simply pointing out that lots of folks are much hotter than you are and choose not to breed.

mm-hmm, because you know how hot I am from 2 posts on Salon.

Stop whining and twisting yourself in circles to justify your selfishness and egoism. There is nothing innately enobling about having children on an overpopulated planet.

I don't think I said it was "enobling." I said it was the most awesome profound experience a person can have. Why do you think you keep hearing this? It must really piss you off. Imagine- there might be something more to life than that hot body in the mirror and the fuck of the week.

Get over yourself and stop trying to rationalize your selfishness and egotism.

you're repeating yourself. Maybe you should stop and listen.

  • bryson k

    thanks for a useful post.

Bush and the republicans do have a plan for Atlanta if the water runs out during his term-he will blame Bill Clinton.

  • Leave now

People reading this are ahead of their neighbors, and should use that to their benefit. If you live in a drought affected part of the country, sell your house to someone who isn't reading this and move to a part of the country where there will be water. If you live in a good area and are asked to move to a bad area, refuse. This is your big chance to show your forethought and protect your family and your heirs at the expense of the less aware. Natural selection will work for you and your genes.

  • what then?

    How about:

    1) turning off all the lights in Las Vegas- and all of the slots and the lighting for all the strippers and money pimps.

2)Undamming Lake Powell. Releasing all the water from the Colorado River (the most dammed river on earth).

Closing Pheonix and Tempe, Az to new developments that are water unsustainable.

3)Ditto at Hetch Hetchy, Cal- Let San Francisco feel what everyone will eventually feel- and bring back the best part of Yosemite in the process

4)Make the whole Southland (Cal) Empire deal with Desal-only water- drain those pools, darken those districts, grey-up all that lawn- especially the obcene golf paradises around Palm Springs.

5)Park all those ridiculous automobiles, close the damned free ride for the automotive industries, especially the highway lobby and its whores, the electeds, in D.C. and Sacramento and other Capitals- make those bastards all sign pledges or else cut off their jobs and the rest of their game.

    6) (I'll just stop with this one, there are more... ) End the madconsumer culture, and fast!

In short, start heeding old forgotten Malthus' dire Jeramiahizing.

    SUSTAINABILITY and nothing short.

The planet needs a new life style.

The one we've been sold does not work.
