  • So What?

Why are news sources not as entitled to political preferences as any citizen or other group which makes endorsements? Why not encourage them to be above board about their allegiances?

Historically our newspapers have always made election endorsements and no one thought twice about it. This business of expecting neutrality from them and their successors in new media when it's election time is a very, very new idea and it seems inherently designed to encourage hypocrisy.

We've got right and left wing media outlets. They're run by people with political allegiances. They are businesses which have business relationships with politicians and power groups.

Maybe it's time to step back, be a bit realistic and stop expecting unrealistically even impossibly high standards of neutrality from the media. Know them for what they are and the faults and biases which they so obviously have, and watch or read the ones you like and take them no more seriously than they deserve.

So long as they continue to get the basic facts in straight news reporting correct, their perspective and their political alignment ought not to be an issue for contention.

    Dave

Shut up. You don't speak for everyone who visits Salon.

  • Portlander

Your drive buy cut and paste smear job is pretty retarded. All anyone needs to do is read one of your letters and they've read them all.

    Find a different tune.

  • GOUL-LEANI AND THE FOX HOLE

You know the saying the Fox cant smell his own hole..... I would say "Rudy baby and the

Fox-trotters" are farting and tap dancing to their "Bull-s--t" rap, and they are counting

on the American People to buy their records. If "Rudy baby and the Fox-trotters" get

the PRIZE of the white house in 08 then we shall see a totalitarian government that will make

the Mafia look like "Mary Poppins" but than again we are a very youthful Country.... so

we just may have another lesson coming our way.....

  • You missed some of the most obvious scandals!

    1.

Duh... who was invited to Rudy's THIRD wedding at Gracie Mansion?

A guy named Rupert Murdoch. (Drug addict Rush Limbaugh was also CURIOUSLY invited.Hmm!)

    HOW is that not relevant?

It's like when Kerik said the (mobster) best man at his wedding wasn't a close pal!

    2.

As Mayor, Rudy gave Rupert over $800,000,000 (million) in kickbacks, er, corporate welfare, er, "economic development" even though the NYPost never threatened to leave town.

Would YOU Lie for 800 million?

Now, WHY doesn't the NYTimes or Time Warner have to DISCLOSE the billions Rudy gave to all the media companies with monies stolen from NYC taxpayers against their wishes?

    Come on, Salon.

Surely you guys can do better than this.

Likewise, WHY aren't you on the cutting edge of pointing out that Rudy already belongs in PRISON---nevermind the campaign?

EX: Rudy has been found guilty of violating the Constitution and many state / city laws by hundreds of judges and juries (including the Supreme Court!).

    WHY ISN'T HE IN PRISON?

Ask his campaign to explain why Rudy broke the law so often and why "Super lawyer" Rudy lost more cases than any other lawyer in history?

Ask Rudy if he thinks there should be ANY punishment when you're found guilty of violating the highest law of the land---a law you SWORE on a bible to uphold twice during your mayoral inaugurations.

  • not possible

Oh come on! That couldn't possibly be true: the Arch Righty Murdoch and the Unspeakable Righty Giuliani conspiring to steal the Presidency (again). I'm shocked. This has spun my world.

  • Thanks to Fox

It is truly wonderful that Fox is not endorsing Ron Paul. Maybe this will give him more of a chance! I relish each new Hannity and Beck snide remark, knowing that it gives Paul more credibility with many Americans.

  • Shock and awe

If Il Duce Rudee manages to get the Rethug nomination, and I think he will, it won't matter who the Dim-Dems nominate. He will win. If he isn't stopped now, he will be the next president-dictaktor of the land of the credulous, and home of the scared. This is serious.

  • Fox News = Guiliani support = Israel support

    Title says it all.

Rupert Murdoch is a hate mongerer.

  • Modus operandi

If it's true that Rudi tried to by-pass the mayoral elections after 911, that sounds like what Musharaf just pulled off in Pakistan, and what many of us are afraid that GW may try to do before January '09.

Shifting legal justifications for a personal agenda; that sounds like common Bush policy. (torture, pre-emptive war, presidential war power, domestic spying, habeus corpus...)

Pressuring Judith Regan to lie to federal investigators, and trying to discredit her; sounds similar to the Valerie Plame outing (at least the discrediting, and sensoring of her book).

I have long suspected that there is a tight group of ultra rich, ultra powerful people whose sole purpose is to hold on to wealth and power. We are once again aproaching a non-election. Last time we were offered Bush and Kerry. Two men from the same university and secret fraternal society. This year the slicky stuff that's rising to the top all promise to follow the pre established agenda. Even Hillary does not promise any kind of change that would not be impossible to implement. If she becomes president, introduces impotent legilation, and it is rejected by congress, she still looks good because she didn't break her promise if she can blame it on congress. The front runners of both parties promise 4 more years of the same thing we've had for the last 8. We would be far better off with someone from outside the circle of power. Change is Good. Change is Good. Just keep saying that. Change is Good.
