But...
The LDS are a cult...

is wrong about everything-- except Mormonism. And you smirky secular liberals at Salon, who think all Christians hopelessly messed up and deserving of "our" "internecine feuds" do not get it, and it is extremely to your intellectual and moral discredit that you do not. Romney and the rest can believe anything they wish, but they do not get to call this Christianity. Catholics, Orthodox, Anglicans, Presbyterians, Congregationalists, Lutherans, Methodists, Anabaptists, Baptists, Pentecostals, etc.-- even 7th Day Adventists and Jehovah's Witnesses (gulp) are Christians. Mormons are so extremely heterodox they are not.
Note, I do not want to limit Mormon's rights in any way. But I want EVERY intelligent person who comes to this, and millions will in the next five months, to have information to reach the unmistakable conclusion. Mormonism is not Christianity, and the only reason a Mormon would say so is a deliberate conflation for an evangelical or political purpose.
It is time you journalists got on this, and for once in your careers do us a favor and get it right.

I'm a values voter
You probably are as well. Let's put a stop to this absurd political ownership of 'values' by fundamentalists.
I value gay marriage, abortion rights, the rule of law, checks and balances, civil liberties, liberty, privacy, science based policy, minimization of religion in public life, cultural liberalization of sexuality, and a half dozen other things they fundamentally despise.
My positions are not accidents, they are not perversions, they are quite literally articles of faith and values for me. They define large swaths of my character.
They are my values. And I vote.

What are Republicans to do?
So the Republican choices have come down to a Satanist, a thrice married, free-choicer and, God forbid, a Hollywood actor!
Looks like the only real choice for Conservative Christian Republicans is to vote Democrat.
-
Don't worry
I'm sure Mitt Romney will have an epiphany soon and join a southern babtist church.
-
Nit picking
I don't want anyone to vote for Mitt Romney, but not because he is a Mormon. It's interesting that many religions which have really small differences feud the loudest with each other. I'd bet these conservative evangelicals would have less problem with a Jewish president than a Mormon president.
-
Mormon is not Christian?
I will plead ignorance here, but would someone please (try) to explain to me why a religion that believes in Jesus as a savior and God as does the Mormon religion is somehow not a Christian religion. I truly do not get it.
-
Who doesn't think
that, if his Mormon faith conflicts with his ambition, Romney won't drop Mormonism like a used condom?

Hate and "American" Values
Since when did hatred and exclusionism become American values? The last time I looked at the constitution Christianity had nothing to do with being an American. Its time the Republicans started dealing with the big problems facing the U.S. instead of trying to decide which sanctimonious blowhard has the right way to celebrate his relationship with the universe. Children without healthcare, starving, the highest infant mortality rate in the first world are much more important to us than who has the appropriate dance to get into heaven.
The values spewed by the religious right aren't the values that have made America great, and they aren't the values that we need to progress into the twenty-first century. Is abortion a problem, sure it is. Maybe if you cared as much about those children already here the need for abortion would be less. Education is important spend some of the money on that rather than building lavish temples to the prophets.
Hatred and intolerance got us into a war that is tearing the U.S. apart. We're broke, morally and financially, our socalled Christian president promotes torture that 60 years ago we hung Japanese officers as war criminals for promoting. Get off your religious high horses and start looking at the things we need to do as Americans to be worthy of being leaders
A pox on all of you.

"Mormonism is not Christianity, and the only reason a Mormon would say so is a deliberate conflation for an evangelical or political purpose."
How true.
Around 1973, I interviewed a Mormon bishop who flat told me that LDS is not a Christian religion. Of course they believe in Jesus. But they believe that Jesus and Joseph Smith and many other religious leaders are equally prophets. They are not really Trinitarians (father, son, and holy ghost) but polytheistic.
This particular Mormon bishop disagreed with the then current trend in the Mormon church of minimizing these differences in order to achieve the mission of converting souls to the LDS faith. Since then, there are no doubt many Mormons converted with the misunderstanding that the Mormon church is like the Christian Church that they grew up in. Folks, those little missionary fellas don't tell you the truth when they come to the door. They tell you that all will be revealed after baptism into the faith. It is like a dance of veils. People converted and baptised without fully understanding what they are agreeing to.
That is part of where the Christian hostility comes from. Those Mormon men are experts at two things, sales and leadership. I was briefly a Mormon. I lived among Mormons. I was also once a Baptist. Mormons are as unlike Baptists as pomegrantes are unlike apples.
Shhh. Don't tell anyone, but when Mormons in good standing die they get their own planets where they get to be gods -- polytheism. Yes, just like Kucinich, Mormons are a little spacey. They don't think they see UFOs. Instead, they think that they are going to get to be rulers of different planets in the universe, with their wives cranking out soul children.
I have come to the conclusion reading Salon that not only are there people here who don't know what a Mormon is; they don't know what a Christian is either. A Christian believes that Jesus is the only son of god. He is not on par with prophets. He is above them. He is as God.

Somebody with the exact same name as you posted the exact same letter. Weird.

This is great!
Guiliani kills inocent babies. Romney's in league with Satan. I'm all for it! Two down and two to go. Let's help the fundies work on McCain and Thompson! Godless Hollywood ought to do it. And can some of those screenwriters get Thompson's character to get caught in a men's room with a congressional page?
