To me the intriguing thing is that so many self-identified progressives who eat meat seem so obsessed with this issue. Salon has run at least three apologias for carnivores in the last couple of weeks. As someone who stopped eating meat at least 10 years ago and never looked back, I don't find the subject very interesting, because there's really very little to talk about.
Subsistence cultures aside, I know of no credible argument in support of eating animal products. Sure, they bring pleasure to the eater; but my pleasure is no excuse for inflicting pain on another being. Having been around this track dozens of times with some very bright carnivores, many of them dear friends, I see very little to debate about, and even less to gain from the attempt, unless one enjoys witnessing the contortions of good minds in denial.
So I say again -- that shrieking sound you hear is the air rushing out of a pricked conscience.
