Paul missed the Congressional Field Trip to Israel
I guess Ron Paul missed the Congressional Field Trip to Israel in August. The US Constitution must not have signed his permission slip. He must have spent that time talking with that pesky Vanunu to come to the silly conclusions that he has. Israel has nukes? No way! Since when?!
You know, the one that all the Dems made sure to be a part of. AIPAC funds upwards of 60% of the Democratic campaigns and 35% of the Republican campaigns, but wait, that's right, the two parties are different.... Tell that to AIPAC, it helped the neocons get their war in Iraq, and now it is the neocon's turn to help the AIPAC get it war on Iran. The propaganda blitz has already begun in earnest this week, was "right on track" during the debate, and Paul is the only one with a TV presence attempting to throw a wrench in the system.

Yes, I would certainly waterboard
And by "I" I mean I would get some green kids out of the heartland to do it in the guise of following orders. Then I would deny it even happened, then I would court-martial the bad apples who did it and send them off to prison where they won't be waterboarded, because we don't do that sort of thing in these here United States, the greatest and most moral country in the world.
Really, thanks for watching. I was sickened by just the few sound bites you quoted. What has happened to my country, that this pack of morons are even allowed on stage as serious candidates?

Glad I watched Rescue Me...
even though rescue me isn't what it's been in past seasons, it was a much better choice than the debate. whenever I flipped over to fox news I just got really annoyed at what was being said. A great, funny article that really hit the nail on the head with what happened last night

Watch the Ron Paul clips
If the "liberals" watch the Ron Paul clips with their eyes closed and pretend their favorite Democrat is saying his words they will get warm in their pants. The difference between Paul and ALL the other candidates is that Paul is genuine and not a triangulating CFR-appointed closeted neocon like one female Democratic front-runner. If it comes down to Paul vs. Clinton she will get completely destroyed. Hillary "Police State" Clinton getting the nomination is Ron Paul's ultimate secret weapon.
And Kucinich/Gravel are nothing compared to Paul, the "we have our own Ron Paul" argument that the Kos crowd spews is garbage. When the Democrats grow a pair and start breaking foreign policy taboos regarding Israel, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and our other 'friends' in the war on terror then maybe they will deserve the attention Ron Paul is getting. You know, being America-first instead of Israel-first in order to make real and needed foreign policy changes.
Oh well, the Democrats must be taking a cue from Pelosi on these matters. The security of Israel comes first, the security of the people, well... I'm sure it is somewhere near the bottom.

Great Synopsis
I agree with other contributor, its the only way be informed about the debates. I tried watching and had to switch off after 5 mins. I think that all should be informed on how the Dark Side thinks and says.

Well done!
A rather hilarious recap, Mr. Scherer. I definitely have to not watch the Republican debates more often.

I'm not a prayin' man...
but if I were, I'd be a-prayin' that the Repugs would keep getting their read on the zeitgeist so very VERY wrong. So far, they're answering my every prayer by doubling down and showing us that they believe the road to the White House is paved with being even BIGGER assholes than they have been for the past 40+ years.
They really seem to believe that what's wrong with their party is that they're not Neo-con ENOUGH, so they have to bear down and grunt, and shit out even more criminality and asininity.
Yes, Huckabee is scary - and even more so because, if you don't listen too carefully, like most Repug voters don't, he sounds almost reasonable.
But for my money, the most interesting portion of the evening was at Minute 99. Again with the prayers, I can only hope they did that because they don't want assholes, not because they want bigger assholes.
It was not a good night. Perhaps the first time I've ever agreed with Frank Luntz.

Dead fish indeed!
It's almost worth watching the debates just to appreciate your coverage more. Almost.

Better Than NPR
I heard some of this stuff on NPR this morning but they left out the part about the fish; the most significant item. They are still looking over their shoulders for some deranged conservative legislator hell-bent on cutting off their funding.

"That means if we make a mistake, we make it as a single country"
We? We did no such thing. We were against this from the beginning. YOU did this. Trying to drag the collective "we" into this as accomplices is the height of intellectual dishonesty.
But, I am glad to see a Repub finally realizing that this was a mistake. Pretty soon, maybe some of them will catch on that it was a crime.

Let's not be too eager to start counting chickens
I'm not smart or well-informed enough to make a prediction but I'm feeling reckless today and want to riff on an earlier poster's hope that someday being a Republican will be a social embarrassment.
I'll go farther and predict that within seven years, the Republican Party as we know it will cease to exist.
Be careful about saying things like that. That's pretty much what Tom DeLay and his supporters were saying about Texas Democrats (and what Rove's ambition was for Democrats nationally). But that sort of arrogant overreaching is largely what did them in.

Republicans are Fishers of Men.
I'd say the fish stuff is a reference to the fish symbol of Christianity, intended as a reassurance to the Christian Right viewing public that all these guys are, indeed, very, very Christian and Right.
But the other interpretations are a lot more interesting, not to mention accurate.

The Surge Is Working!
Initially, I had thought that it was a darned shame that Romney appeared to be buying into the myth that the surge is working, and wondered if he bothers to read anything that isn't published by the administration.
But I have to admit that I was stunned when McCain slammed Romney, by insisting that this surge IS working. McCain was my favorite, back when he was running against Bush in the primaries, but he continues to just fall down and go boom every time I think he has almost redeemed himself (which hasn't been often, this time around).
I am so glad that I didn't have to actually watch this debate. It is hard enough to read about it. Disappointment and Disgust keep being my basic feelings, especially when I keep finding Ron Paul the only person I'd vote for in a primary. Yike!
Thank you, Salon! Waterboarding can't be worse torture than I'd feel if I was forced to listen to these "debates".
