the democrats need to nominate edwards if they want to win, Hillary and Obama can't win and even if they could they will energize the right wing base and all the swing congressional districts would go republican
Nobody can come right out and say this though and all the Dems are progressive really, so Edwards has to give liberals a substanative justification for supporting him over the others in the primary.

Edwards is full of it
I used to just be fairly unimpressed by Edwards, but increasingly I'm getting to really dislike him. Think, people. What is a "Washington Lobbyist"? Yes, there are lobbyists working for the tobacco industry or the timber industry or the oil industry, etc. There are also lobbyists working for the rights of disabled people, or gay people, or funding for cancer research. And besides, an individual "Washington Lobbyist" can't donate any more money than any other individual citizen in the country. Do you really think a $3,000 check from a "Washington lobbyist" is going to buy a candidate? There is definitely a problem with money and politics, but this particular "stand" is nothing but a cynical ploy. Just like his "realization" that the war in Iraq was bad and his subsequent "apology". Bullsh*t. Its all show. Hillary's response was honest, as he probably knew it would be, and it might hurt her, as he undoubtedly hoped.
Sure Edwards gives a good speech and says nice things, but I'm just not sure there's much more to him.
And another thing: any Democrat who borrows from the Republican reportoire of slanderous lies (i.e., "renting out the Lincoln bedroom") to attack fellow democrats should be whomped on the head.

Billy was bashed over and over on policy.
I remember him being yelled at by Jerry Brown on Donahue.
It honed Billy up and readied him for the general election...and also prompted him to pick Al Gore as his running mate for HELP.
Keep it up John...head of the DOJ in 2009!

Edwards has a certain facility and uses it to near-perfection. It's easy to see how he parlayed his law career into a fortune.
He's great at catching flies. And if he wants to swat Hilary he can't very well say "..but my buddy Barack here, he'd be a fine choice if you don't want me", now can he? Well I guess he could if he were a damn fool, but he's not.
I'm still betting on Obama for any number of reasons, but if not him then Edwards, and praying that will be my choice, since I come from the other side of the aisle and can't vote in the local Dem primary.
Gimme Obama or give me Edwards, the quick or the dead. Just don't give me the same ol' same ol' dressed up as Hilary. Novelty alone won't change anything for us. Edwards is working that row and doing a nice job.
This really was a pointless and annoying article, ya know?

IMHO Edwards has actually been too cautious. He needs to make bigger breaks with conventional Democratic wisdom.

Remember this is the guy who managed to creep out the already creepy John Kerry...
...with the repetition (!?) of the story that he "had never shared with anyone" about hugging the body of his dead son... Kerry knew that Edwards was lying about having "never shared [the story] with anyone" before because (this is where Keith Olbermann pauses before pronouncing who is the "Worst Person in the World") -- Edwards had used the same story on Kerry before, and had apparently forgotten that he had done so.

I kind of liked Edwards...
until I heard him speak on Israel and realized that he - like the other Democratic candidates - will continue to suck up to the Israel Lobby that has taken America's foreign policy hostage to the interests of a foreign country (and an unsavory one for that matter if you are able to look past all the spin).
The real questions facing any candidate are:
1) How many more American lives - not to mention Iraqi lives - have to be lost before you end the neocon war in Iraq?
2) Will you be able to stand the pressure of the Israel Lobby and avoid a second even more devastating war with Iran?

JOHN EDWARDS FOR DEMOCRATIC PRESIDENT
Judging just from this post, I'd guess that Michael Scherer is an inside-the-Beltway pundit punk on the order of David Broder or David Brooks. Maybe I'm being too harsh, because I've never heard of this particular idiot.
But why should he be getting on John Edwards for making very legitimate attacks on Hillary "the Triangulator" Clinton or Barack Obama? They're his opponents in the Democratic primaries, for chrissakes.
Edwards is the one out front on universal health care, not Hillary or Obama. That counts a lot for me, as both my wife and my autistic son will be uninsured come 2008.
Also, Edwards was honest and brave enough to admit that he was wrong to vote for Bush's War Resolution in 2002 (very much unlike Hillary, who admits to making no mistakes -- except trusting George W. Bush. What does that say about her gullibility and political cowardice?)
I like the fact that Obama said he would've voted against the Iraq War, but why isn't he pulling for an immediate withdrawal? We fucked up going in, but the coming out is going to be fucked up, too. Just get opur American troops home and out of harm's way. The Iraqis are going to keep killing each other, no matter what we do.
Outside of Al Gore, John Edwards is the most moral and centered candidate the Democrats have. The more of Edwards I see, the more I like him.
