Letters to the Editor

This letter is associated with the following article:
Many are still struggling on the Gulf Coast. But casino and real estate investors are living large -- thanks to Republican officials.
  • Interesting that...

If you look at other articles about Larry Craig, there are 20 times as many posts elsewhere on this website than on this article here...not sure if that's a sign of indifference, or just plain acceptance by Salon readers of how impossible this situation is to fix with a White House hell-bent on some farcical chase after terrorists...you be the judge of that. We have more lives affected by this catastrophy than anything some terrorist could possibly do to this country, and yet we spend 100's of billions of dollars basically wrecking other countries in the Middle East...and for what, "national security"?

Despite Brickbat's hard to understand prose, I will agree that this whole mess is just plain sad, and it's fuelled by greedy Republican's that are pro-business to a fault. The article even takes a very Old Man Potter-esque swipe at the mayor of Biloxi. I can just imagine seeing George Bailey running down the main street in "Pottersville" in his alternate universe dream-sequence...

All I have to say is woe is the day when one of these highway bridges collapses out there...if what happened in Minn. had happened down there in a similar gulf city, can you imagine how furious people in this country would be at the U.S. govt? Unfortunately, without some kind of NEW major disaster, this kind of neglect about our national infrastruction falls off the radar screen.

To the post about NC and Hurricane Floyd...to use your phrase, the takeaway from your post is that people have to rebuild on their own and can't rely on the govt. to do so...look at NC, they did it after Hurricane Floyd, right? Sure...nevermind the fact that Katrina caused $81 billion dollars in damage to the Gulf coast, compared to a mere $5.7 billion dollars from Floyd (that's inflation-adjusted dollars, I might add)...and Floyd happened at a time when FEMA was at it's peak performance under Clinton's admin...not the FEMA we had under Bush when Katrina hit. So if you want to back up your arguement, make a better comparison next time...Katrina does NOT = Floyd...

If you want to make a difference rather than bitching about it here, go volunteer with one of the many reconstruction groups going to Gulf area...they could use a little bit of your time and effort, because money given to reconstruction obviously isn't getting to the right people down there.
