  • they will lose and,i do not care..

The democrats will lose......They are paralyzed with fear and cannot escape that mental state. They are akin to a battered wife whose husband keep threatening her with more bodily harm if she calls the police........>>>>Hell,she has nothing to lose by calling the law because, either way she is still going to get abused.>>>

I believe that the republican goons keep coming up with these silly threats against democrats and, instead of calling their bluff, they capitulate every time......As for me,I have torn up my voter registration card so,I won't even be tempted to vote for any of these undeserving cowards......Anyone who won't even fight to have my vote counted is definitely unworthy of that vote.

    Eric,

  • Someone teach them

Eric, you really got to the heart of it. Words are just so much filler when you react to the Republican aggression with appeasement. How about responding with a little bite. Fighting back is not a bad. Remember the American Revolution was a violent affair. No one was interested in appeasing the English. At the core of the the USA's very foundational narrative is the decision to fight against tyrrany. It does not involve capitulations and compromise to the point where there is no integrity.

Despite sentiments reported in polls and bad focus groups, failing to respond to negative attacks is not percieved as noble. It's a type of political pacifism communicating quite clearly to many Americans that Democrats simply do not have the stomach to respond in a strong and principled manner to attacks against the US. Basically, if they won't even stand up to attacks against themselves, why should anyone trust them to stand up for the nation.

It's like the smart guy against the school yard bully. The kids may know the smart guy is smarter but they also think he is weaker. And our national narrative involves smart guys willing to throw a punch at a bully and mean it.

  • Amen!

It is absolutely pathetic that in order to win high office in this land a candidate must forego an issues-based approach for an emotion based one- but alas Westen and you who have responded to this article thus far are absolutely right. Even though the Bush years have been an unprecedentd disaster, and the current crop of Republicans seem determined to go down with the Bushevik ship, playing nice with this American Taliban ain't the way to get our country back- and the man and women on the street know this even if too many of those who would represent us don't. It reinforces the impression those of us who oppose Bushevism are so weak and uncertain of our own values we would be ineffective trying to implement them. And it validates the perception I have often heard expressed even here that there isn't a significant difference between the Repugs and the Democrats. The Democrats need to make it clear they are not Republican Lite. A good start would be for the Democratic-led Congress to quit caving in to Bush.

  • "If you liked Bush ...

... you'll love Rudy!" Or Fred, or Mitt, or whatever goofball the GOP offers up. Simple, direct ... all the stuff Democrats aren't. I PRAY they take Westen's advice (and my humble offering)and tag every single statement and ad with this line.

  • This is what I've been saying for years.

Check some of my other posts.

Like Christianslayer, I've also given up hope on the Democratic party. They'd rather blame Ralph Nader for their 2000 loss rather than Jeb Bush's voter suppression in Florida, the illegal intervention of the Supreme Court in Florida's recount, or the fact that Gore was a shitty candidate.

I've waited all my adult life for another Harry Truman or FDR, and I keep getting Jimmy Carters, Walter Mondales, Michael Dukakises and John Kerrys.

The only Democrat with any balls in my lifetime was Clinton and he sold this country down the river with NAFTA, GATT and the WTO.

Folks, this country's fucked. We're going the way of the late Soviet Union. I'm looking to get off the grid and wait out the coming storm. It shouldn't have been necessary, but the Democrats I've depended on to stand up to the Neo-Fascists in the Republican party have wussed out every time.

As I tell my martial art students, we need less Wong Foo and more Roadhouse.

  • When Americans vote for a President

they're really voting for a dad. And most Americans seem to prefer a thuggish, hypocritical dad who experiences sudden episodes of rage and never apologizes for the damage he causes to a dad that seems even a little weak. This is true even if the seemingly weak dad is a better man and is telling us things that we know are true.

Beats me how the Democrats will get past the American voter's inner terrified child and access the nation's frontal lobe.

  • We all seem to get it,

Those of us posting: that we are disgusted with the way most of the Democrats have responded to the Republican attacks. Why can't these seemingly intelligent people who seem so smart and qualified see it as well? We need not stoop to their level per se, but merely respond to their mindless violence with a mindful violence, a measured violence: one measured to take them out so they do not come back at us again. It is either that or continue on this way of trying to talk with those who will not talk with you, and only use your reasonableness as an opportunity to take you out. It is unfortunate, but is there any other choice? The writer who complained that we want a violent father figure does not have it quite right: we want a father figure who will stand up for us against the bullies with intelligent force. I am so sick of the Democrats right now I absolutely am tempted to follow the other writer into not voting at all: and that is a real despair, because Bush seemed to have taught me that any non-Republican would be better for us. But if the Democrats continue to act as they do, I feel a real despair for the whole process and may just opt out (with a bow to the martial artist teacher's point.

What the heck is wrong with these Democratic party leaders????????????????????????
