Joe Lieberman, from his indie perch

In a Salon interview, the super-hawk senator talks about his "liberation" from the Democratic Party, John McCain's campaign nosedive, and why Clinton, Obama and the other Dems are wrong on Iraq.

The letters thread is now closed.

Wow

Watching him shill for Hagee is perhaps the funniest part.

And this is the kind of lunacy that's portrayed as moderation in the "liberal media."

Disgusting

As a lifelong liberal Democrat, former Connecticut resident and voter, I've followed Lieberman's career carefully for a long time. I'm proud to say that I never voted for Mr. Lieberman as a Senator. I held my breath and voted for him on the Gore ticket, but it was purely from desperation - and as far as I'm concerned, he's the one who lost that race for Al Gore.

He is a disgrace to Connecticut, the Senate, this country, and the human race - a sanctimonious, self-righteous, hypocritical war-monger. I look forward to the day that the voters of Connecticut correct their mistake and dump him out of office, from whence he can leap into a position as a resident stooge "Democrat" for Fox News.

Hannity and Lieberman? Wouldn't surprise me.

A Swing and A Miss

In answer to Shapiro's question "Is there something that you could say to them so they could look back in, say, five years and say, 'You know, Joe Lieberman may have had a point'?", Lieberman said, in part:

Here's what I would say to people who are opposed to the war. Acknowledging all the mistakes that were made. . .

Well, that's the problem right there, isn't it, Senator? President Bush won't acknowledge "all the mistakes that were made." Neither will Rumsfeld. (He probably "can't recall.") When asked if he has any regrets, Cheney replied with a simple, heart-felt, "No." How on Earth can they "begin to reevaluate" if they can't even face the reality of their own errors?

We will draw a veil over Lieberman's Bush-like conflation of the insurgency and al-Qaida, how profoundly silly it is to worry about how a pullout "will be a very damaging loss of credibility for us" (do we have any credibility left, Senator?), and why it's idiotic for a man who had to wear a flak jacket and have a military escort on his visit to still think that "there is still hope to stabilize the country" when we can't even stabilize the Green Zone (doesn't he read his briefings?).

But aside from Iraq, what struck me was his absurd dance around the whole Alberto Gonzales issue. If anyone has any doubts about which side of the aisle Lieberman stands on, his non-answers on that topic should erase them all. "I should look that up," "It was earlier in the year" (wow, way back in June!), "It was a political vote," "That's the question I don't answer," "He serves at the pleasure of the President." He may caucus with the Democrats, but he's obviously been getting the RNC talking point memos.

Thank you so much, people of Connecticut; I'm so pleased to be stuck with this guy for another five years.

Why

is Salon giving this cretin a forum? I refuse to even read the article, I don't feel like having to puke this evening.

The Missing Question

... On the purpose for which the [group] is organized -- support of our ally Israel and opposition to extremist regimes that threaten both Israel and the United States -- I don't have any regrets about it.

And right after that should have been

So it doesn't matter to you why they support Israel -- even if what they hope to see for Israel is an escalating spiral of violence and continued regional warfare, you're still with them?

But it wasn't, because to ask that question would be to expose the unholy madness that festers at the heart of the alliance between the American and Israeli right. We might begin to discuss whether there is a limit to what the US should sacrifice to placate that seemingly unimpeachable minority of Israelis who would rather see Arab corpses and a world in flames than accept any part of their responsibility for peace.

But that's not what "independent" Joe Lieberman wants to talk about. Anything, in fact, but that.

Lies, damn lies

Where is the evidence that Iran and the Taliban are cooperating? Why is Sen. Lieberman equating the danger to us from the Taliban or Al-Qaida with that from the Ayatollahs?

Does Sen. Lieberman care about America's interests in the Middle East? If so, why is he so worried by Iran and not as much by Pakistan? Iran supported us in Afghanistan and is supporting the US-backed government in Iraq. Pakistan is a country with the bomb where the Taliban have found shelter.

vermin

I read half of it..then I just couldn't stand it anymore.

The man is vermin. He is scum. People with any respect for themselves wouldn't be caught in the same room with this quisling.

He is *everything* that is wrong with our political culture. He's a lying, spinning, opportunistic hack..in the immortal words of Hunter S. Thompson, he's "a treacherous, gutless old wardheeler who should be put in a goddamn bottle and sent out with the Japanese current."

Ah, Hunter, we miss ye.

As for Lieberman, just let me echo the sentiments of others here by saying, thanks SO much, Connecticut, for inflicting this quisling on us for ANOTHER FIVE F*^%$#@ YEARS!

I wish we could put the entire GOP on that bottle, is all I can say.

Traitor Joe

Traitor Joe is such an obnoxious hypocrite that it is difficult to read through this matter knowing that he has contracted the Republican habit of lying outright to make a point. Traitor Joe has turned his career into a “me first” scenario, and I for one would like to know who’s paying his bills. Looking back on election history, it seems as if Al Gore made such a mistake choosing Traitor Joe as a running partner, that maybe Al Gore should be in show-biz, instead of government. Certainly having this creep on the ticket is akin to malfeasance, and now it’s up to the people of Traitor Joe’s home state to send him to the dumpster where he belongs.

Independent Media Like Salon Needs to Be MUCH Tougher On People Like Lieberman

All the American people have been hearing from Bush, Cheney, and their supporters (including Lieberman) is how we can't leave Iraq because the Middle East will destabilize and our children will die.

No specifics on what the next step is in this phase of the War on Terror. No candid assesment on what it's going to take to maintain the current levels of military spending, both in money and lives. No analysis on what the hundreds of millions of humans who actually live in the Middle East think about the US military occupation.

I know independent media outlets can't get near the President, but when the opportunity comes to interview one of his few remainaing supporters, I think that person should be challenged to justify their position with proof that they are right. Salon should have pressed Lieberman much harder than it did.
