  • Like A Pilgrimage To Graceland

Watching the Repooplican candidates form a dutiful line to buss the butts of the Religious Right and swear a feckless fealty to their "principles" reeks of the politics of unctuousness.

Like the proverbial pilgrimage to Graceland by the double-wide trailer set, these purveyors of piety believe that appearing before them...on bended knee...will cause their average slack-jawed syncophant to vote for the "blessed and approved" candidate...therefore rendering themselves Caesar...or, Pontius Pilate.

The late-lamented John McCain had it about right when he referred to them as "intolerent bigots", in so many words. He was chastened, declared himself a sinner for having doubted their Godliness and groveled at their feet, begging forgiveness. Too bad he didn't excercise the same backbone with the Religious Right that he did with his North Vietnamese captors.

I'd have more respect for any of these vascillating and vacuous Repooplican candidates if they would simply be true to their original principles; deserting long-held moral stands on issues simply to win over a group of voters speaks volumes about that candidates lack of fortitude.

George Herbert Walker Bush...a long-standing friend of my family and recipient of much campaign contributions from them...abandoned his long-standing advocacy of a woman's right to choose in order to be Vice-President under Ronald Reagan. Jerry fallwell's so-called Moral majority had demanded that Reagan extract that promise from Bush before he would be deemed "acceptable" to the Religious Right in the 1980 election.

We wrote off George Herbert Walker Bush as a recipient of our largesse shortly thereafter. Mr. Giuliani will soon find himself in a similar position...seen by both sides of the political spectrum as simply an opportunist and possessing a backbone consisting of moist macaroni.
