Hallelujah!!
And now for my next fantasy -- someone he knows in Australia gets PTSD and Rupert becomes interested in cannabinoid science.
Oh well, one tipping point at a time.
Seriously, though, this article almost made me cry. I'm glad to know this. Maybe there's hope after all. Thank you.

What bothers me so much...
Is that this is what Gore was saying 15 years ago. That "greening" is good business, I mean. He envisioned America being out front on environmental technology, the world's leader. He was PRO-BUSINESS b/c he recognized the problem of limited natural resources and proposed that we capitalize on it. And he was mocked as a hoot owl advocate.
It's a little late, Murdoch. I don't mind when people come late to a party, but it's shameful to trample reputations on the long, tortuous way in. Rather than a gradual slide into this position, acting like it's a given, I think an acknowledgment of past blindness on the issue is in order.

. . . and Falwell was a reasonable bloke?
Some years back Dennis Potter, an English playwright, when dying from cancer, said that he ought to shoot Rupert Murdoch, but regretted that it wasn't the way he did things.
Rupert Murdoch greening Fox could only be done one way, closing down the whole rotten, bigoted, biased, dumbing-down network.
Hearst, as portrayed in Citizen Kane, was a reasonable and honourable character compared to the greedy bastard Murdoch.
As for greening, - got some other jokes??
Shame Potter didn't take that pot-shot!

Murdoch's Green = $$$$$$
A newer, Green-er Murdoch?
Assuming it's not all about the Greenback … I'll take it. Grudgingly.
But, as a previous poster remarked, it would smell sweeter and happen sooner if it involved simply ending everything with Murdoch's murderously mediocre stamp on it.
IF (and it's still an if) Australia's favorite fascist moves ahead on this, EVERY OTHER MEDIA OUTLET ON THE PLANET should use past FOX clips and newsreels to shove this belated (and too late?) conversion down their throats. To remind them, not simply that they are Johnny Come Lately's on this issue, but that they routinely and roundly abused EVERYONE who was even remotely eco-friendly over the past decade … and more.
FOX FLIP-FLOPPERS.
As Murdoch says, Hannity is "intelligent" enough to see what quarter the wind blows from. He'll know that what The Boss "suggests" is what The Boss "commands." O'Reilly is more dense. He'll have to massage his way to a nuanced "conversion." But, I relish the thought of him eating crow on this. One way or the other he will turn into the Hulk before our very eyes! And, of course, he'll laugh it off and say that being Oirish by background (or association) he's always been Green at Heart! It's in his blood! … Oh, Such a Charmer!
And, after that, it'll be just a hop and a skip to claiming that they Always Opposed The War In Iraq (after they voted for it). And, before we know where we are, FOX will declare that "Liberal" is the New "Conservative." And, voila, in the blink of an eye, the Empire will end and … we'll all be free!
(Sorry. Starting to lose it here. Gotta expect that when the Green Murdoch comes to town I guess).

Well he may be an opportunistic son of a bitch...
but he's our opportunistic son of a bitch. Okay, perhaps not best to invoke LBJ and Vietnam, but there's an ounce of truth to the statement in this context. He's in our tent. And as long as he's in our tent, business is good.

Don't look a gift horse in the mouth
Rupert Murdhoch wants to go green? This is great news. This is something we should be excited about. Do you know how much power and influence he has? Do you know the impact he can make with this message?
I was optimistic reading this article. I think Rupert Murdoch can be an enormous force for the environmental movement, and he should be welcomed with open arms.
Instead the majority of the Salon letter writers (so far) complain about this shift in his beliefs, look for ulterior motives, and mock this policy. Why not just be happy he joined the cause instead of chastising him for doing so?

Seducing the hippies to watch Fox it sounds
So he's going to put quaint hippy save the earf messages on Myspace. Given that according to soccermom.com, ~eleventry trillion % of all people on MySpace are child rapists maybe that's not a bad idea.
And he's going to include recycling challenges on some of his 18-25 hotties drunk and screaming reality shows.
And he's going to replace all the lightbulbs at Legion of Doom HQ with CFL's.
While letting the windbags yell all day about how it's all hoax and how science itself is really a commie queer liberal plot to rape your viginal daughters in the name of Islam etc.

Unmitigated Bullshit
Sorry, Kansasgirl: It really was all just a dream.
Pollution and rape of natural resources are, always have been and always will be the profitable thing to do.
And corporations - ALL corporations - have one motive and one motive only: profit.
Pretending to go green, advertising that you're going green, making a few meaningless gestures toward greenness: That's profitable.
Actually going green, making the hugely expensive changes and sacrifices necessary to actually make a difference: That's NOT profitable, and therefore will never, ever happen.
Remember Lily Tomlin: No matter how cynical you get, it's never adequate to the occasion.

Message, Not Messenger, Is What Matters
It's going to be riotous watching righty bloggers trying to spin this. Murdoch's an Australian; Australia's suffering the early effects of climate change already, and the threat to that country is enormous and immediate. Whether his focus is on his business concerns or for the long-term health of the planet isn't at all important; neither is how one feels about his overall politics. This is a potential sea-change moment, and should be welcomed. It's a shame that his outlets have been on the other side of the coin so long, but to dig in one's heels and complain that the guy who now embraces the truth of the matter is a bad ol' dude is childish. Murdoch is right on this issue now, and he wields considerable influence, so three cheers for the victory of science over spin.
