battleships, ants
"There will be those who balk and say that by requesting the NIE we're now effectively equating global warming with military conflict"
Equating - no. That would be a word used by someone who wanted to discredit the idea by setting up a straw man and knocking it down.
But look - the earth has warmed by one degree, worldwide average. And it's going nowhere but up. By contrast, the ice ages were five degrees cooler, worldwide.
That's going to have a significant influence on everything: war, peace, rich people, poor people, science, art, trees, battleships, ants, bicycles, malaria, hantavirus. Guatemala, Singapore, Ireland, Yemen, Antarctica, Namibia. Real estate, cars, stock prices, televisions, pork bellies, refrigerators. Everything.
So, sure, do an NIE cuz it's going to influence national security. Among other things.

It already has caused a security issue of massive proportions.
Just think about it. We now have a government that is forced to lie and continues to lie to cover up the prior lie. it is lying about global warming of all things. That is like lying about the world being flat.
National security has been compromised because the citizens of the United States, indeed the world, recognize that the United States doesn't tell the truth, even on easy things, so they cannot be trust...ergo they (we) are a threat.
Because we cannot be attacted directly (invaded), we have to be attacked a bit "on the sly"...undermined as it will...putting us at risk in a number of new and resourceful ways that we weren't before as our risks were overt (yes 9-11 was an overt attack).
See.
