Conserva-babe and star-in-the-making Rachel Marsden has a, um, colorful past. What was Fox thinking?
The letters thread is now closed.
  • Chris...

    The opening paragraph made it clear the two hosts of the show were shocked and made every effort to distance themselves, and the network, from her statement.

    Is Marsden still working for Fox.

    If she is, then the Fox executives were not displeased enough with her performance to fire her.

    The purpose of commentators like Marsden and Coulter is to push the Overton window to the political right. Something they are very good and successful at.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Overton_window

    The Overton window is a concept in political theory, named after the former vice president of the Mackinac Center for Public Policy, Joe Overton, who developed the model. It describes a "window" in the range of public reactions to ideas in public discourse, in a spectrum of all possible options on an issue. Overton described a method for moving that window, thereby including previously excluded ideas, while excluding previously acceptable ideas. The technique relies on people promoting ideas even less acceptable than the previous "outer fringe" ideas. That makes those old fringe ideas look less extreme, and thereby acceptable. By moving the limited range . Delivering rhetoric to define the window provides a plan of action to make more acceptable to the public some ideas by priming them with other ideas allowed to remain unacceptable, but which make the real target ideas seem more acceptable by comparison.

    The degrees of acceptance of public ideas can be described roughly as:

    * Unthinkable

    * Radical

    * Acceptable

    * Sensible

    * Popular

    * Policy

    The Overton Window is a means of visualizing which ideas define that range of acceptance by where they fall in it, and adding new ideas that can push the old ideas towards acceptance merely by making the limits more extreme.

  • Wow...

    ...another stupid piece of shit with a mouth and THIS one's from Canada, no less.

  • How sick can some people be!

    Could the left be anymore sick? The language they use and the character assinations are beyond comprehension. Ann Coulter may use spicy language but her language would be angelic compared to the language and reckless statements made by the radical bloggs I read here. Its hard for the radical left to admit anyone to their right might also be just as educated and perhaps just as honest. This foul language and accusations just makes a normal person want to upchuck and definitely stay away from any of the far left.

  • A Couple of Clarifications

    The movie inspired by Marsden's stalking of the swim coach is Swim Fan starring Jesse Bradford (Flags of our Fathers & West Wing) and Erika Christensen (The Upside of Anger).

    As to Marsden being crazy, after she was jailed for stalking the radio host she was deemed competent to stand trial by a court-ordered psychiatric evaluation.

  • To Disgusted:

    It has nothing to do with left or right. It has to do with assholes. The far left has just as many assholes as the far right. As a matter of fact, moderate liberals are just as likely to be assholes as moderate conservatives.

    It's nothing to do with politics. Just assholes.

  • out with the coulter, in with the new bitch

    Wow, just what we need -- an army of conservative fem-bots to roll their eyes and make juvenile comments about liberal targets for the sake of ratings and further dumbing-down andschoolyard-leveling-down of the American political discourse.

    Greeeeeaaaat. The contributes so much that is negative and corrosive to the collective unconscious. Thanks for that, Fox News.

  • You can keep her

    So Rachel Marsden strikes again, eh? That woman is a piece of work. Please keep her below the 49th parallel. We don't want her back.

  • I thought the name was familiar.

    I thought the name was familiar... and then I read the article. Of course--I remember this fruitcake. Er, make that disturbed young woman. Of course, what is troubling is that her behaviour continued past any 'youthful misdeeds' well into what should be maturity.

    Pardon my sarcasm, but I'm so proud to be exporting someone who has this to say on her website:

    Rachel survived growing up in Canada during the socialist regime of Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, best known for his close friendship with Fidel Castro, decimation of the Canadian military, a wife who partied at Studio 54 with the Rolling Stones, and doing pirouettes behind the Queen of England's back. He also has a bunch of useless letters after his name, and met with John and Yoko (back in the pre-Bono days). The dork was considered a sex symbol, although Rachel fails to understand why.

    Fox deserves her. She deserves Fox. Sadly, it seems that Fox "News" is what passes for journalism these days. That is a shame.

    Still, because I am Canadian (the collective noun for a group of Canucks is an apology of Canadians) I am compelled to express my profuse regret that Ms. Marsden is now contributing to the decline of political discourse in the US. I am sorry.

  • Hey Snarlin' Coyote

    We should get together and show some obnoxious roadrunners a thing or two--then maybe collaborate on a book of favourite right-wing slogans and homilies accompanied by Precious Moments-type illustrations of the orator who said them...I'm thinking of when John Stewart said that John Bolton was miserable even as a kid, and the attached picture had a sad-eyed Keane painting of a little boy, with a huge moustache. Anonymous: You are absolutely right when you said there are just as many assholes on the far left as on the far right. I went to Madison in the late '80's for my graduate work and you couldn't turn around without bumping into some sour-faced twit in a doorknob-cosy Rasta hat blathering about restarting the Weathermen and bombing the Pentagon ("It's what Che would have wanted!!"). The operative word is FAR-left. Extremists of any stripe are idiots who can't think for themselves. For the most part I was talking about thoughtful, left-leaning folks ( I just can't think of any thoughtful, reflective right-leaning types!). Point taken; good on you!

  • Who Cares?

    I do not watch Fox, but since you wrote this big story, I went to YouTube and watched a few clips of Red Eye. The show is appalling awful, just like everything else on Fox. It aims for "hip" and ends up with "ham." And was that a laugh track? Or was it just the adolescent snickering of the guys who crack the wise-ass jokes, while the babes--Rachel is the Serious Brunettte--giggle and flash their teeth and look like they are about to pop out of their clothes.

    So what if this woman likes to sexually harass men and women? Her job is to sit in front of the camera and display her thighs while pretending that the inane white guys who surround her are getting her horny. Knowing that she is a convicted stalker will only help the fantasy for the viewers at home. They will imagine her in leather, wielding a whip.

    Fox is not grooming her for her mind. They are creating a dominimatrix fantasy. However, like everything that Fox does, it is second rate. Some other network does it better, with more class, more style.
