Nancy Grace
Is the writer related to Nancy Grace?

SFU is not the Fraser Institute
Not sure how "news junkie" Ranyit feeds his/her habit, but I recommend a new supplier.
Simon Fraser University has no connection to the Fraser Institute, which is indeed a right-wing think tank.
And if you haven't heard of Rachel Marsden before this, you just haven't been paying attention. We've been reporting on her for years. She's been responsible for hundreds of column inches and TV minutes in Canada's national media going back a decade.
I even recall talk of a TV movie about the swim coach escapade.
We may not be proud of her, but we made her what she is today.

All Republicans are NUTJOBS
This article should basically prove once and for all that any woman who considers herself an anti-feminist, whereby arguing for her own debased, second class citizenship, and any human who still supports this administration's desire to bankrupt America for its own immediate interests beholden to the oil industry, apocalypto Christian death seekers, and racist anti-Arab Isrealies, is a NUT JOB! Hook line and sinker!
It also shows that her own trauma in her youth (i.e. Daddy as a pedophile and her possible own bout with incest, who knows) led her to a fanatical obsession with Daddy is always right mentality that Republicans always resort to. It's a fanatical unwavering desire to hang onto hierarchy (male Daddy shit) even when that hierarchy is abusing it's power. It's PATHOLOGICAL. For an up close and personal view of what that looks like watch the film "DownFall" in which the final days of Hitler in his bunker is detailed. Looks a lot like a Republican hoe down, minus the bar-be-que.

@saintzak re: Cowell
saintzak wrote, in part:
"Simon Cowell: not talented, not interesting in the least"
*******
You're entitled to your opinion, but after observing Cowell on American Idol for some years now, I can say, as a musician of modest talent myself, that Cowell's judgements of the contestants are not only consistently unerring, they include concise nuanced insight that tells me Cowell is a very interesting guy. He's often quite witty--if occasionally cruel--too.
As for the larger question: entertainment has *always* involved freaks and geeks. The only time serious, earnest people make it into show business is when we make fun of them... maybe the most notable example I can think of on this line was the 17th century British habit of putting famous literary or political figures on display in cages, in their dotage, drooling and gabbling in the final stages of senile dementia. I am not making that up, btw.
So, by that standard, our current entertainment figures are pillars of civility.
As for Marsden. She is most definitely hot. That, plus her ability to speak understandable English and trash all things "librul" make her a star for the right. And, I agree with other posters who propose that she will self-destruct sooner or later. She probably is a disordered personality. And time alone does not fix that problem.

Oops
Um, Richard. Probably just an unintentionally poor choice of words, but the use of the term "faggot" is not just derrogatory when used with reference to "respected fathers".
-
Armchair Psychology
It sounds like this woman was sexually abused by her father. Wild speculation, I know, but it fits the facts.
-
Watch out!
Great article, Rebecca. I hope your phone number is unlisted. Take it from me -- Rachel Marsden is batshit insane.

Yikes...
I know we are talking FOX News here - but still - it's a little disingenuous for any organization to claim that a past involving criminal dishonesty shouldn't be something taken into account when hiring people in the journalistic profession.
Ummm, you answered your (sort of) question before you even asked it. Fox is the epitome of disingenuousness.
George Will wants to compare Ann Coulter to Paul Krugman
Wasn't Will one of the chorus comparing Bush to FDR/Lincoln/Churchill/someone with a clue? I guess comparing Coulter to Krugman would be like comparing George Will to Thomas Jefferson.
-
"Political expertise"
How revealing, that Fox considers a foul mouth and nasty temperament to be the equivalent of "political expertise."
-
But how intimidated are people by Fox?
It's hard for me to get upset with the network, simply because I don't watch it. But at the end of the day, no matter how frustrating, it's ONE network. The constant need for the left to ridicule, expose, and excoriate this one news outlet is more telling about the critics than the object of their criticism.
It seems to prove that this is a conservative country, Fox is the the main information source for the nation, and as long as it exists the left (and the Democratic party: which is not exactly the same thing) is severely hampered in terms of influencing public thought. Otherwise, why care? It's pretty obvious the shows and personalities that attract so much vitriol are not the news shows or the anchorpersons. It's always the talk shows and personality-fueled commentators.
Why do people waste their time on this? And what does this preaching to the converted accomplish for Salon?

Liberal Ideas
"Rachel finds it cute when liberals think they have an original argument. Chances are she heard it for the first time at the age of 7."
Same with me! It was when I read the Declaration of Independence. Truly a great argument for Liberalism! What a great statement of Liberal Ideas and Ideals. Too bad that with Rachel it didn't sink in.
What a sick world this is when a semi-talented young woman is promoted by a network because they want to have the next Ann Coulter on their payroll.

So what's the surprise about Rachel Marsden?
The Marsden "sexual harrassment" case and its sequels was so well covered by the media at the time that I could follow its course even though I lived at the opposite end of the continent. Fox "News" is well known to be a propaganda loudspeaker with poor taste and high volume gonging away for the farthest shores of the right wing ocean. Marsden with her colorful past is a perfect fit for Fox. So, where is the surprise?
My final note: her explanation of the Gulf of Tonkin was nearly as off the wall as her accusations at Simon Fraser. But, what the hey, I'm only a historian who has written two books on the Vietnam debacle and even though my hair is longer than Rachel's I don't look sexy in shiny leather.
