"Dayenu"
i don't think "killing another six million Jews (much to the delight of Salon readers, no doubt)" is correct. the vast majority here are christians, christians aren't *delighted* at the suffering of the jews, they are sad to see it. they commiserate. jews are *for* commiseration. it's just that they can't stand to see jews win because that would indicate that the jews weren't cursed by christ. similarly the moslems were (relatively) good to humiliated and pitiful jews, but hate strong ones. it makes for cognitive dissonance.

shaunnarine, the letter was indeed a hoax
i did a google |"Letter to an Anti-Zionist Friend" harvard fabrication| and came up with http://www.camera.org/index.asp?x_context=8&x_article=369 but the sentiments were real and accurate. "Below is a January 21, 2002 op-ed by U.S. Rep. John Lewis, who worked closely with Dr. King. In the op-ed, he shares Dr. King's views on Israel, views which stressed Israel's democratic nature and Israel's need for security. And he also relates that Dr. King said, “When people criticize Zionists they mean Jews, you are talking anti-Semitism.” This quotation has been confirmed, so you should feel assured that you can use the quotation in letters. Just be sure to mention that it came from Dr. King's 1968 Harvard University appearance, so that no one will think it is from the debunked “letter.”

"and new plans for going after Iran"
You have to read pretty far down in the article to find out that the "Plans for going after Iran" are sanctions...and this is a problem? Sanctions against the Mullahs makes sense to me. If they stop the crazed Mullahs from making nuclear weapons without starting a war, I am all for them. The author seems rather distressed that he couldn't find anyone of authority to promote a nuclear strike against Iran.
Look, Israel is an embattled democracy, taking up less than 1% of the land in the middle east, surrounded by miserable people who have been raised to blame 99% of their problems on Israel. When the Arabs, and the Persians, give up their dream of destroying Israel, they will get back most of the west bank and there will be peace. Don't blame the Israelis, the Jews or the evangelicals for working our political system for their own benefit. We are the reigning world power. All countries work our system for their benefit. The Israelis are just better at it because they have to be.
Once again Salon runs an article suggesting that Israel has to be held to standards not met by anyone else. Try sending a reporter to a meeting of the Cuban-American community and see how politicians pander there.

r.ashen
if you backspace, then space, you won't get the lines chopped up. i liked your second post much better than the first - you can guess why. noam chomsky spent his youth (born 1928) when the whole world was anitsemitic, being beaten up by irish and german catholics in his philadephia neighborhood. jews all have to come to grips with this fear of you, somehow. but noam's method seems too subservient. *agreeing* with those who hate you doesn't seem "american", at least nowadays (i was born in 1945). nevertheless, each generation starts anew. if 100 years go by with no resurgeance of the old hatreds, it will end. but, from what i know of history, i doubt it. "michaelm", thanks.

Not news worthy
I don't believe Gregory Levey is a real name.
I do believe VP Cheney will, upon leaving office, spend most of his time in a Condo
he owns (will own?)in Oman,UAE. The
VP does not get secret service protection upon leaving office. Oman might be the safest place on Earth.

SUPPORT FOR ISRAEL DOES NOT DEFINE BEING JEWISH
As a Jew, I deeply resent the mantra that to be a Jew means to be a right-wing Zionist. As has been noted elsewhere, Israel is no longer the David of the Middle East. It is now the Goliath and it acts like the Goliath. We all know what happened to Goliath. Seeing a Palestinian youth on the front page of the NYT using a sling shot really brings the point home.
I do not subscribe to the notion that AIPAC controls foreign policy--if blind support for Israel were not in the US interest, there would be no support for Israel.
However, the political clout, especially in Congress, stems from the defeat of one Senator (Percy) and one Congressional Representative (Katzenmier) over their sympathy for Palestinians. This occurred in the late 70's. After that, it was clear sailing. Even John Conyers has succumbed. He should know better.
Those who insist that the heart of the problem in the Middle East is the Israeli-Palestinian conflict are correct. Arab efforts to bring the two sides to the table are to be encouraged. The King of Jordan was correct when he said that Israel must decide if it supports a two state solution. The majority of Israeli's do. It is time for the members of AIPAC to get on board.
