You know this free campaign advertising isn't so unfair if you write Fanboy articles about all the democratic candidates. Obama's my choice right now, why don't you do a story about him?
It isn't about whether Hillary is a good candidate, even if she's not good at public speaking!
With what she has said about her decision on the Iraq vote, do you think she would try to end the war?
Worse, Hillary is the Gephardt of this election. A symbol of a bygone Democratic era that the electorate has repudiated time and again.
Further: We don't need to win blue states by more votes. That accomplishes nothing. Do you seriously see anyone crossing the aisle to vote for Hillary?
Has anyone checked Giuliani's "Democratiness" against Hillary's? Not that I like the guy, but they're kind of similar.
It occurs to me that another major liability if Sen. Clinton wins the presidency is that, as the first woman president, she'll be so eager to prove to the electorate that she has the "cajones" to protect the U.S., she will embrace a foreign policy that is every bit as militaristic and macho stupid as that championed by our glorious tough guy Top Gun cowboy, Fuhrer Bush. To me, this is the most dangerous repercussion of electing Sen., CLinton, even putting aside the fact that her election would ensure the perpetuation of establishment DC politics, business as usual.
If it was obvious to an ordinary Joe like myself in the fall of 2002/spring 2003 that invading Iraq was such a stupid idea, then what is Hillary's excuse? Her vote is either an exercise in craven political calculation or she is just as stupid as the neocons that propelled this disaster. Those are the only two explanations for her vote, and whichever one happens to be the case, we don't need another moron in the White House, or an empty suit hack with her political finger twisting in the wind. It's going to take somebody with courage and vision to begin to mitigate the damage of the past six years, and Hillary has already shown she's either too stupid or too cowardly for the job.
Here's what faces the President of the United States in the next 20 years, whoever they may be:
Global warming that probably can't be stopped in time, possibly leading to oxidation of the oceans, and death of most species on the planet; the final decline of world production of fossil fuels, with no *legitimate* substitutes in sight; a China with nuclear weapons and the desire to have the same level of affluence that you see in Manhattan, New York, and Manhattan Beach California...but insufficient energy and resources to achieve that affluence; over 300 million people in a country that can, at least in theory, support only about 125 million in some sort of sustainable fashion, and no current, realistic limits on immigration from poor countries, chiefly Mexico; by extension, 6.1 billion people on a planet that *might* with good management, support about 800 million at something like the level of affluence you can find in a Moscow apartment suburb; insufficient potable water, worldwide, to support anything even remotely close to 6.1 billion souls.
In short, human beings are, as several big brains have been pointing out, a plague species. We are near the apex of our particular bell-curve. How will the next three US Presidents deal with these problems? How? Might be worth thinking about that before we case our votes in 2008.
One thing's certain. Another 4-8 years of a GW Bush-type presidency, and we can kiss our asses goodbye. We may have to do that anyway.
We need a Kennedy right now. A Lincoln. An FDR. Short of that? We are in deep, deep shit.
To me, it doesn't matter what she does, nothing will make me vote for her. I won't vote Republican but if she wins, the Greens have my vote. I don't believe in dynasties, period. Enough of hereditary rule, no matter the party.
I share your trepidation at the state of the world, Chas. Not to be dismissive of the threat of terrorism, but the greatest issue facing humanity in the 21st century is clearly the environment. When I add up the totality of the issues out there - fish stock depletion, destructive agricultural practices, ocean warming and deterioration, freshwater shortages all over, including here in the American southwest, overpopulation and obviously, an absurdly wasteful use of energy and resources, it can only lead to a conclusion that things do not bode well for the long-term survival of our species. I hope we are not the first species to have the technological know-how to prevent its own extinction but that was unable to do so because of arrogance, indifference and complacency. We truly need an enlightened leader in the WHite House in 2008, now more than ever.
you may think that they are nothing alike, and in reality they may not be, but their cultural positions, by that I mean their positions in the culture, ARE very similiar, and for that reason I doubt very much if either one of them could be elected.
Hillary won't get elected President because outside of NY and a few other states, folks don't read and don't think hard. They watch FOX News and nod at Rush Limbaugh... dems got elected in the last election not because they are universally loved, but because the GOP candidates were, even on FOX News, plainly idtots and evil. Plus there was a firestorm (rightly so) of bad GOP-connected press.
It is unlikely that Hillary, if she becomes the candidate, will have such a perfect storm.
So that's a worry. A bigger worry though, is what is she? She's for abstinence, a flag burning amendment, speaks out agaist abortion, seems to be for the war...
The inconvenient truth is Hillary may be a woman, may be Bills' wife, may be more personable than the shrew she plainly was for most of her life, but she isn't strong, she isn't solidly a DEM.
Those that love her love what they THINK she is. Those that hate her hate because what they THINK she would do.
Those that hate her-- not in the DEM party but nationwide-- outnumber those that even remotely like her 2-1 at least.
She will never be President. If she is the nominee, get ready for 8 more years of the same drain.
