no.no.no
I am afraid I skimmed the article because I dont really care to dissect the characters, who feels this way, who feels that way, what this group did and when, who's joining and why, ad nauseum, ad infinitum. Another know-it-all who knows nothing. Who the fuck cares what these backward-looking, sixth century religious wackos whose governmental ideas have more in common with Caligula than Jefferson. This guy says oh no,you cant leave. It'll be a bloodbath and everybody will blame you. Everybody who exactly? The idiots there? The Europeans? The pope. Who exactly? Nobody will care. Repeating the horrors of the Balkans, fighting over some stupid-ass religious differences that happened 8 centuries ago,or oil, or power, means nothing to me if it entails the loss of more Americans and spending more money, pounding it down a rathole. It means nothing to me anyway. Who exactly gives a damn. If the US left tomorrow, in six months, nobody would remember why we went or why we left. Actually we didnt go did we. We sent some 20 year olds over or some old men with families to get gutted and ripped to shreds on the altar of some bizarre bullshit dreamed up by one more set of know-nothings who got elected on the queers not being able to get married and forced pregnancies. Speaking of backward people, isnt that what inhabits most of the US. Whats the fucking difference. I dont know whos the biggest asshole, people like this joker who wants to put the US in a box, shame it on a guilt trip, or the bozo who created this nightmare. I only know one thing: I dont care if they kill each other until none are left. Its their country. Its their doing. NOT the US. I only care about ending this ignorant ass war, which nobody has the balls to do because they are too fucking busy running for office afraid of losing a vote or they are just too fucking ignorant to get it. They had the balls to start it, to pontificate about nonsense for political gain, as long as somebody else dies for their stupid ass mistake. Enough already. Will a hero please step forward.

So what to do?
I'm afraid the article doesn't make it at all clear what "the only thing left for the US to do" is.
Are we supposed to lie there and take it from all sides?
Bush is in way over his head. The situation is "grave and deteriorating" The Republicans have steadily lost the war over the last four years.
The Democrats have to end it, and end it now. They will be blamed by the repubs for losing Bush's war, no matter what. SO the sooner we retreat the better.

Gitano
As you say in your post, these people are fighting over what happened eight centuries ago.
Do you think they are going to forget who set this catastrofuck in motion by needlessly invading the most secular nation in the middle east on false pretenses? Oh no, they'll remember and they will hate us with the white hot intensity of ten thousand suns. We have opened Pandora's box and we will pay for our arrogance and hubris for a very long time.
Americans may have an attention span measured in how long the average sitcom takes to wind through its banal plot but the rest of the world and the Arab world in particular suffer from no such limitations.
"I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that his justice cannot sleep forever."
--Thomas Jefferson

Consequences
The article highlights the nightmare consequences of not only the invasion of Iraq, but the disaster of permitting a country (I’m talking about the US!) to fall into the hands of extremists. All things pass but all we can hope is that history will record the lament of America during this period and the resolve of the people never again to allow the county to be seized by fanatics

Another dreamer
The things that might convince Sunnis to move back in the other direction would be a real step at trying to reform the Iraqi police force, the Interior Ministry, and try and bring some of the individuals in those places, which have committed gross crimes, including crimes on the scale of Saddam Hussein, to justice.
The neocons were living in their fantasy world when they thought Iraq could be turned into a secular pro-western democracy, but the above suggested solution is about on par with that sort of dreaming.
By summer's end Bush will be spinning his tales about how Iraq isn't really another Vietnam.

Well I'm glad he cleared that up
If I re-read that three times I still won't know who's who. Apparently the militias and the insurgents are different. So are the terrorists. The Sunnis and Shiites are against each other, but here comes Al Qaida which is its own thing too. Some of them love Iraq and are fighting to make it their home, while others are blowing up markets because it's an adventure. Ummmm....I'm already lost. Which is which again? Iran figures into this how? The Iraq government is involved with which group again? Ummmm.....why are we there again?
After discussing all this and explaining what a no-win clusterfuck the Iraq situation is, and how only a soldier on every street corner could bring peace, the interviewee drops this clunker: "The U.S. can't leave Iraq." Say what? So we're doomed not to achieve peace, but we can't leave because it will be 100 times worse? So what do we do, then, just hang around being targeted by snipers and IEDs for the next few decades until China steps in to become our world-wide overlords?
I think Bush, Cheney and friends are just trying to stall for time until they can leave office and make a run for it. The Bush family has purchased 500 acres of land in Peru where they plan to spend their retirement (that's part of why the Bush daughters were running around in Argentina a few months back). Bush is going to live out his years on a chunk of real estate adjacent to the Rev. Sun Myung Moon (who owns the Washington Times and funds various right-wing think tanks and whatnot). I'm not making this up, do a Google search for the details. Bush and Cheney are going to jump ship and flee. They won't be sticking around for charity work or ribbon-cutting on presidential libraries.....they've got their tails between their legs and when the tail wags the dog they feel it in their balls.
Anyway, there IS some good news in all of this -- we got Saddam! Got him but good. Still haven't found those WMD, but whatever man. It's not like WMD is the reason we invaded or anything. Ha ha, we're all a bunch of suckers. We all got royally impaled up the keister by a bunch of megalomaniacal powermad aristocratic swine. And they're going to get away with it! What a world!
