Whether you are posting on a political blog, a comment about an article on salon, or leaving comments on your friends' myspace pages, your words are spidered and cached. It isn't like a dinner conversation or golf meeting, you are 100% accountable for eternity for your comments. You may think your audience is like minded people, but your future employers & enemies can and, if you are important enough, WILL read them.
So if your comments reflect your beliefs and you are at one with them, whether or not others agree, great. That's freedom of speech. If they limit your employability, that is your responsibility and better to learn that lesson sooner vs later.
I think it is possible to make intellectual points without crudeness and insensitivity. That makes me an old fuddy duddy I'm sure. (I sure wish Jon Stewart and Bill Maher could tone down the crudeness). I'm a liberal minded feminist, but do get offended by unnecessary crudeness and profanity.
The argument to take post in context of intended audience is fine for free speech, not employability and future consequences.
So I'll be anonymous so I can't be held accountable.
