Astonishingly stupid article. Obama was the president of the Harvard Law Review. What was he supposed to act like? A field hand? A Connecticut preppie prick pretending to be a Texass rancher? He's grown, and continues to grow. Probably more than Mall Wart Murka can deal with now, but an amazing man. I'd still go Edwards/Obama and let the republikans piss into their own wind.
cheeseblinder described this so-called news article as "noxious subgenius blather."
I say, please don't insult the good people of the Church of the SubGenius - the only organized religion honest enough to admit that they made it all up and that they're only in it for the money - by associating them with the style-over-substance reportage typified by this story.
What strikes me as odd is that the reporting on Obama in the press and here on Salon is focuses on his campaign style, neglecting the fact that he is a sitting Senator of the U.S. Congress for two years now. Surely an publication that prides itself on its "original reporting" could have a reporter do some digging on Obama the Senator as opposed to Obama the Candidate.
Praise Bob!
Nothing like a progressive rag trashing a progressive candidate. The use of "uppity" really helped bring out the racist wingnuts like the one before this post. Nice job. And you wonder why I stopped paying a subscription last year.
Obama has sure figured out the charisma thing and his reponse to the Australian Howard about Obama ruining the middle east if the troops leave by March 08 as Obama has proposed was ABSOLUTELY PERFECT. (I still agree with Edwards that the troops should come home NOW.) But Obama made the perfect "put up or shut up" response and he did it immediately. Five points for Obama!
All followers of Bob Dobbs, I apologize wholeheartedly.
I do not care whether the Barack Obama we see today is an act, a man humbled by defeat, or a newly matured man. Whatever. What I care about is, is he telling us the truth about how he feels regarding public policy?
If he is telling us how he really feels about the issues, then whether he's a stiff pretending to be hip, or an actual hipster, is immaterial.
Forget personality: if people vote for Barack Obama, and he stays true to his word, then let us praise him. If he wins office and then betrays the voters, then damn him. Time will tell, but I truly hope, whether he wins or loses, that he does so on the basis of truths, not lies.
Apology accepted. I'll save you a seat on the flying saucer.
While it seems clear that writers at Salon don't like Barack Obama, I'm having trouble understanding why. Why the snarky comments? Why the vitriol? So Obama hasn't always been a skilled politician......so what? Do I care? Not really. Was I surprised to learn that he's not omniscient? No, as I was fairly certain that he is a human being, with all the usual failings associated therewith. And let's not forget my favorite...that he's not "really" black. Good one Debra. You go girl.
Writers like McClelland and Dickerson obviously have some sort of anti-Obama agenda, which is made painfully apparent by their thinly veiled hostility towards him. And hey, while I'll admit that some of these articles have a valid premise, the overall tone of the articles reveals a condescending, almost juvenile bias against him.
One of these days I wouldn't be at all surprised if I came across an article on Salon accusing him of smelling funny and being a "stupid head."
In light of all this, I have a request for Salon. Write an article that explains why y'all don't like Obama. If you got all excited about Hillary becoming our first female president, and now you feel like that might not happen....that's cool, but at least have the stones to admit it. Personally, I'd rather have Obama be our next president, but that doesn't mean I'm gonna start talking sh*t about
Hillary.
after reading this article i wonder if a black presidency is even possible in this country and cultural oneupmanship. does a black candidate have to be vetted by the lowest denominator of that community? all the criticism heaped on him seems like an insult to the rest of us - too educated, too harvard, too patrician? huh? and then of course the kennedy comparisons to a guy who went to harvard and was a patrician for generations. what does the black community want then? is it even worth our while to figure out all the permutations. the only thing i would recommend is that obama not turn this into another black referendum with endless gospel choirs behind him. we are electing a president of all the people. there are other candidates.
This article is a fine fresh example of the same ol' in Salon. A lot of hot air sound -- fluff, huff, ruffling attitude feathers -- for the inducement of fury or warm fuzzies, signifying nothing. No substance, Edward. The few factual nuggets you offer, tossed on the heap of various unsourced or uncritically accepted quotations, are as dried leaves swirling up before the whining leaf blower of your untested opinion, puerile psychoanalysis and selective naiveté. Like so many other writers in Salon, you've given us a nice cloud of dust.
Atchoo.
Following points;
1) No more pieces about Obama's race. Our country is still race separated, so his race is important. However, enough.
2) Obama is a bit of a personality cult. People love him before they know what he is about, policy-wise. That's interesting. And, I fear personality cults for good or for evil. So deconstructing his personality serves a common purpose. So keep on keeping on, Salon.
3) Uppity-hmm, unfortunate. But, there is no need to "lynch" the poor writer. It's sometimes like the white elefant. When someone tells you not to think of the white elephant, it is very hard not to. Let us not be so haste in labeling people racist based on one slip. This language witch hunt threatens all our liberties.
4)Obama strikes me not so much as the next Saviour but extremely ambitious person. This is not so bad. I see Hilary as extremely ambitious too. But, this worshipping at the table of Obama is turning me off to him. He, as his friends will tell you, is extremely calculating person who has been planning for this moment all his life.
