I was there in spirit....
as I am sure were many many others. Thank you to all who went!

Progressive family values
First protest I've been to since high school 20 years ago. Rode 16 hours round trip in a bus from Massachusetts. I was impressed at the number of middle-aged parents who came with their junior-high and high-school age children there were younger kids there too). I like the idea of progressives teaching their values to their children by participating in these kinds of events. I intend to bring my daughter to the next one of these I attend.

The surprise is ...
the "regular" media that I've seen are reporting this with a modicum of respect. In fact, that they are doing it at all is a shock.

March in DC
I am pleasantly surprised to see that Salon isn't snarking the march - I believe this is a first.
My husband attended (I couldn't, and was pissy all day knowing what I was missing) he reports that there were close to half a million people there, we've been to lots of marches and I trust his reportage. He said it was just wonderful. Spirit won't stop the war, but it helps to see each other, to know we're far from alone.

Did they multi-task protests in the 60's?
I'm way too young to have been a part of any civil rights protests in the MLK era. Can somebody tell me if they did the same bait/switch thing back then? Was it considered acceptable to invite tens of thousands of people to a march in honor of American Civil Rights, then have speakers opposing Chinese human rights violations and the U.S. policy in wherever we were abusing peopple at that time? I like to think that the issue of Civil Rights was important enough that the organizers chose to only have speakers on the actual topic at hand. If I'm right, then I wonder why opposing the war in Iraq isn't a big enough subject that they can actually limit themselves to speakers on that topic.

Freedom of Speech?
You should all be hung for "Treason". "Hanoi Jane" trying to demoralize the American people AGAIN!

Friends do not let friends ...
I was ambivalent about attending this rally, because I was afraid that from me, as an alien, it might come across as presumptuous. The way I view the issue is best expressed through what happened next: Someone asked me about this on the way to the rally, and what I thought about America. My reply: If you see that your friend is taking a turn down the wrong path, is it not your duty as a friend to speak up and to try to set him straight?
That is really all that there is to it: I am not one of these people who are driven by anti-American sentiment. I do this, because America is my friend, and because I worry that continuing on this path will be a recipe for disaster.
In response to bigrafx: I doubt that there were half a million people. However, I can say confidently that I have not seen that many people at a rally since my last peace rally in Germany in 1991, which drew 100,000 people, according to police estimates. I also was pleasantly impressed by the prevalent mood at the rally, and it gives me much hope.
Kudos to Salon for reporting on this, and peace to all.

I know, I know, no brain given
You and your little flag waving Freeper buddies may want to hang all of us for treason but that's kind of ironic isn't it? You're against freedom of speech. You're against the right of peaceful assembly. You are against the right to seek redress from our government.
You actually hate America, our Constitution and all of our freedoms.
I know you are hurting right now, you feel bad to be so wrong, so consistently wrong, throughout your miserable life. But we'll go on without you.
We WON and you LOST and we are in control of the Congress now. In 2008 we will flush your hero down the toilet of history and many of his associates will be going to federal prison.
So you and you're loser ilk can whine and cry and piss on yourselves like a bunch of incontinent old maids on a bumpy bus ride to Loserville.
Please write some more. I enjoy reading about your misery. There's going to be more pain for you. Much much more.
We WON, you LOST. Get over it, and get lost, loser!

This is the key problem
"The organizers, however, still seemed to have a little trouble focusing. The list of speakers they handed out to the press was more than 40 people long and included, in addition to four House Democrats and a number of actors -- Danny Glover, Susan Sarandon and, yes, Jane Fonda and Tim Robbins, a number of off-topic speakers, including two from the U.S. Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation, Kim Gandy, president of the National Organization for Women, Umuna Ghismay of the People's Hurricane Relief Fund and 12-year-old Moriah Arnold. Because of the long roster of speakers, the march started 45 minutes late."
As always the antiwar movement wants to almost cry out to be hijacked by every halfassed crackpot and/or borderline left wing hate group out there. IF you could manage to work against the WAR and only that you'd get further than trying to don your black t-shirts and protest more or less everything in general. OR, you could continue to be floundering losers. Your choice. And since you will flame these comments here and refuse to take harsh yet constructive criticism, I'm not hopeful for you at all.
