Allen's last gasps

George Allen's defeat in Virginia won't be official until the last votes are recounted -- but win or lose, he has been beaten to a shell of his good ol' boy self.

The letters thread is now closed.

Virginia Recount

If it doesn't go his way, will George Allen call in the Anti-Defamation League?

Salon Gets Some Credit

You Salon Editors went a little cuckoo about Geo. Allen after the Maccacca Incident. You followed the story daily for weeks. And I was tired of reading it over and over. BUT! Now that Allen has lost, and we see how close the vote was, I commend you. Your focus on Allen probably helped Webb win. If you had run one less story, maybe Allen would have squeaked by.

Allen represents everything I hate

about this country. He is entitled, arrogant, racist, and a good ole boy. In my opinion, he is nothing more than a corporate whore.

Hey, GMAC:

It's called a PRIMARY.

If you think Lieberman's principles are worth supporting, be my guest, give him a victory kiss. Watch out, though. Bush might have given him herpes.

Allen's defeat.

Allen's defeat - and yes, he has been defeated by Webb - has created a real problem for me. I told my friends that if the Dems took back both houses of Congress, I'd go back to church. Sheesh! I didn't really mean it. You know, like "Mission Accomplished." It sounded good at the time, but I didn't really expect to have to make good on it...

Allen Wrench

Hey, Macaca, maybe Virginnie will secede again and you can be a cuntfederate senator- it's what you were to start with, you bigoted butthead.

So Take that

re"If you think Lieberman's principles are worth supporting, be my guest, give him a victory kiss. Watch out, though. Bush might have given him herpes.

Lieberman's record is 90% solid Dem voting. That's a lot more than other Dems we have. It was an easy Senate seat, he clearly was going to win anyway, and it was preposterously stupid of the nutroots to do what they did. Rock bottom stupid. I stand by that, whatever Lieberman's "values", or your own for that matter, not withstanding.

The absentee ballot count is already in

Sure, he could still win after the precincts recount votes and the absentee ballots are counted

Mail-in absentee ballots in Virginia must be received at the county's Electoral Board office by 7 pm on election day, and they are counted and reported with the other votes cast. So the reported totals already include the absentee ballots; they are only missing the provisional ballot count.

It's not likely a recount is going to turn things around for Allen.

Lieberman? He's the anti-mensch

Lieberman's record is 90% solid Dem voting.

The problem is that the remaining 10% includes many key votes. It's no good to be with the party 90% of the time if you desert them on 90% of the crucial votes. And the 90% with the Dems include weasely things like voting against Alito's nomination (the meaningless vote, because the confirmation was destined to pass) after voting for cloture (where his vote really meant something, and helped to scuttle Democratic opposition to the nomination). He voted for Alito before he voted against him, in other words.

That's a lot more than other Dems we have.

More than who -- Democrats like Zell Miller? I don't have the figures, but my guess is that 90% is on the low end of party support over the last six years.

Why do you think the Republicans were so enthusiastic about supporting Lieberman in this election in the first place? They knew they could count on him to undermine Democratic opposition and give them a fig leaf of "bipartisanship."

It's too bad that Connecticut Democrats couldn't manage to unite behind Lamont. He isn't the wild-eyed radical that has been portrayed by Lieberman's defenders. I salute his primary victory: it was one of the early shots in this Democratic revolution, and it galvanized a lot of people, making no small contribution to last night's wave.

Congratulations Virginia

More than any other single victory nationwide, this is the most impressive for the people of the state. Is it accurate to give credit to salon and the left-leaning "blogosphere" for its revelations about Mr. Allen's racism and past conduct?

I am not exactly sure, even if I'd love to give that credit. Does it make a difference in the greater scheme of things? It is definitely testimony to the voters of Virginia for spotting a rotten apple and throwing him out of the barrel, regardless of how the information they needed was delivered to them. I congratulate them.

You can tell with someone as vain and and full of hot air as George Allen--the defeat makes a difference. He may one day become the greatest car salesman in Virginia, or possibly the president of one of its fine universities, but a member of the Senate of the United States? A contender for the Presidency of the country? I don't think so.

Forget about right, left and center--and consider common decency. The decent people of Virginia don't have to walk around knowing they are being represented by a goon.

Joementum Lieberthing

that ninety percent crap mean exactly nothing. He's been the most visible buttboy for bush since this hellish war was instigated. here's your analogy: a lifeguard is perfect the ninety percent of the time he sits on the pool deck working on his tan; but when someones' life needs saving, he's kissing the boss' ass and someone drowns. For Joementum, nearly 3000 are dead so far, with no end in sight. He can kiss my progressive veteran ass, the spineless weasel. to refresh your memories, he helped screw Al Gore with his pathetic wimpburger performance in the "debate" against Darth Cheney. He was a pussy then, he's a pussy now. He disgusts me almost as much as Macaca Allen.

You're Welcome, America

Thanks, Ben Sen. I've been miserable with the thought that even half of my neighbors would consider re-electing that bigoted bully. Webb was the most lackluster campaigner I've ever seen, but if the back-slapping idiocy doesn't come naturally to him, maybe that's because he really wants to govern, lead, and work--all those things Senators are supposed to do (also my theory for why Al Gore is such a bad campaigner but would have been such a great President). Allen was a waste of oxygen, both as a Senator and as a human being, and in his own mind he was prepping himself to be the next president. I'm so happy that Virginians finally derailed that straight-to-hell express.

And so, America, along with eight great Presidents (including the founder of the Democratic Party), Virginia finally gives you...a Democratic Senate! [Sorry about the stupid gay marriage amendment.]
