Allen's last gasps

George Allen's defeat in Virginia won't be official until the last votes are recounted -- but win or lose, he has been beaten to a shell of his good ol' boy self.

Salon Gets Some Credit

You Salon Editors went a little cuckoo about Geo. Allen after the Maccacca Incident. You followed the story daily for weeks. And I was tired of reading it over and over. BUT! Now that Allen has lost, and we see how close the vote was, I commend you. Your focus on Allen probably helped Webb win. If you had run one less story, maybe Allen would have squeaked by.

Disturbing

"Ellison, like Lambert, saw Allen's courtship as an opportunity. "If he loses, I'm losing my only White House connection," Ellison complained as he stood by the bar at Allen's "victory" party. "This has turned into a political nightmare." "

Much as having Allen in VA politics has been a nightmare, what's equally disturbing is how many churches and religious leaders get in the political mix. I have a feeling that a lot of churches should have their tax-exempt status taken away.
