I have to correct a perceived error in this piece. Dip and snuff, while both tobacco products (and both arguably disgusting), are mutually exclusive products. Dip is dipped - you put it in your mouth. Snuff is snuffed - you snort it up your nose.
If Allen was indeed "dip-snuffing," then he would have been snorting chewing tobacco up his nose. I'm generally willing to believe almost anything negative about Allen at this point, but I'm not prepared to accept that one...
Good, good riddance.

Mr Bass makes much of Sen. Allen’s use of smokeless tobacco.
“To dip” is the verb, and “snuff” is the noun.
Therefore, Mr Bass’ characterization of the Senator as “dip-snuffing” makes no sense, and he should have written, “snuff-dipping”.
CNN just said that, they can recount all they want, but in several other just as tight races where there was a recount in VA, the underdog only managed to acquire about 1500 votes...
So Governor Macaca does not get to become Senator Macaca, and, as George would probably put it himself, bein' a good ole boy and all that, he sure as hell ain't never gonna be President Macaca.

It always amused me that folks called Allen "Reaganesque."

Jefferson and Madison are gasping an Amen of relief. As a native Virginian and one whose British Isle ancestors first came to Virginia in the 1600s, I hope this fake Virginian will take his boots, snuff, noose and insufferable attitude back to some California dude ranch where he might complete his metamorphosis into a cowboy. Or maybe he can help out on the non-ranch ranch in Crawford.
. . . and I am grateful to see Mr. Allen's career smacked on the backside by the opening door of James Webb's political ascension. Mr. Allen could never hold a candle to a man of Webb’s character and integrity.
I was present at the inauguration of Webb's Richmond campaign headquarters last summer. It was quite revealing to see Jim Webb alongside the other politicos on the stage that day. He conveyed greater presence and stature than any of the Democratic officials assembled around him.
I have not voted in an election since 1980, and I am very glad that I made the effort to vote for Jim Webb yesterday.
Webb is poised to make political history. . .

Much as having Allen in VA politics has been a nightmare, what's equally disturbing is how many churches and religious leaders get in the political mix. I have a feeling that a lot of churches should have their tax-exempt status taken away.

Allen has not only lost a race, lost any hope of a nomination for president, but he's lost his whole damned political career. He's not coming back from this one, folks.

Anybody with the pretension to wear cowboy boots anywhere east of the Mississippi River is officially a poser. I saw George Allen riding a horse in a parade during the run-up to the election. From the back, all I could see was two horse's asses. From the front, I could only see one.
It's a shame that Allen's career has gone into the toilet so early. I was looking forward to him being the Republican nominee in 2008, because nothing could be easier than nationally beating the crap out of a guy who once cut off the head of a deer and stuffed it in an anonymous black man's mailbox. That racist frat-boy shit might fly in a cracker state like Virginia but not in America.
I'm sure the other comment about the differences between dip and snuff is correct (although the Skoal can just says "smokeless tobacco" on it). But regardless, I've never heard of "snuffing."
Snuff-dipping, maybe, but dip-snuffing is just bad grammar.
As the Repugs learned in 2004, you don't need the entire black base to win a middle -road type state - just 8-12% of it. They have this down and it might have worked in Va. and Maryland if they hadn't created such a federal mess.
Unfortunately for them, we've learned it too. We don't need ALL of the evangelical vote - we just need to cut into it. We don't need the ENTIRE married white maile vote, or the rural vote - we just need to cut into it.
And we did.

I'm just going to casually point out, as I did months ago, that if the looney nutroots hadn't created that disaster we didn't need to have in CT, the Dems would have the Senate now, whatever happens to Allen aside.
Although personally I don't see how Web can lose over 8000 votes in a recount, and if the Repigs try that , I don't think we should take it laying down.
I hate to tell you this but black churches have been extremely politically active since the civil rights movement. Still are, they usually work for Dems though, have been a miracle for us, and that's why the left should shut up with all their anti-religous banterings all the time.

I believe you may have your Warners confused. Mark Warner is a Democrat, former Governor of the great Commonwealth of Virginia and strong supporter of Senator-elect Webb. Senator John Warner is the senior Republican Senator for Virginia. While Senator Warner does respect Mr. Webb, party affiliation is a nasty pill, and Senator Warner did support that useless, wannabe cowboy piece of crap of a senator from whom we are finally free!
