At a veterans' watering hole, anger over Iraq runs deep and the message is clear: Republican incumbents can no longer count on the support of military voters.

  • I'll believe it when I see it

I have been reading stories about "true conservative/true Republicans" being "angry" over their current officeholders' direction for the last 8 years now. Somehow when they get into the voting booth this anger is either suppressed or dissapates, 'cause they touch the R screen choice every time.

I don't believe that there are any "true Republicans" that are distinct from the Radicals, and I don't believe any who are labelled as such will fail to vote for R candidates when the day comes.

    Cranky

  • RP Ringel is right

Liberals can't abandon their responsibility to an important institution like the military and expect its members to see things the way they do. They also need to acknowledge that the reason for the abandonment is a belief by many liberals that the United States doesn't really need a military because all military action is unnecessary or illegitimate unless we're talking about World War II. It's a belief that in its own way is just as crazy as those of the extreme right -- and drives people who might otherwise be on their side to vote Republican.

  • Premonition...

    SPOILER ALERT!!!

I hope the November election is just like the primary race on "The Wire"...In fact, it's no coincidence that the Mayor Royce and Paul Carcetti campaigns are an analogy to today's mid-term races across the U.S. I only hope the end result is the same as it was on the "The Wire" last Sunday night.

  • while at said watering hole

did anyone brag about the tourture of detainees?

  • GOP ABANDONED THE MILITARY OVER AND OVER AGAIN

The Gop has abandoned veterans over and over again, so turn about is only fair play.

My grandfather never got the bonus he was promised for his service in WWI. And my grandmother had to fight for his death benefits years after that.

And we should never forget that it was a Republican administration that used the Army to attack Vets who marched on Washington to claim that bonus.

The fact is that the so-called conservatives have never respected America's military - merely used it as the enforcement in their many, many criminal rackets conducted through "foreign policy".

  • making their own reality

I heard an interview today on Morning Edition. With a republican voter in one of the close house races. He said, (not verbatim, but close), that he would never vote for a democrat because Democrats "would weaken the military" and "would spend too much money."

I have to say, that level of denial-of-reality is impressive. It's BUSH who has weakened our army to the point where it can barely fight one insurgency on Iraq. It's the GOP that has spent an enormous amount of money and continued to increase the debt ceiling to give money to big Pharma, the M-I complex and oil companies.

The GOP has done a truly remarkable job of creating a wholly false version of the world, and then selling it to their constituents, who then vote for the party that screws them the hardest by far.

The GOP has become masterful at somehow getting right past any rational thought, straight to the brain-stem of its constituents. The GOP appeals to its constituents core beliefs in its propaganda, but acts directly AGAINST those core beliefs in practice...but the constituents, somehow, against all the direct evidence right in front of them, ignore that.

How in HELL do you fight that?

  • The Military, The Bushie Repubs And America

I feel badly for our troops because they are and will be given short schrift by the Repub party of war. Our troops were shorted during Vietnam and ever since and this is/will happen to the current vets. It's about time they woke up and voted in their own best interest and that of all those who lay their lives on the line for america. And if the Dems ever get into power they must also be held responsible for what the Repubs will not do.

Our troops do not seem to understand that the agenda of the Repub party is that taxpayer dollars should never go to benefit people including our vets, only to provide corporate welfare. The corporate conservstive Repub party never supports the people or troops of America. Our vets and all americans MUST look up the meaning of conservative republicanism as regards their agenda of support or actually resistance to using taxpayer dollars which come from the people and therefore MUST go back to the people and not the Repub conservative agenda of corporate welfare and subsidies.

If the Repubs are not going to see to it that our vets get a fair shake by providing them a decent and reasonable effort to make their lives whole again, as much as is possible, then the Repubs and the entire country have no right to send our troops into combat unless america is attacked. And 9/11 was not an attack on america. If it were then the Bushies should have quietly GOTTEN Bin Laden and attacked or at least put enormous pressure on the Saudi family from whence the attacks came and who are great friends of Bush and the Bush family oil business. We must never forget that the attackers were almost all Saudis'.

To me the real attackers of 9/11 were the Bush family. Additional attackers of 9/11 are the christian fundamentalist fascist theocrats, the corporatocracy(most especially the oil companies) and the nazi-fascist neocons. It's just amazing to me that one single family, the Bush family could almost singlehandedly bring about the destruction of american values of fairness and freedom and the rights of our people.

And now with the Torture legislation signed into law Geroge Bush and the Bush family can deem anyone a terrorist and disappear them forever, and their is no check on that power.

So what are they going to do and how will they use this law on our vets who protest the war and the american people who protest the war and against those americans who decide to vote for the Dems instead of the Repubs.

Our troops have to understand that the very things they are dying for have just been taken away by the Bushies and the Bush family. And now no one can stand against them. If the troops don't stand against them via their vote there is no longer any hope for the america our troops are dying for.

Our military has got to decide what they stand for and what they should do for america. One example, when Bush declares martial law are the troops going to kill americans. I love the military's great sense of patriotism for america but now under the Bush/Repub administration the issues go far deeper, and are not at all anymore so simplistic and straightforward as simple patriotism.

AND I wholeheartedly endorse the draft. All american citizens must bear EQUAL, EQUAL, EQUAL responsibility for the defense of america, not just the poor and some percentage of the middle class.

    ***********

The responsibility of 'we the people'.

And finally it is the responsibility for every single american to ensure that our government is putting our troops in harms way for only the best and most important of all reasons, a direct attack upon the USA. It is the profound responsibility of all americans to see to the safety and security of our troops above all else. It is the profound responsibility of ALL americans to not allow our troops to be sent to die for 'we the people' for any VAGUE or frivilous reasons no matter how important they SEEM. The importance MUST BE PROVED.

It is the profound responsibility of ALL american citizens to ensure that when we are willing to send our troops AND their families out to die for us that we must be EQUALLY WILLING to pay for their protection while in combat and that of their families and after they return from combat. If 'we the people' are not willing to pay that monetary price then we cannot ask our troops or their families to pay the ULTIMATE price.

NEVER can 'we the people' do any less...

IF we are a Pro-Life culture than that agenda MUST, MUST, MUST be extended to and include our troops, our vets and their wives and children.

My belief is that the pope and the Catholic Church and the white southern Baptist religion and the Repub party is not at all Pro-Life only PRO-BIRTH because their agenda or CLAIM of being pro-life ends once the child is born.

I say that and I am a catholic.
