Webb takes a turn on the hot seat

The George Allen campaign steers reporters to a source who says Jim Webb used the "N-word" and harassed blacks 40 years ago.

The letters thread is now closed.

Now if you want to talk

Swiftboating, this sounds like a textbook definition.

Of course....but then again Rose Mary Woods could have been playing with Webb's former firend's tape recorder.

Swift Boat Reincarnated

Olly North Republican remembers Webb's racism. What a surprise.

This is bull

Webb had black men with him in Vietnam, and has worked with numerous since. If this had actually happene, it would have come up way before now.

Webb has been prasied for his treatment of blacks, while Allen kept a noose in his office and did queasy stuff all along. This smells of politics.

A racist AND a misogynist?

Jesus Christ, the Democrats couldn't do any better than Webb? He is smarter than Allen, though...smarter than his debate performance would indicate. But, hell, this is ol' Virginny we're talking about...maybe to the San Franciscans and Manhattanites, saying "nigger" is a mortal sin...but to the Shenandoah voters...?

Macaca boy strikes back

How did we get started on this subject? Oh yes, George Allen used a racial slur on a college student photographer from the Webb camp. Then we heard about a verifiable story (2 witnesses, 1 living, 1 dead) of George stuffing a deer head in a black person's mailbox. Here the recently deceased witness had earlier told the mailbox story to his roommate and the roommate told us. Now five or so witnesses have stated that George Allen used the n-word too often in their presence. The confederate flag in George's lapel for his H.S. graduation picture surprised even George. The hangman's noose and con. flag in his law office are disturbing when tied to debasing speech and deer-head stuffing. But the action that really set me off was when as a public official Allen tied our Martin Luther King holiday to Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson. Now as a 35 year resident of Virginia I have to see our state celebrate King-Lee-Jackson Day every January. This

was an obvious attempt by Allen and his friends in the Virginia legislature to denigrate Martin Luther King. In my opinion George Allen's behavior over a long period of time marks him as a racist in a way that James Webb cannot approach and would not want to.

A lame, desperate reach by Team Macaca

I was wondering how long it would take for Macaca Allen's dispicable entourage to find one of their dittoheads who would be willing to step forward and lie in public.

But so lame? So transparent? Please!

"Uh, I thought I had it on tape but I guess I don't."

Regardless, I expect that Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh and the other flaming freepers will scream with righteous indignation and fill the airwaves with "Gotcha" tonight.

Such desperation. Such a long way to go for such a dubious payoff:

"Allen's a racist? So what, so's Webb."

OK, there are two racists running for the Senate in Virginia. Jeff Davis must be smiling up from hell.

Bad Journalism

The headline: "Webb takes a turn on the hot seat" clearly implies a sort of equivalence between the two stories. Far down in the text it is finally pointed out that Allen's comments have first-hand provenence while the accusation against Webb is a 23 year old memory of a conversation from someone who has a personal and political beef with Webb. The headline should have read something like: "Unverifiable Accusations of Racism against Webb" The lead should have been. "Unlike the concrete firsthand testimony purporting racism on the part of Gov. George Allen, accusations against challenger James Webb cannot be confirmed."

does the record match the rhetoric?

to wit:

george allen has used the n-word, had a noose in his office, and fetishized the confederate flag. but, more importantly, as a congressman he has systematically supported prejudicial legislation that rewards the rich and punishes the poor.

jim webb has used the n-word and mysogonist language. his policy-making is yet to be determined, but as secretary of the navy he helped to bring more women into that branch of the military. he claimed in the debate on "meet the press" that he joined the republican party in the 1970s because he felt that republicans were stronger on national defense, in spite of his "misgivings" about the republicans' position on "social issues."

the reality is that a large portion of the underclass in american consists of minorities, partly because of the prejudicial, classist legislation of the republican party. that said, whom would you trust more to help out the little guy?

re: Virginia's Democratic Senate candidate, Jim Webb, fended off allegations Thursday that he admitted 23 years ago to using a racial epithet and threatening black residents of Los Angeles as a teenager

Mission accomplished...

Felix Allen Is Getting Desperate

How pathetic and transparent can Macaca Allen get?

Does he really think ANYBODY is gonna buy this nonsense?

Friday, September 29, 2006 09:20 AM

At least...

Salon reported it.

Webb Already Admitted

That he used the N word in the past, if my memory is serving me correctly. The problem with Allen is that he refuses to admit something that probably is true, given other actions in his past (i.e., wearing a confederate pin, hanging a noose). He should just admit that when he was younger and dumber he said things that he would not say now. The denial is what is hurting him among some prospective voters. If Allen had admitted past indiscretions, the issue would be dead and he would be able to move the discussion to other issues.

As many letter writers have already said, it's not shocking that many Whites used racial perjoratives in the 60s (and before).

Just admit it and move on.

Once Again, Salon Proves it is TRULLY Fair and Balanced

I love that Salon is not afraid to dare to honestly cover stories that its management might not love.

Such is the case with today's story about Webb. I think that most of us who have a brain understand clearly that unless we get a Democratic majority in Congress, life in America and maybe even the world is threatened. The Republican Party is not just gutting the Tressury, it's thumbing its nose at the rest of the world and essentially creating battles that it and the nation as a whole can not win... the lives of our kids are at stake here.

And yet, the management and editorial staff at Salon clearly understand that it's not enough to SAY you're fair and balanced (which Fox news says and isn't). A free press HAS to report on all sides of any argument in order for the truth to be aparent to the reader.

Bravo, Salon
