  • The Politics of Fear

Watching the debates on this legislation, today, was one of the most demoralizing experiences of my life. There were moments of real heroic rhetoric from Senator Leahy, but the sniveling moral cowardice of Senators Graham and Warner was disgusting. We have arrived at a moment of humiliating shame in the history of this republic.

This is what comes of letting fear rule our nation. The people cower with every mention of terrorists, not realizing that the only terror they will probably ever experience is the very dread that infects there lives right now. The president and his cynical goons are squeezing the life, liberty and any hope of happiness out of this country. We are as certainly under the jackboot of tyranny as any country we have ever looked down on.

The Democrats are no better. They scatter like vermin at the slightest noise. They shame us with their obsequious lassitude. Weakness is what they fear, and as if on cue they exhibit it with every opportunity.

We are approaching an election of real importance. If we return the Republican police-state to power, people will suffer and die needlessly. The poor will increase. The infirm and the disenfranchised will be abandoned and exploited. The rich will hoard and hide their wealth abroad. We know this is true. It has been borne out in the past six years, leaving us without doubt of the seriousness of our situation.

Yet, the Democrats give us little reason for hope. They are like so many Uriah Heaps -- fish-pawed grovelers, standing for nothing but their own offices. Torture, show trials, incarceration without access to the courts. Where will it end? What will be too much? Anything? This is the tyranny of the spineless.

If these people will not stand up, now, when every nerve, tendon, and muscle should be rigid with resolve, then we have nothing to hope for in the election. Even if the Democrats take control of the congress, they will find the next thing to fear, the next election to warily anticipate, the next shame to embrace.

We think that we are at the very end of a tunnel, but it looks more and more like we are really just paralyzed with fear, and the train is coming hard and fast.

  • How can I explain this back home?

Remember the last midterm election, when the vote to invest the power to start the Iraq war was wrung out of spineless Dems who were asking the same question? How about explaining that to the folks back home? "See, they did it then at the last midterms and look where it got us? Stuck in Iraq, draining the country of blood and treasure. Every time they want to win an election they set up Congress to take advantage of the fear of the people and at the same time to give the president more power than he's shown himself capable of handling—more than even a competent president should have. Now he expects us to vote to throw out habeus corpus, which has been the foundation of legal justice since the Magna Carta in 1215! Well, I'm sorry, but I believe voters are smart enough to see this sucker punch a mile away. I voted to maintain the rule of law instead of making Bush more of a dictator than he already is."

Is that too complicated for voters to understand? Do you think they'll think the Magna Carta is some kind of NASCAR reference? I know that a lot of voters are dumb as posts, but damn, people, what kind of suckers are the Dems that they let themselves get set up with these Rovian maneuvers before every election? There comes a time when you just have to hope that slightly over half the voters are capable of a little thought.

Hmm. Clearly that's a dicey proposition, but what's the alternative? The Dems should filibuster the hell out of this and every one should stand up and speechify like crazy about all the damage Bush & Co. have inflicted upon us.

    Think it'll happen. No.

Think half the Americans are too stupid to figure this out. Probably.

Think it'll matter with Diebold counting the votes? Probably not.

Methinks we're screwed. The death of democracy is at our doorstep.

  • Dear Christians. Please Help Us!

This is going out to all the right wing Christians who are George W. Bush supporters.

Okay. You won. You got your guy into power. You have the congress, you have the Supreme Court. You have your own network of TV and radio stations. Your servants work to pass legislation against gays getting married. You are on the path to protecting all innocent life from the second the sperm unites with the egg as you have determined that is when life begins. You got the president to get out of bed to fly to Washington for Terri Schiavo even when he wouldn't do the same for the flood victims in New Orleans. I have no doubt you will keep going until the world is remade in your image or we reach the End Times. Only then will you rest. So...given all the power you have, I have a request:

"Could you please help us stop your government from passing laws that make it OKAY to torture other humans? Could you please come out AGAINST torture? Against the bill that is winding its way through congress now?

Could you please get as worked up over this as you did about Janet Jackson's breast? Can you please make some of the same 100's of thousands of phone calls and letters to your servants as you did when you were hoping that Teri Schiavo was tracking a balloon with her eyes after years in a coma? Okay, those are nasty shots, please forgive me. In fact, I'm willing to grovel. It's more important for me to look out for the least of my brothers who might be in an eternal state of imprisonment with no hope of a trial than to get in my snarky comments.

It's hard for me not to be angry at you because it seems to me your priorities are wrong. I often don't agree with you since you target my friends and their choices. But I'm going to get down on my knees and beg you now. Please, please, PLEASE pick up this cross of suffering that our elected officials want to lay on the people they determine are enemies.

I know that you are scared of terrorists. That's normal given the times we live in where fear is sown in every newscast. I know that you have been told that if someone is a detainee they are guilty and would slit your throat if they could. But here's the thing. Sometimes we get it wrong. People make mistakes. You know all those people in Gitmo? Hundreds were let go. Why? THEY WERE NOT THE TERRORISTS WE WERE LOOKING FOR. Some were mistakes. If there isn't a chance to recover from mistakes with something like habeas corpus we are all diminished as children of God. We can give wrongly imprisoned people a chance to prove their innocence.

And wouldn't you want that for yourself, for your brother? And who is your brother? Who did Jesus say was your brother?

I think that if you look at the authentic passages in the New Testament, some of those stories or parables that Jesus said will back up my request.

Dear Christians. Please help us! And I'm not going to ask the question, "What would Jesus Do?" you know the answer. Whatsoever you do to least of my brothers that you do unto me.
